Why ar people getying upset that he doesn't like a flag. It doesn't mean he's got something against bears. I don't really think each sub group needs their own flag. . And I'm not big on going to pride events either.
you are obviously very young and very inexperienced....do your research on pride/bears/and different niches of the gay community. you might understand and respect pride (even if its not brightly colored) a little bit more.
I am 34. Graduated from high school in 1995. I took my boyfriend to my high school prom without issue. I've been out since I was 13. I have a feeling that my generation was one of the first to come along where being gay (in an urban setting) wasn't that big of a deal. I don't have the desire to attend pride events. It's not that I don't approve; it's that I don't see the need. I am who I am and I'm proud every day. But I guess for older homos, there is a need to commemorate their struggle.
I actually did a video about Pride. I think there should be some rules in place. Maybe no blowjobs or exposing yourself?!? We ask for respect, but parade around in skimpy clothes or do disrespectful things at Pride. Some serious idiocracy there.
im a fat hairy gay guy. and i liek the bear flag and the rainboy flag. but to those who think why is there another one. because probably most bears throughout there life wether it be in school or work or clubs have experienced the dumbfounded twink. in school when i came out i got a "Youve got to be f*****g kidding me (insert hand flap thing)" . i think most bears have something like that atleast once. i dont liek the gay stereotype because it supposed to make me look like a ..... girl?
yeah i dont get why the big hairy guys are their own thing either. anywayyyy do you mean pride in ferndale? that was so fun! i'm totally going again haha. if you saw a guy and a girl with rainbow flag capes, that was me and my friend haha XD
I think I can sort of explain, being one of the big hairy guys, myself. Yes, we appreciate the rainbow flag. It's not as if we decided that being gay was not who we are. We are, indeed, still gay. It was the feeling of being shunned by the greater gay community at large that the Bear community formed. This is why we have our own flag. The flag represents the various colors of hair on the human body. You don't have to like it. We're here too, we're queer too, get over it.
Actually, we're I live we are having our first Pride event ever here! I'm so excited and hope all the planning and work makes for a good event. It has taken months to do!! Of course we in July so as not to conflict with the two major cities Pride events in our State, thankfully the only other Pride event we had to plan around in our State isn't until September and its in a city smaller than ours and they've been doing it for years!
And besides, in these days of marriage equality fights all around the nation, fragmenting the Bear community out of the Gay community at large is counterproductive. If we are going to win these fights for marriage equality and other Gay-positive rights, we need to stick together and wave all of our flags.
wow......you got beat up pretty good in the comments on your lack of interest in pride ..... relax folks....not all gays love going to every gay event....and i don't see anything wrong with that
You know when your only comment is that you don't like the flags, isn't that turning yourself into the fashion police? And that is a big gay sterotype we need to get away from. The point of those flags is not how pretty they are, but what they symbolize.
How nice for you that you're young enough to not have to care about pride or to think it is important to commemorate and celebrate our history and community.
For our community, this our holiday and time to celebrate. Kind of sad you don't want to celebrate with everyone else.
I kinda felt this way about this video too.. along with some of the other comments. But I mean it's not like he's denying the point of the day... he just didn't have that great of a time.
But I think he could have been a bit more sensitive because I, for one, really do love bears... pretty much on principle.
And I, on the other hand, am totally hyped for SF Pride. woot.
Saying the gay bear flag is ugly is like saying diversity is ugly! Makes me sad that someone so "liberal" as you can't see something as simple as that. In my opinion both the gay flag, and the bear flag are beautiful, unlike your judgement.
Saying that someone can't have an opinion is pretty judgemental yourself. He's not saying he doesn't like the cause, it's just not aesthetically pleasing to him O_o;; And I don't disagree, I'm not a fan of varying shades of brown. I'd rather see bright colors. Does my color preferance make me a bad person?
And I totally relate about not needing to go to pride. I've been, it was fun, but not something I feel the NEED to go to every year. It makes me feel like a walking stereotype.
No i just disagree with his opinion. Never said he couldn't have one. The shades are a symbol of the different races. Not everyone can fit into "pretty" box.
And because you showed us your bracelet, it made me want to start making them again, so I asked my Mom to send me embroidery thread, and now I'm going to spend the next few months filling my wrists and ankles, and the wrists and ankles of others with many many bracelets/anklets. :)
I had no idea what you were talking about with the gay bear thing, so I went to Wikipedia and spent a half hour reading about it. It's actually quite interesting. Thanks for showing me something I didn't know, Tyler. :)
I agree with what he said about the bear pride flag...why would an already small minority such as gay people then dissect themselves FURTHER from one another by having a separate bear pride flag??? I don't attend pride events but according to people who do, it's supposed to be about supporting each other as a unified group of gay people...not then creating more small cliques of people within that group.
Because within the queer community, people often don't feel represented by the mainstream queer community, so it's really easy for you to say what it's suppose to be about, and that's all great in theory, but in actual practice not so much.
