Jeff is so good that it would be impertinent to question his judgement on which players to select. However, this bass player, like Stanley Clarke, stays so much in the high register that I wonder why they don't just play a Strat instead. For me Tal Wilkenfeld, who plays soft, warm and deep, compliments Jeff much better. After all, what could Jeff really play against this? Perhaps I'm wrong in judging this on a bravura section but I wouldn't pay to see this - it's not what bass is about IMO.
You know I am really glad to see women rising up to REALLY play, young ladies like Tal & Rhonda, and fusion keyboardist Patrice Rushin and Blues guitar crooner Bonnie Raitt have some serious chops that deserve respect... they have made it a very interesting mix.
@lastdaysguitar Same here. Don't forget Sheila E, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Candy Dulfer and (somewhat old school ? ) the mighty Jennifer Batten. All of them beautiful and talented women!!!!! ♥
Well to judge on a bassist is hard to do behind your computer, especially with these camera mics.. You should need to be live in the audience to tell! :)
haha not that i hate rhonda, her harmonic is so damnnn **&*(&^! but i just prefer tal with jeck for some unknow reason. Like she is more suited ? haha i dont know
All the haters and the nay-sayers haven't a fuckin' clue. Rhonda Smith has played with two of the greatest musicians in history. One being Jeff Beck and the other, none other that Prince himself! And what, you idiot commenters think you know better than they do? Get a fuckin' grip!
the biggest diff is the drummer. the previous drummer was much better, meaning the band sounded a lot tighter. When I saw them in Nashville the sound was WAY too bass heavy and the bass drum and bass wqere too loud and drowning Jeff out, which was terrible. In Nashville I can see the Wooten brothers all the time but Jeff only once in a long while. Jeff really needs to get Jaco Pastorius and mitch mitchell and professor longhair to be in his band and then things would be perfect.
MrFender2525 there are easy things that sounds great. All of the Beatles songs is pretty easy to play if you're a good guitarist, but it sounds great.
Slapping the Bass is an 80's thing...and one of the easier things to do on a bass...Been playing 30 yrs...Rhonda's not even close to having the talent of Tal..Jeff could tell you that! btw...the goofy faces have to go..you're not with princess anymore!
People seem to want to compare Rhonda and Tal for some reason, pitting one against the other. Two completely different types of bassist.
Good on Jeff for constantly changing his band and getting different types of sound for the audience.
As for who i think is best, as one of them is a long time member of the NPG and the other recently toured with Herbie, I aint gonna make a fool of myself by suggesting one over the other.
@pablohanc Excellent comment...this channel has too many bad comments flying around...I cant stand all of the negativity...Let's just enjoy the music and thank all of the people posting the great videos..Thanks pablohanc
This is vintage beck with the best band around as usual. He has never played too long with any band and often reunites with members but does not define his music with one sound or one band. I seldom get bored listening to Jeff Beck from mid 1960's to now.
I can not for the love of god find anything appealing with Rhonda Smiths way of playing. I miss Tal W. The dynamics between Jeff and Tal was astonishing. With Rhonda there is nothing. No dynamic between her and Jeff at all. Zero. While I'm at it. I can't stand Narada Michael Walden either. Vinnie Colaiuta outplays Narada at any given time. So we have Beck at his peak and two sub-standard musicians. My two cents, for what it is worth.
@mrgordons Well... compared to Ronda, Tal sucks, Ok, she's cute, bla bla bla... but when it comes to music, Mamma mia, there's a whole world between them! Narada is a beast, I really appreciate Colaiuta but I must say that Narada suits better Beck's stuff.
@danstortion Watch the extras on Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's. Beck compares Tal to jaco Pastorius, the Jimi of bass. Why oh why oh why do people constantly trash those great artists they don't get??? Tal is great, amazing according to Jeff. But apparently others here think they know better than he..... Rhonda is wonderful as well but like comparing steak to lobster. Both great but not the same. Tal doesn't "suck" compared to ANY bassists. Pino Palladino thinks she's great too!
I took my wife who had never been to a Jeff Beck show to see this. When Rhonda kicked it in, we were both blown away! Wow!!!! The walls were rumblin'.
I WANT TO HEAR BECK PLAY MORE
