Theya ren't going to "shut down the internet". c'mon. It's piracy. Hey Joe - youtube pays you for your videos right? If they don't you're not as smart as I thought. YOu think I should be able to post them, get 1M views and get paid for your hard work? No you don't. SOPA is NOT at all broad in scope. If you read it and most of you didn't you would notice that there must be a lot of legal work before anyone or anything gets shut down. So lets all have a beer, relax and get educated.
Wow joe it's a scary thought. I use royalty free music, but to think what's in the backgrounds and labeling can be overlooked pretty easy. I hope this does not pass so we can enjoy the freedom of doing the videos we love to do and continue to share with one another in this great community. Cheers

I don't respond to this kind of thing as a rule, but this is a step outside the bounds of reason. it is like closing the interstate because the local police found a drunk driver and think there may be another out there! STOP THE MADDNESS!!!
Great video, Joe. It is amazing how uneducated some of the responses are here. As a technical person, these bills will do nothing to curb piracy. All they can do is block DNS. If you don't what that is, you shouldn't be spouting your opinion on these two bills because you would know that getting around blocked DNS entries is like computers 101. These bills are extremely bad answers to real problems. These are potentially damaging for the Technology industry and a minor annoyance to pirates
I could really careless about any of this to be frank and honest. What was the world like prior to the internet? What was the world like prior to cellphones? Prior to computers? A lot easier than it is now...Technology hasn't made anything easier...It has made our life harder and more difficult. So regardless of SOPA/PIPA life is going to go on..It isn't like the 3rd Reich is coming down and wanting to burn books.
@mrsarcastic76 Really? How can you say it was easier. Explain. Besides, would you have said 30 years ago that the world would be easier without cars, electricity, radio, and machines? Hey, I'm not a fan of big corporations controlling everything, but videos like this can stop them from being greedy bastards and teach people to WAKE UP! :)
Really? you think 30 year's ago there wasn't cars? electricity? radio? machines? Cars have been around since the early 1900's same as radio. Electricity has been around since turn of the century. and well machines have been around since the industrial revolution.. all of those were far longer than 30 years ago.
Excellent vid Joe!! The bills are flawed in so many ways, e.g. it's obvious that the authors do not understand how the internet works. For instance, they want to stop foreign pirate sites from being accessed in the USA, but the bans would be based on the sites' URLs, meaning that the very sites they want to ban could be okay and legit USA sites could be banned. I agree with protecting IP but not by obtuse & broad-brushed legislation.
I say strike them down & make the original intent not able to shut down my constitutional right to free speach. Tjhe signers of the constitution must be screeming in heaven right now!
The problem is gray area. If it's gray, someone will try to do it. If that someone has high priced lawyers, you can count on becoming a precedence unless taken to the supreme court. This stuff just has bad written all over it. I find these bills to be filled with gray area. Intent is not good enough anymore, you must explicitly say it in the law or forget it.
@100lemonjuice Well if your using copyrighted material without proper consent then your stealing and you deserve it.. It's not like Apple is going to shut down best buy's page because the apple logo appears on it. Get proper consent to use the image or material and your good to go.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Read the actual proposed bills and then see how much of it is actually censorship. Neither of them have anything to do with censorship. SOPA = Stop Online Piracy Act..I think that pretty much explains itself, Piracy has been against the law for the last 10 years but now ppl bitch lol, ever since napster. PIPA = Protect Intellectual Property Act... this makes it a crime for someone else to steal your idea's and make billions off of it. People need to stop listening to what others say and read.
@kjfollis Well, well, said kjfollis. I'm in total 100% agreement with you. I don't understand why people feel like they can use someone elses content without getting the permission of the other party in the first place. Just because Youtubers are daily using other videos from fellow youtubers everyday, does not mean you can use this same tactic while pilfering video content from the media, ie. commercials, videos, movies, etc. That's called....wait for it....."infringement voilations", lol
@EagleEyeGolfer Who said anything about using other people's content without authorization? I am completely against the robbery of intellectual property--in no way do I support piracy. The problem is the broad scope in which both SOPA and PIPA would allow corporations the unchecked ability to shut down anything they see as a threat to their bottom line.
