Of all the music ever created this is the one surreal performance of the most extraordinary movement of the greatest work - Rach 3rd :-)) Rach is not just playing - he is leading and conducting the orchestra!
What a way to "announce" his arrival on American concert stages! Those who heard him live were the luckiest people born :-)))
(continued from previous section).....I found that the conducting and full immersion into SR's concerto #2 sent me into a trance-like state. It was here that now, as an life experienced adult, I was able to access an emotional tidbit from a previous lifetime...one that may have involved SR, or a concert pianist or conductor. I agree that it is a privilege to listed to this recording. Yes, it is also a privilege to listen to Martha Argerich. But her Rach3 is much darker and pessimistic, while in contrast, the Rachmaninoff actually shows here some humour, though obviously he did not have much fun in his life, especially when he was composing this piece. His technique is uncanny and he still does incredible phrasing. And, as a great artist, he recognizes that this is a concerto for piano and ORCHESTRA. A treasure...
Rachmaninoff as a performer is unmatched, never to be even approached. He is the god of piano in bringing to life his compositions and others', in creating emotion and beauty, in his supreme clarity, color, tone, dynamics and he performed at very fast tempi ! Horowitz came close, Gilels and Van Cliburn came close, Richter did not play this because he said he was not good enough ! Argerich's Rach3 is great (a bit too slow) and Jung Lin's is also great:-) IMO
@SevenCircles LOL I know right!? Slow is the last thing which comes into MOST everyone's mind (the exception being barbarossa333) when considering Argerich's Rach 3.
Rachmaninov lived in Russia from birth to 1917 at the age of 44 he left Russia for good never to return. After spending time in Europe he settled in America. He dies at Beverly Hills on the 28th March 1943 aged 70.
@62denmark Rachmaninoff moved to New York in 1919 and settled there. There is a movie in youtube of Rachmaninoff and his family at their house in the 1930s. Horowitz also left the Soviet Union and moved to New York in 1928. They were very close as artists and personal friends.
Of all pianists, Argerich matches his third movement closely....and for those who discredit her amazing talent for his third concerto are incredibly ignorant.
@liszt07 Argerich is a great pianist. She is one of the greatest pianists around today. I do agree that nobody can play this concerto better than Rachmaninov himself, because he was a great musician, and because he wrote the piece himself. He too was a musical genius, and an amazing pianist.
argerich?i think she cant play like that .or any pianist on world.cause its came from soul.and from fast fingers and passionate.argerich even cant be Rachmaninov's shit.what u talking about fucking stupid.i fuck argerich ok?she just a stupid woman who think that she can play piano.
@planetalalala What makes you think she is so full of herself? She's actually notoriously insecure. And shallow mind? LOL. I don't even know what to say to that...
What's so great about this is a total lack of over sentimentality that can simply kill this music. This is a beautiful rendition; play with total ease even though we know how terrified he often felt before having to perform it. I was told that he used to calm himself down with a creme de menthe before going on.
Cyprien Katsaris who also recorded with Ormandy was saying a story that Ormandy himself related to him. It goes something like this: When the young Ormandy was conducting with Rachmaninov at the piano, he lost his place in the music and kinda looked at Rachmaninov in dispair, who glared at him and in a grave voice said: PLAY!!!
Rachmaninoff knows himself; he played the third movement the fastest it can be without becoming kind of sloppy (a la Argerich). He played the second movement with such a mellow sound that it sounded melancholy.
I'm guessing you're quoting my comment on Argerich?
It's not really that fast, Horowitz has made a faster recording. I get what you mean though. But it all comes down to personal preference. Some might find it too fast, others might find it perfect.
I like her renditions, but I do prefer Horowitz. I also have a Sokolov recording, a bit slower, but it's a very emotional rendition!
Magic!

that descending passage at 4:03 is perfect when Rachmaninov plays it. And the bass B flat is just gorgeous

Argerich is a pianist, she often plays very fast, but even at those speeds, she still manages to keep the piece coherent and sound like it should..
