fyi, the sisters and alice/drums were originally a LATE 60's "cover band" (named Wild Honey) working the Reno/Tahoe showroom/bar circuit, playing heavy Motown and "beatles covers." so they were really a 60's band straddling two decades.
the runaways were one of the worst bands of all time (they were just kids to begin with)....GIRLSCHOOL were the killer NWOBHM hard rock group (with several UK hit singles and two hit albums ). not the fuckin runaways, give me a fuckin break people
And what is it that you find wrong/incorrect/inaccurate in that description? FANNY preceded ALL these groups, or did you miss the mention of their years of existence?
Yes, but please read the ENTIRE description to understand my point more clearly - Fanny were the first self- founded, all-female band to record for a MAJOR RECORD LABEL - which would be Warner Bros.' Reprise division. Crucial distinction there.
correction: Goldie and the Gingerbreads were the first all female rock/pop band to be signed and released by a major label . Signed by Ahmet Ertegun in 1964 to Atlantic Records.
Of all the covers Fanny arranged/performed (an impressive list including "Badge", "Special Care", and a fantastic "Hey Bulldog" (which I am pleased to note is also up on YouTube), this remains my favorite, even though I haven't heard it in WAY too many years.
No disrespect intended to the late Mr. Gaye, but this cover IMO knocks spots off his original. June's slide solos are truly BLISTERING, but EVERYBODY in the band rocks!
Marian, thanks SO much for giving us this treasure!!!
Wow... this still sounds great! A combination of Motown with a bit of Southern Rock slide. I prefer this to Marvin Gaye, especially the half-time Beatley mid bit that takes us into the guitar solo.
I have started my past two mornings with this video, then Fanny's 'Badge' cover, and then Fanny's 'Hey Bulldog' cover. Just thought I would let you know because I really am lovin' it. Thanks for the uploads
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This has been the proven hardest song to find period. It's from my days at ETSU and I had just about given up looking for it. It's been ages since I heard it even. I would have been 20 when that came out. I'm sorry for these generations that have not had the benefit of listening to music of this caliber. They really set a high standard for those who came after them. Really envious of those who got to see them in person! Rock On Indeed!
Saw them when I was 18 and I have to admit they are an teenage boys wet dream. I was more familiar with this version than the original. Whenever I hear the Marvin Gaye version, I wonder where the slide guitar riff went to. Haven't heard this version in 40 years and still remember that slide guitar. Sounded as good as Duane Allmann from Derek and the Dominos album.
I thought Suzi Quatro's sister was in the band.I have seen a CD "Fanny:The Repreise Years" One the album "Fanny" with there kinda biggest hit "I've Had It" They look all glam. Was this a redone "Fanny" on Casablanca Records? Bizzarre but that mostley aknown to be a disco/soundtrack label, Fanny was signed one year after KISS and they put out 17 albums with the label.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for posting this fantastic rendition of the Marvin Gaye classic!!! I've been looking for this particular "version" on YouTube for a long time! I absolutely loved this version when it first came out in 1972. It is extremely difficult for anyone to outdo any particular world-famous classic hit song but, in this case, I believe "Fanny" did!! Their version is original and is a classic in its own right!!!
@sweedlepipe, actually the lead singer here is Jean Millington (bassist).
But June (also Millington) had a good voice too, as did Nickey Barclay (keyboardist). And Alice De Buhr (drummer) was good on back-up vocals...just not the greatest _lead_ singer. ;-)
well wasnt the fanny i was lookin for but good aweeesame

@WWAHP Probably Dakota Fanning or the girl from Red Riding hood to play June

@mariandelochs But your descript reads: 'Before the Runaways, The Bangles(?!?), the GoGos...'

Yes, you're right - but Fanny were the first to achieve international success. I think I should add that qualifier to the description above. Thanks!

The singer has a very smooth voice which seems to glide out of the speakers. This is something I've always liked about this song.
I think the singer is the guitarist.? June?
sweedlepipe 1 year ago 5
@sweedlepipe
I think Jean handled most of the lead vocals, but I can't be 100% certain.

@sweedlepipe It's June, and she does have a great voice.
