  • Again, the Wards were way ahead of their time with this one. Rock & Roll owes everything to this recording!!!

  • I am absolutely stunned to hear this recording...again, in this sparkling ,clear version. I have only heard it on the original Savoy 78, where it is titled as "Part 1" (:01-2:47) and "Part 2" (2:48-5:20). While Herman Lubinsky had the 78 version mastered with more bass and drums, hotter than the vocals---typical of the way Lubinsky's blues and R & B 78s were mastered during the same time, this version hear lifts the voices out in the open and not muddled together. Is the source for this from CD?

  • This is wonderful! I absolutely knew the distinctive voice of Thelma Jackson -- always articulately precise -- adding to her natural beauty.

  • PurpleSnowman29, direfranchement, Rowoches, and minjmrodgers are 3 of the most knowledge golden age posters on youtube and I adminre you guys knowledge and more then that, your willingness to share these great gems of yesterday. I learn something new about our gospel veterans everytime i see you guys post up. keep up the great work educating us and sharing these gems to keep our heritage, history and hope alive. luv u guys for real.

  • PERFECT recording: talk about building the momentum of a song as it goes along.

  • I love the contrast of these three voices. Frances Steadman's voice was very gentle, and then Thelma Jackson comes in with her forceful, fiery contralto...is she the one that hits that high note at 1:10? Later Marion comes in with her growling and swooping range-unlimited soprano/mezzo. I think this may be my favorite recording by the group, although I have by far not heard all of them.

  • Gosh I love Francis Steadmans voice!

  • and Is1108, before you start running and opening your mouth on my videos, you need to read the information beside them or either you can post your own videos. The spirit that you presented to this video, was very much unwelcomed and unneeded.

  • Lord please have mercy on us. Is1108, you are so late on this one. I have already changed the information, but I never changed the video recording. Raystar8, DaSourcepr06 and rowoches we all have already discussed this one and put it too rest. I had no more argument when I went back and look at my information. I do have the power to remove and block all these comments, but I didn't do it because I didn't feel like it. And btw, we all left this one alone 2 weeks ago.

  • I agree, in '47, Frances was still with the Mary Johnson Davis singers. Every true Ward Singers fan knows this is the incomparable Thelma Jackson who indeed started with the Specials along with Lil Davis and Frances accompanied by Raymond Rasberry. How do I know? Not because I read it somewhere. I accompanied the Stars of Faith on their final 3 European tours and know Frances and Thelma's neice Darlene who also sang with the Stars. Purple thanks but...you're wrong on this one.

  • Well let me add one more comment. It doesn't matter who is right or wrong, or has the most knowledge of the Ward Singers. They are all blessed singers and I thank the Lord for giving them to us in time he did. May God continue to bless everyone who hears this music.

  • God Bless You too!

  • I know what I know, but in the spirit of christian love, I'm not going to try to convince anyone on this one and nothing else. I love all my music and I'm going to keep posting it for the world to hear. Let's just leave it like that.

  • And to Raystar8, I'm so glad that you have the book with the name besides the song. But everything you read in books isn't true. I know that is Mother Ward because I have the records, and working in the Studio I have access to almost everything. Thelma Jackson never sang with the Original Ward Singers. This song was recorded in 1947. I would appreciate it in later refrences if you have information, just keep it to yourself. Because from what I see, this starts confusion. God bless you!!

  • This coldnt be 1947, Frances Steadmen wasnt with the Wards yet..and she was with the Ward Specials way into the mid 50s..

  • This is NOT Mother Gertrude Ward. It is INDEED Thelma Jackson. Thelma sang with the Clara Ward Specials in the early 40's, and she eventually did join the Famous Ward Singers (pre-1958), though the more popular set of girls was Clara Ward, Marion Williams, Kitty Parham, Frances Steadman, & Willa Ward.

I also have the sheet music book, in which this song is included, and Frances, Thelma, and Marion are listed as the soloist.

  • Henrietta Waddy was also a part of the more popular group.

Thelma Jackson is also the one who led "Further On Up The Road" with the Famous Ward Singers. With the Clara Ward Specials, she led a few songs including "He'll Never Let Go Of My Hand" and "Higher Ground." If you listen to the voice, you'll see it's the same one singing the second lead in "I Know It Was The Lord."

  • Purple Snowman29, Hey brother, let me 1st say thanks for sharing your songs with us..secondly i didnt mean it to seem i was attacking what you believe.I understand how you feel right now...let me share this with you.For a great while i thought henrietta waddy to be mother Ward and then too.. thought Willa to be Kitty on recordings. Was quite a shocker to me to learn the truth So as Shirley Caesar sings in one of her songs ,CHEER UP MY BROTHER!It's going to be allright!!

  • This is Raystar8, I'm so sorry to have to be the one to burst bubble's but in actuality after frances starts the song that the singer Thelma Jackson that takes the lead then Marion takes over from there. How do i know? I have a book with the singer's names besides the song's that were recorded.

  • Yeah. Darneloh. Madame Gertrude Ward, as she was sometimes called, was a true pioneer. Albertina Walker was alot like her. Mother Ward shepherd and brought singers out. Yeah Ruth Davis and her sisters, were like daugthers to Mother Ward. 2 great female groups under Mother Ward.

  • Sometimes you bearly tell her voice from Henrietta Waddy. They sound almost identical. But there is one difference, Mother Ward was born a Soprano, and that gene she passed on to her daughter Willa. lol. I have several recordings of Mother Ward in the early days. lol.

  • Yes you are right I forgot about Waddy lol.

I heard a later recording of Gert when she was testifying about how she got the revelation to become a singing Evangelist. She told the Pastor's name and the church where she held her fist concert. The song she first song on that program was "He never left me alone". Yes Clara and big sister Willa didn't steal it lol. Truly Gert was a pioneer. We wouldn't have known about Ruth Davis and Davis siters if it wasn't for her.

  • Frances had such clear voice and great range in her tone. That was Gertrude because that's the best I've heard her. I thought she lost her vice after she had a goiter removed from her throat? Well if that's her sing on Madme.Ward!

  • Thanks Kenji. Let me tell you, not only could Mother Ward Sing, but she was a true Soprano. You will find that on later recordings, she stayed alot in the background and let Clara and the girls do most of the leading. I love Mother Ward. Thanks for listening.

  • Madam Gertrude could sho sing. I heard her before but I didn't know it was her. I would like to her more of her. Great post.