Pride is about being able to be allowed the freedom to be who you want to be, to be able to go out and say, I'm here, I'm queer, and I'm not going away. It's a time to bring all the smaller factions of the larger community as a whole and bring them..
together. Like a more effective and fun United Nations.
Now onto the actual video. Dude, I'm sorry, i usually like your videos the best but this one really irritated me, so much that I thought I would comment which I never do.
You didn't even talk about these issues, it was like, "OMG I don't like pride or rainbowflags, but LOL look at this other flag, it's more deserving to be made fun of."
I think you need to spend a little time exploring your internalized homophobia. I can respect..
So forming cliques within the gay community with separate flags is what pride is all about? Sounds fucking dumb. It's like the divide between gay men and lesbians...they should be joining together for the cause, not dividing themselves. You seem like one of those gay activists, but you have to understand to some of us, it's just who we have sex with...not our way of life. Don't force your beliefs on others, otherwise you are just as bad as people who want us to be straight...
No, allowing people to celebrate their differences and be proud of that is what Pride is suppose to be about. I find if funny that you say that you just think it's who you have sex with, yet you're taking interest in 'gay' related things that create a sense of community, much like 5awesomegays does do.
I am not forcing my beliefs on anyone, I'm stating my opinion. You're welcome to take it anyway you want. However, it really irritates me when someone says they don't like pride, and then ...
then they don't actually explain themselves. Just expecting us to accept that at face value. Which is actually what Tyler did here, which in my experience in watching his videos is rare for him.
I personally don't like pride either, because it's not about the community anymore, but rather about the corporate sponsorship. However, the smaller communities that have broken off to do their own thing? it's in those places you actually get a sense of community. To just go off on the bears...
without really knowing anything about how it works is just sort of ignorant. It's not a clique, it's a community, that broke away from the mainstream because they didn't feel represented. This could be for many reasons, I'd suggest you do some reading.
One more thing, if you feel being gay is just about who you sleep with, you're so naive, who you sleep with, love, and date effects every part of your life. How you relate to people, who you related to, and even the humour you appreciate.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The 5awesomegays were stumbled upon and I found their videos funny...like the gay friends I do not have, plus they are damn cute. I didnt search GAY things on YouTube, because I don't seek out everyting GAY. Being gay doesn't mean it is who I identify my sense of self as, it is a PART of me. My friends are straight, I love gay satire, I don't believe in "gay" culture or pride...I say fag queer and cocksucker in derogatory ways. Just cuz I like boys doesn't mean I have to be like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow.. 5-not-so-awesomegays.. are you f'ing kidding me. You all complained about pride more than anything else. I don't think any of you have much pride (maybe only Michael). Talk about a disappointment. You all are pretty sad gay people. Over it!.
I'm 17 years old and i attended y first pride event this month @ Boqueron, Puerto Rico yay!! it was awesome. the music, the rainbow flags, the bears, the freedom, the party.... everything was cool. I'm looking forward for next year's.
All the days of my life I feel proud of who I am. I don't hide myself from people. I don't care if haters put me down for it. I like myself and I feel comfortable being who I am.i don't care what many people think I carry my rainbow flag way up high OUT ND PROUD
COLORS- THEY MEAN DIVERSITY, LIVING IN HARMONY WELL AT LEAST THAT WHAT IT MEANS FOR ME. wHAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF GOING TO A PRIDE PARADE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE COLORS, THE CHARACTERS, THE MUSIC, THE STARING.... IF YOU(GENERALLY NOT JUST YOU TYLER) HATE THE RAINBOW FLAG, JUST HATE IT. BUT THAT'S NOT BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF. THEY ARE OUR SYMBOLS. WHAT IDENTIFIED US AS A COMUNITY. LIKE THE COUNTRY FLAGS. BUT HEY IT'S AMERICA, IF U HATE IT... JUSTSAYING. LUV YA'LL.
Vancouver's Pride parade is gigantic! I really enjoy the energy - you should come check it out some time. I like seeing rainbow flags- it makes me feel comfortable. I don't know if an equal sign does it for me- it's a little too discreet.
Ive been to 2 pride events both in Manchester England, the first was awesome, then the second wasnt that great, i had just got back from Florida!! So was on a mega downer :( I like going to them but the problem is with the ones in England, well in Manchester, u have to pay like £15/$30 2 get into the area then pay up to £20 to get into a club later to party it up!! so it is waayyy waaayy expensive, just if you were curious of British Gay Pride yeah and i dnt really like the rainbow flag either
Pride events are not for me either, but I wish you would go Tyler because you're a celebrity and in this case it's not so much what Pride can do for you, but what you can do for Pride. I'm sure you can do a lot of good to those confused/closeted/just-out-of-the closet boys out there.
No offense to anyone whatsoever but I always found Japan's flag boring. Seriously? A red dot on a ahite backdrop? Not so creative, just saying at least you have color and a design mor original that a circle.
I think it's boring too, but you have to remember that it probably stands for something. Not all flags are created to look cute, mostly they go way back with the country's history or something.
