I just started playing this game today. its the first time i try sh franchise, i like the game, a bit slow paced but its fine with me. I destroyed around 20 ships today, but it seem i can't remove the auto-aiming function. Maybe i have to install some patch not sure if i'm at 1.1 or 1.3. Still the auto-aiming is bad, they miss half the time. And for some reason i can't use radars on my sub 1941-1942 campaign is it normal ? Maybe its the class of my ship because he as 6+4 torpedoes salves.
Son of a bitch...I swore to my freshmen geometry teacher that I would never use anything he taught us for anything...I guess I owe someone an apology.
@EccentricGentelman And also remember to punch the speed data through, I couldn't work out why it wasn't traking, it was because I had set a speed but not sent it to the computer.
Im sick and tired of seeing people think they are cool or something by just calculating a couple of things and sink some stuff... I play this game from the beginning, total realism ( except for external view ) and its ****ing easy, why do people keep uploading their shitty attacks... Pff, anyways, I was just going to say TY for helping newbies. I myself learned how to play it
This video does explain a lot but the one thing you dont say is how to get the ships speed iv done this very same practice mission on my SH4 and i could not work out the speed so i played using the auto targeting system to find out and the speed of that ship never changes for this mission,so what i want to know is how do you work out the ships speed because in this video you just say estimate well you cant just estimate because 99% of the time you will miss and waste your torpedo's.
@richyloike Well, at the time I made the video the stopwatch-speed-thing at the right was broken. As in didn´t do anything at all. I believe they fixed this in one of the patches though.
Have you updated the game and then tried clicking on the stopwatch? I think you´re supposed to click it, wait a little while and then click it again and you should get a pretty accurate speed-estimate.
hey man just wanted to say i appreciate the instructions on how to set up a torpedo attack, i just got the game a couple days ago and i dont understand anything when it comes to how torpedo attacks work...all those dials and numbers didn't make any sense to me...so i just pointed the sub towards the enemy, fired and prayed it would hit something. this video helps me out alot thanks again!
honorarium and to dò with in the distance before the boat and of the movement it stops in the module behind asshole with a black point, pagination of the right during the computer
Ok, last comment i swear... You don't need the speed estimating tool to get the speed : just do two range+bearing measurements, count the number of seconds between the two, and draw a line between the two positions. The line gives you the aob, its lenght gives you the speed with s=d/t...
@OldDirtyRatbastard Yeah, I´ve read about that speed estimation-thing but I couldn´t be bothered to use it. And besides, at the time the game was such a buggy mess anyway I would just end up calculating most things myself. For one thing, mast height for most ships were wrong meaning all range estimates were off. A lot of misses before I figured that one out...
@threedotsdead Well, if the game was that flawed back then (i don't remember it to be, but i believe you), relying on automatization for the solutions probably wasn't a good solution either... The TDC didn't update correctly and the stadimeter could crash the game... Calculating "everything" by hand isn't complicated at all, much more efficient and most importantly, realistic. But it's a game, so the interest is to play it however we want to, i guess.
Grüße Fräulein, Sturm-Verbot-Führer, In last I played the ship military of yomato one, not everything, with that the application of which it used to Manuel in the distance I gave For, that directs with the card of the attack, I that I begin the diffusion with the twenty and evaluate the torpedo to the great fire of the
But it's true that the AOB is much more practical to estimate... One could wonder if the TDC doesn't use the compass to convert the AOB into a relative bearing to keep the solution "fresh"...
@threedotsdead No offense, but this isn't realistic at all and all your measurements except range are wrong. What you're naming "AOB" is in fact the relative bearing. The AOB in this case would be around 85° starboard. "estimating" the speed visually like you did probably means that you played the mission before and remembered the value, because it's next to impossible to just "guess" the speed ingame. The torpedoes only hit because the cruiser was close and your AOB not too false.
@OldDirtyRatbastard You´re wrong: "Angle on the bow - Relative bearing of submarine from the target ship measured to starboard or port from the target ship's head from 0° to 180°."
Regarding speed, then yes, that wasn´t completely accurate. At the time I did the video the in-game speed estimation tool (stopwatch) was broken, so you had to guess speed by checking speed estimation on the map and observing wake-size.
@threedotsdead Hey, you're right, my bad. Still, it's unrealistic to directly measure the value on the map.
Anyway, this means that the AOB changes all the time, and that's one more thing for the TDC's update to loose accuracy on... Even worse for non updating TDCs (U-boats). What i meant with AOB was relative bearing, i always calculate solutions with it because it never changes : it's the angle between the sub's bearing and the target's bearing.
I prefer firing 2 magneticly ignited torpedoes when attacking a battleship. Even if one fails the ship usually is damaged enough to stop engines or slow down , so you can finish it with another one - and torpedoes are scarce (i play SH III so wasting 4 out of 14 to sink one ship is not a good idea, especially when in the middle of Atlantic Ocean ).
In the video I´m submersed but my periscope is up. As long as your periscope is sticking out of the water all nearby ships will appear on the map. If they still don´t show up I guess you must have encountered some kind of bug. Running the latest patch?
Haha wow that was awesome cheers. But wouldn't all that take too long? I mean, all that fiddling around. Was that ship you destroyed moving at the time or not?
