some guitarists dont belong on a stage or in front of a mic. Eric is the best example. he brings nothing to the music. and his voice? dude, stay home and make dvd's. you aint got no presence.
@TheInboil Please, shut the fuck up. I'm tired of people insulting musicians. If you don't like it, get the fuck off of this video. don't post your insults here.
@TheInboil hi. welcome to the internet. first time here I see. let me explain how it works, we watch, we opine, we retort. and then little fart stains like you show up with their hurt feelings and go wah wah wah, dont talk bad about my favorite guitarist, all the while your mother washing the cum stains out of your bedsheets.
@TheInboil WHATS YOUR NAME AGAIN?????? OH YES, Thats right,, your a NOBODY!!! LMFAO... You are some jerk off siting in his tiny trailer humping his sister because thats how your "ROLL" in your hood... You wouldn't know good music if it walked up to you and slid its ROCK HARD COCK in your Queer Mouth!!!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!! I SAID GOOD DAY SIR!!
I always find the debate regarding artistic merit sadly funny. The idea that one virtuoso is somehow better than another virtuoso is to disregard orchids in favor of roses.
EJ's voice is as smooth and beautiful as his playing. Does everything always have to be aggressive? Isn't there enough of that in the world? Is that one emotion all that music should have to offer?
If you want aggression, sod off and listen to Slipknot!
Eric Johnson is a great guitarist, but maybe he should shut up and just play the guitar ;-). Eric Johnson really has the ability to convey the music while remaining a straightforward and honest, likeable person!
Spot on Jack Bruce? Your kidding right. Jack Bruce has a soulful aggressive jazz/blues voice. Eric Johnson is one of my favorite guitar players but the singing is night and day versus Bruce. I don't think you can sound any more bland or white than Eric sounds as a singer. The music is always great, but it's the voice that makes or breaks a song. Just look at the other Eric, Eric Clapton. Now he has a great voice and has played great guitar forever. Where is the song modern shredders?
@jadart2000 You know there will always be a compromise between the singing and the guitarplaying. In an interview EJ is supposed to have said that he is aware his singing as well as guitar playing suffers during performances and he finds it hard to prioritise. EC knows just a fraction of what EJ does and often has a second guitarist to take care of the tricky stuff, so they do not quite compare that way.
Great guitar player, but he needs to find a lead singer as he can't sing. He could find just about anybody with a better voice. Sorry Eric love your playing but find a singer for god sake.
His 335 sounds funky to me for some reason...almost sounds like the pups are under wound a bit...or maybe he just chose them to not be as hot. Both my 335s cut harder and sound woodier. Not my guitar not my problem. lol
@supermanjamil1992 Erics signature Dimarzio humbuckers are wound to sound like a Gretch pickup. Lower output. It would let the wood come through more. Also he's got the Marshall running pretty hot and probably rolling the tone knob off a bit for that "woman" tone of claptons.
@filerocktheworld It's an interesting tone...this was my first Eric Johnson video and that threw me off like a lot. lol Thank you sir, I'm former violinist!!! :-)
This video is from LOVE-IN: A Musical Celebration. It's a great show that features classic 60's styles. The DVD is available on Amazon or the Love-In website. A shortened version of the concert is playing on various PBS stations this summer. Highly recommended.
Lindsey- if ya don't want to listen to a cover, ya gotta go to the original artist. Replicating Eric Clapton is difficult at best, Johnson certainly plays true to the original, but blends in his own unique style. If he could do EC note for note perfectly like the original artist, it would just be a copy cat performance and pretty boring.
Got to say, I love the way Eric Johnson plays but I have spent the past 45 minutes watching him play these classic rock tunes (hendrix, cream) and he does not do this stuff all that well. Not nearly as good as the original artists. He is great at his own thing, Why not stick with it?
@lindseyblair - If he did it like the original artists... it would be boring. I can just go listen to the CD if I want to listen to the original recording. If you go to see an Eric Johnson show, and you see him play a cover, you wanna see Eric playing it, not someone else!
i dont get it, eric is light years ahead of clapton on a tech standpoint, i think everyone expects him to shred all the time but he isnt a shredder he is way past that more technical than most wanna bees
Eric Johnson's version of this song is fantastic he is one of the only guitar players out there that has flawless technique whilst at the same time capturing the 60's vibe!
he's a better technician than ec was in cream (& now, especially), but that's it. on most other levels, they're equals, though clapton had a MUCH better band & material. ej's a great player, & i don't want anyone to misconstrue my criticism of this 1 performance as a general indictment. as a player, it's hard for me to NOT listen & like him. but i'm not a big fan of his content or concept; i find his own music mediocre. but i LOVE his playing. it def inspires me to strive for better technique!
the other thing i think i DOES need to be pointed out is that in this day of EVERYTHING being caught for posterity means the every fart & wart gets posted for the world to see, something that didn't really exist years ago. that means you can't really take anyone to task totally for something they had no intention of being made public. god knows i wouldn't. so any kind of general indictment for 1 escaped performance is a bit unfair. that being said, my critique IS genuine & my motivation is pure.
this is kinda painful to listen to. he's either playing stock ej licks, or his version of what he thinks ec sounded/played like in the 60's. he's really missing the hypnotic snakiness of ec's playing on, say, cream's version on goodbye cream. there's winding, almost tipsy (as in drunk) playfulness in ec's performance on that & the studio version. & ec's tone on BOTH destroy ej's here. funny thing is, ej IS a better player, but he's showing his expressive limitations, here, at least on this toon.
I'm a die hard EJ fan and I agree EJ is by far a better guitarist than EC, but I've noticed a tendency of EJ's that he's sort of has lost the advant garde edge he used to have. I'm not saying he's losing it, but the energy and curiousity of yesteryear isn't there anymore. "Expressionistic shyness" could be the expression for it. He's turned into something of a bleak copy of himself from the Tones and A Via Musicom days. Let's have the goode olde EJ back!
This must be some sort of "Celebrate the Music of the Sixties" show. Or, maybe it's that "Love In" thing he was a part of. Either way it is so awesome. I always love hearing EJ cover his favourites. It's also cool to see him play a DOT 335.

music and art is all about opinion-if you like eric johnson or eric clapton is taste-
if you want to say johnson is faster than clapton at times, maybe thats true, but so what....
either you enjoy a song,or you don't,if you sit there and compare and pick it apart, you miss the point-

Well actually its a Jack Bruce tune(co-lyricist Pete Brown).
I would recommend taking a listen to
the live version of Jack Bruce and
Rory Gallagher: v=DXk--eL5-kQ
Rory did not know the tune and
Bruce sings the riff to Rory just
seconds before they hit the stage
-- great performance.