my ex-girlfriend saw that pin for sale once and got very offended. "who the fuck doesn't like rainbows?!" she exclaimed. this from a girl who dresses almost exclusively in black...
my moms friend was a photographer who was slightly homophobic and was taking pictures at a gay pride event and this drag queen walked up to him and kissed him
I agree with you about the whole thing about going out to pride events and stuff. I don't exactly think it's necessary. And I don't really like the gay flag either. LOL. You should design us a new one =].
Yeah I wish someone had told me what a paw print means in the gay world before I went and got one tattooed on me! It's technically a wolf print but still, all the creepy guys always bring up the bear aspect and I am like no! It is a wolf and it does not mean that!
i think its different depending on where you go to pride. Big cities are alot more fun and those that have a huge gay community are always fun to go to. I live around the boystown area in chicago... and its just a huge part of my community that i cant help but go.
after campaigning on the premise that the defense of marriage act was a disgrace to the nation (which it is) that he would strive to overturn, he kinda turns around and does the opposite. he upheld the thing *and* defended it in terms that compared gay marriage to incest and child-marriage.
just because we elected the charming guy who said he was on our side does *not* mean we don't need to be on our toes for asshattery. because dude. obamafail.
which is not to say i wish mccain had been elected instead. i'm still hella relieved about how all that worked out, and i do have faith that obama will like, stop being an asshat if suitably reprimanded by the people. but that depends on the people being, you know, awake.
come on, 5awesomegays -- i'm a politically lazy canadian *without* an audience of thousands of gay-friendly minds to influence. how am i the only one kicking up a fuss about this in the comments of an american gay channel?
(i wouldn't be acting so disappointed if i didn't adore you. you know that, right? i know this isn't a political channel, but when you have taken time to address political issues, i've always been impressed by how informed, articulate, and rational you guys are. and if there was ever a time to step up and make some noise on an issue...i'm thinkin' this is it.)
I like the flag, but it's not really practical outside of flag form. Belts? Hats? Underwear? That's a bit excessive.
I totally agree about the Pride events. They're tons of fun, but I don't feel I need to broadcast myself. I love being gay, wouldn't change for the world, but I'm not full of pride.
I love the Bear flag! It's the flag of my people, and we're a proud lot. Taking away the Bear flag would be like disallowing people from saying "Woof!" or "Grrr!" It would be terribly disenfranchising. You can take the Bear out of flannel, but you can't take the flannel out of Bear, 'cause that would just be sad and wrong.
hahahahah i love your bracelet!! ^_^ i actually do wanna make one now...anyways, u guys on 5awesomegays have made me realize that just cuz ure gay doesnt necessarily mean u like the flag or the pride events. i guess it was naive of me to think that just cuz u guys r gay u would like all that. thats almost thinking just cuz ure gay u like all guys, which isnt true, bc im straight, but i dont automatically like all guys...i think its a sad thing that some ppl forget that -_- i loved this week!
I'm part of LGBT, one of my best mates had just come out, and is like, coming to terms with it - he hates pride, he thinks it's pointless, I badly wanna go though, and he won't come with me :(
aw Tyler, we are definitely similar, i feel u on the pride thing, i go every year, and the first time it was pretty "fun"..but it wasn't THAT amazing...actually every other year it's been more like annoying since it always seems to be such a dramatic event (Cali prides anyway)...but i still go cuz i love the feeling of having sooo many others like me around that it's comforting which is why i'll always go! P.S. you look gewd tired
I really like that all of you aren't all about shoving your sexuality down everyone's throats; I know a few gay people like that, and it bothers me so much lol. But all of you are wonderful and adorable.
I think you mean Paternal Figure. Fraternal Figure would be a brotherly figure. but vid anyway and I have to agree with you on the whole pride thing, it's more of a freak show.
Once you've seen one pride parade you've seen them all for the most part. It's the pride parties that make this time of year fun for me. Seattle's parade afterparty at the fountain is always a good time like Michael mentioned.
I am a huge supporter of Gay Rights, as well as Gay Pride. However, even I have to admit, the flag is a little much. But then again... have you ever seen the S&M gay flag? Black and Blue, with a red heart in the corner. That's all I have to say.
I went to my first pride event last weekend! I'm a Straight ally for my cousin who came out a couple of years ago. I was able to be on a float with him sponsored by his job, Home Depot.
The goal of Pride in the beginning of course was to grow in numbers through the years getting more and more people to join us to show support. I am afraid by the sound of many people it has reached its peak and is on the slope downwards. When Gay people are ho-hum about it, we can hardly expect anyone else to get too excited about it. I do understand. There was a time it took bravery and PRIDE to march/attend.
That claw flag looks hidious (i doubt i spelled that right) and the flag should be changed to something a little more tastful and not just all colors.
At first, I thought the bear flag was for actual wild bears who wanted to wave flags, but that didn't really make sense, so I googled it. Now I feel silly.
"fraternal figure"?....fraternal means brother..or relating to brotherhood.......that's some messed up shit if you're brother is you're dad..but no judgement :D
Hmmm...None of the gays seem very excited for pride...Not really what I would have thought, but oh, well. I (hopefully) will be atending pride in September. Yay!
I think cat's have more pride.