Not sure if I understand you correctly, but as far as I know the campaign is entirely randomly generated. So ship positions and the like won´t be the same from campaign to campaign.
The best advice I can give is to set up a search pattern with the waypoint-thing at the location on the map and run surfaced until you find your target.
thanks for this. I'm still trying to get it right. Presently I have torpedoes going off at near 90 degree angles to my target. Practice makes perfect, they say.
I played that torpedo lesson at school submarine but at the angle on bow on the map shows me that it is an angle of about 73 but there on the persicope I don't have any 73.
If i understand correctly, everything in 3D lags... then, sorry m8 but you'll have to go spend some money on hardware... (or reduce your graphical settings if you didnt do that already) - Sh4 is quite "heavy"... i know...
I don't think there is a way. If you're looking for performance you'll probably have to upgrade a few things on your computer. My graphics card overkill for this game but under time compression it still chokes a little. That tells me it's very processor dependent.
For switching what method the torpedoes use to detonate. Contact means they have to hit their target.
If you use magnetic they will go off when passing within a few meters of a ships hull. That way, if you make them run deep enough, you can make them explode under the ship and break the keel, causing more damage.
I don´t know how they did it IRL, but if you´re facing a moving warship that can sink you in seconds if they notice you I´d say it´s better to be sure to take them out with the first salvo.
i have always wanted top see a torpedo hit from the periscope view in this game. i think i'll need to buy it for that, as it is probably very boring waiting for it to hit :-D
More: Once i recheck everything and sure its all right just like on this guide, i fire the torpedo only to watch it not even come close. I mean its off by a mile. Seems the only way i can kill anything is by using my deck gun...
This doesnt work. I tried it on the turial and it hit, but when your actually shooting ships in the game its way off.
Iv been trying the manuall TDC for like 3 days straight now and its really pissing me off. I cant hit ships that are directly in front of me. I tried the exact same way the guy did in this tutorial, By making a line in front of the ship to the middle and then to mine and taking that angle and putting into the TDC the ship hight ect, Guess speed. Once i recheck everything
i have wanted to do that for a long time ever sense i bought it i got it because my fav movie U-571 but when i try to play it. it goes so slow and crashes
And if you got enough time, you can make a mark on the ships location on your map, wait 15 seconds, mark the second location and then messure the distance between the marks... Remember that if you are using the metric system, on knot = 1,852 km´s...
thankyou so much for the tutorial, i could never figure out how to get the angle on bow for the attacks, but really enjoyed SH3 on full realism just that angle on bow really messed me up thanks for the show you helped me a lot
There is a switch titled "Torpedo Detonation Method" that has two settings: "Contact" and "Contact influence". The latter of the two is the "magnetic" setting.
Be careful though. the influence setting isn't reliable all the time.
in my copy all i got was the keyboard shortcut print-out for a manual.which i agree, does not give you any info on how to play the game what-so-ever. i highly recommend checking out the pdf manual found in the c/program files/ubisoft/documentation file. this does help alot.even though you have to have a 160 i.q. to understand the vernacular contained there-in.the video is nice b.t.w.
-Take a distance reading, DO NOT lock on to the target, take it near the bow(front)
-Wait 3-5 minutes then take a second distance reading
-Use the estimate speed button to get speed, enter that
-After estimate speed comes an estimated course, spin the AOB until the top left dial is pointing towards the estimated course given making sure it is correctly either to port or starboard (as in are you on THEIR starboard or THEIR port)
hey people whenever i try to play a mission right before im about to start it says unknown target or "null" i've already tried to uninstall and reinstall like 3 times..
If you have any info please message me on how to fix.
there are 2 types of radars in the early part of the game, surface and air, surface is at the begin an sj radar and air an sd radar. Sd radar is always on, to put the sj radar on, just go to the radar station and press the radar on button
when i play in the carrier mode its a mision when i must patrole the east china sea ,i go to the point on the map and nothin happened, can you tell me what should i do?
you should stay in the spor for 48 hours. go as deep as you can to the point where the binocular is, then submerge and wait for 48hours(2 days). dont hesitate to fight.
Managed to get the buttons (Realism turned on^^) but ive got a terrible bug, if i set that gostpic of the target my game suddenly crashes... :( what can i do? plz tell me
good job this helped alote. One question though. When one of your crew members says somthing like ship at bearing 225 does that mean 225 on the compass?
I recommend to change "noob" for "newbie". Noob is players that desotrys fun of playing for everyone in e.g. server. BTW. Can you walk around submarine (inside)?
And no, there´s no "walking around", but all (or at least most) of the interiors are fully rendered/animated and you can use mouselook to look around and flip switches etc.
if you download the Pacific Enviroments 4 mod, you can actually walk around in the sub, and the graphics are awesome, but it sure has an impact on you fps
thanks it helped me a lot. when i started the game i dont understand how to shot and hit the target but when you showed how to do it it was easy but i needed to train first THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Videos! I am fairly new to silent hunter and very interested in it. This video certainly has helped allot! I am using SH3 tho but will grab SH4 in a few days. THX!
Thanks a lot:) Although I couldn´t get the text and stuff quite right because I can´t use Windows movie maker and I´m not very good with the program I used instead.
How do you line up the range? Do you line up the tip of the masts?