That's exactly how I feel about SOPA and PIPA. The reason why everyone is in such a uproar about the bill is that it's just so broad and can be manipulated to easy (at least, that's what they think will happen). I just read an article about the bill and the writer said that it was too open for interpretation and could cause more harm than good.
The bills would have the government allow corporations to censor anything that affects their profit throw copyright infringement They can jack with YouTubes standards No more Cover songs Parodies Gameplay commentary No short media clips
@terpsichoreankid That's just it ( protecting the corporations ) is what is needed. That's why we have rules and regulations. I know people like to go against the grain or somehow believe "big brother" is looking at us theory. Some of us are "free spirits" and don't want to be told what to do. Having a Youtube is a privilege, not a right. Youtube gives us the "freedom" to express ourselves or do whatever. If one follows the guidlines correctly then censorship will never be a problem.
@EagleEyeGolfer Also, you and I can follow the guidelines, but if others don't, youtube may be history. Is that what you want? The corporations can protect themselves. They've got all the money to do so. What about our rights. What about US??? (Protect the corporations.. pfff. They already run everything, what else do you want to give them?)
@kjfollis I have, and a huge part of it is the government giving corporations the unchecked ability to shut down ANYTHING that affects their profits (aka censorship) and the stifling of the free flow of information. That's what I have the problem with.
@terpsichoreankid The problem is you only have your parents and grandparents to thank for that.. when they voted to give corporations rights like individuals. This is just the next progression of that. Now that they are considered individuals they too deserve rights to protect that which is theirs, just the same as you or I have the right to protect that which is ours.
The bills would have the government allow corporations to censor anything that affects their profit throw copyright infringement They can jack with YouTubes standards No more Cover songs Parodies Gameplay commentary No short media clips
@kjfollis It's already a crime to steal somebody's work, without these bills. People want the internet itself to be Left Alone. Any time the government meddles in something it turns out to be a disaster. These bills are stepping stones towards full censorship by the Zionists, and you know it.
@kjfollis Mate - its a law for corporations. 12-15 big media corporations will benefit off this. Thank god this law wasn't around when someone invented a table or called the sky blue. All this will do is push this underground and make criminals of normal people.
They are even trying to copyright individuals DNA.
No they are not. This isn't about "I created this idea first" so therefore nobody else can have it. People are tired of busting their asses only to have their products stolen and sold or used without their consent. Stealing is stealing no matter how you cut it. Robin Hood might have had good intentions but he's still a thief.. Like the addage goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions
@kjfollis Fine. When They shut down YouTube because there's copyrighted material here, I hope you're dancing in the streets dude. Piracy is not right, but this is a total EXCUSE by the media corps to control the internet and make you watch their lame TV shows again. Please wake up to the bigger picture. :)
Places like youtube won't be shut down if they are doing everything they can to prevent pirated material. They already do that as it is. Also for the programming they have online. It's like Hulu. If they have permission from the person or company ahead of time then that's not pirating. Have you noticed most of the shows that are on here are posted by the network themselves.
An ACT is not an Enacted Public Law; STOP allowing your elected Representative to use Words Of Art to deceive you. Everything you think is a LAW is only applicable to Trade & Commerce, those who are imports or contracted, including federal employees.
I'd say "too funny" but its not!!! I understand that artists have a right to royalties, but I also think thats what part of ad fees should go to! If u want to upload a video with such & such artists playing in the background fine, make the viewers watch 1 or2mins of ads to cover royalties & operation cost! I don't see how they can ban stuff, Thats nuts. My way they'd have more money in their pocket & i'd still be fine with it!
@WannaBeDj100 If pirating was to completely go away, that doesn't mean record labels would increase royalties, this isn't for the benefit of the artist, only for the companies who OWN them.
Excellent to the censored point vid! I'm glad i didn't get to see it, or it might have made me mad...big brother needs to keep us safe you know..might as well buy some of Chinas censorship software since they seem to be pros at it.
Joe, I'm really glad we share more than one thing in common. The love of a good homebrew and the free and open access to information. SOPA and PIPA are two of the most dangerous pieces of legislation to come to congress in a long time. While I applaud any online entity for bringing more attention to these issues, the only real solution is to call your reps and tell them via phone or postal mail that you oppose SOPA and PIPA. The majority of reps do not pay attention to email & online petitions.