And yes, I agree w/ Tyler that the bear flag is ugly, but that's not putting down bears, it's just saying their flag is ugly.
Also I don't get why bears hate on the "fashion police" gays (like me:D)..... I'm not saying ALL bears, just some of them.

You seem like one of those gay activists, but you have to understand to some of us, it's just who we have sex with...not our way of life. Don't force your beliefs on others, otherwise you are just as bad as people who want us to be straight...
bwickedintense 2 years ago
totally agree
stilll love you Tyler
Alex270493 2 years ago
No, allowing people to celebrate their differences and be proud of that is what Pride is suppose to be about. I find if funny that you say that you just think it's who you have sex with, yet you're taking interest in 'gay' related things that create a sense of community, much like 5awesomegays does do.
I am not forcing my beliefs on anyone, I'm stating my opinion. You're welcome to take it anyway you want. However, it really irritates me when someone says they don't like pride, and then ...
northstar83 2 years ago
then they don't actually explain themselves.
To just go off on the bears...
northstar83 2 years ago
without really knowing anything about how it works is just sort of ignorant.

I like myself and I feel comfortable being who I am.i don't care what many people think I carry my rainbow flag way up high OUT ND PROUD
boylover77778 2 years ago
THAT'S WHAT PRIDE IS ABOUT
COLORS- THEY MEAN DIVERSITY, LIVING IN HARMONY WELL AT LEAST THAT WHAT IT MEANS FOR ME. wHAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF GOING TO A PRIDE PARADE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE COLORS, THE CHARACTERS, THE MUSIC, THE STARING.... JUSTSAYING. LUV YA'LL.
boylover77778 2 years ago
Vancouver's Pride parade is gigantic! I really enjoy the energy - you should come check it out some time. I like seeing rainbow flags- it makes me feel comfortable. I don't know if an equal sign does it for me- it's a little too discreet.