-Use the estimate speed button to get speed, enter that
-After estimate speed comes an estimated course, spin the AOB until the top left dial is pointing towards the estimated course given making sure it is correctly either to port or starboard (as in are you on THEIR starboard or THEIR port)
-Fire with a 3/0/-1/-3 spread

how do you Get the radar to work?
Nathan13954 3 years ago
there are 2 types of radars in the early part of the game, surface and air, surface is at the begin an sj radar and air an sd radar. Sd radar is always on, to put the sj radar on, just go to the radar station and press the radar on button

VishyHollywood 3 years ago
you should stay in the spor for 48 hours. go as deep as you can to the point where the binocular is, then submerge and wait for 48hours(2 days). dont hesitate to fight.
cubismo85 3 years ago
you must patrol for 48 hours in a circle with a radius of 50 nm at that point

Lahtzarus 3 years ago
If you're talking about the torpedo selector, with all the green lights, it's probably that your sub only has 3 torpedoes.

I recommend to change "noob" for "newbie". Noob is players that desotrys fun of playing for everyone in e.g. server. BTW. Can you walk around submarine (inside)?
Pawlerski 4 years ago
Hehe, I had no idea there was a difference.
And no, there´s no "walking around", but all (or at least most) of the interiors are fully rendered/animated and you can use mouselook to look around and flip switches etc.
threedotsdead 4 years ago
if you download the Pacific Enviroments 4 mod, you can actually walk around in the sub, and the graphics are awesome, but it sure has an impact on you fps