Ive been to 2 pride events both in Manchester England, the first was awesome, then the second wasnt that great, i had just got back from Florida!! So was on a mega downer :( I like going to them but the problem is with the ones in England, well in Manchester, u have to pay like £15/$30 2 get into the area then pay up to £20 to get into a club later to party it up!! so it is waayyy waaayy expensive, just if you were curious of British Gay Pride yeah and i dnt really like the rainbow flag either
toddybee 2 years ago
Pride events are not for me either, but I wish you would go Tyler because you're a celebrity and in this case it's not so much what Pride can do for you, but what you can do for Pride. I'm sure you can do a lot of good to those confused/closeted/just-out-of-the closet boys out there.

No offense to anyone whatsoever but I always found Japan's flag boring. Seriously? A red dot on a ahite backdrop? Not so creative, just saying at least you have color and a design mor original that a circle.
sararandom 2 years ago
I think it's boring too, but you have to remember that it probably stands for something. Not all flags are created to look cute, mostly they go way back with the country's history or something.

Agree with all of the dislike of the rainbow flag. I actually have a pin that says, "I'm gay but I really don't like rainbows."
...Because it's true.

my ex-girlfriend saw that pin for sale once and got very offended. "who the fuck doesn't like rainbows?!" she exclaimed. this from a girl who dresses almost exclusively in black...

Yeah I wish someone had told me what a paw print means in the gay world before I went and got one tattooed on me! It's technically a wolf print but still, all the creepy guys always bring up the bear aspect and I am like no! It is a wolf and it does not mean that!

and it being held the same time as chicagos most famous festival in the taste of chicago...its just a huge summer staple.
chicagoguy19 2 years ago
i think its different depending on where you go to pride. Big cities are alot more fun and those that have a huge gay community are always fun to go to. I live around the boystown area in chicago... and its just a huge part of my community that i cant help but go.
chicagoguy19 2 years ago
...how did none of you mention the major obamafail this week? i thought y'all were politically active?
emmetgirl 2 years ago
what was the obamafail? Just curious, I don't really care too much for politics :3
Co1dnessCa1ms 2 years ago
after campaigning on the premise that the defense of marriage act was a disgrace to the nation (which it is) that he would strive to overturn, he kinda turns around and does the opposite. he upheld the thing *and* defended it in terms that compared gay marriage to incest and child-marriage.
just because we elected the charming guy who said he was on our side does *not* mean we don't need to be on our toes for asshattery. because dude. obamafail.
emmetgirl 2 years ago
which is not to say i wish mccain had been elected instead. i'm still hella relieved about how all that worked out, and i do have faith that obama will like, stop being an asshat if suitably reprimanded by the people. but that depends on the people being, you know, awake.
come on, 5awesomegays -- i'm a politically lazy canadian *without* an audience of thousands of gay-friendly minds to influence. how am i the only one kicking up a fuss about this in the comments of an american gay channel?
emmetgirl 2 years ago

You can take the Bear out of flannel, but you can't take the flannel out of Bear, 'cause that would just be sad and wrong.

aw Tyler, we are definitely similar, i feel u on the pride thing, i go every year, and the first time it was pretty "fun"..but it wasn't THAT amazing...actually every other year it's been more like annoying since it always seems to be such a dramatic event (Cali prides anyway)...but i still go cuz i love the feeling of having sooo many others like me around that it's comforting which is why i'll always go!
