I saw this in person as a child. It is what inspired my love for explosives, and likely led to me enlisting in the Canadian Forces as a Combat Engineer.
I was born in that hospital, and was there with my wife and son to watch it go down. Its still odd to drive through there now with a park and some condos in it's place. Did they sell off the land, that was prime space right off of a major road.
@bergsteinlife Actually, It was closed because it had old plumbing, electrical wiring and other shit that would have cost more to remodel than to rebuild.
I lived in the community of Ramsay, on the south side of the Bow River a couple kilometers from the community of Bridgeland where this hospital was located. I placed a glass of water on my coffee table the morning of this demolition, and watched carefully as the water moved within the glass during the implosion.
Yeah go figure...when the population was 50,000 we had two inner city hospitals; The General, and The Holy Cross. Now we're over 1,000,000...and not one inner city hospital.
I remember this even tho I was only 3 at the time. I remember my dad on his bike riding us up to the top of a hill and then BOOM and we watched it go down. Does anyone know why it went down ?
@garycalgary The new hospital in the south side of the city is estimated to be about 1.7 billion by the time its finished in 2017. 500 million to refurbish the General right in the downtown seems like a better deal.
aparently they set a world record for most buildings imploded at once. 12 building where imploded in total. they where connecting to each other(hospital expansion ect). i could see the dust cloud from shawnessy.
its been passed by china now, they did 16 at once, although 1 didnt come down so 15. They should have upgraded this building, they could have done amazing upgrades and saved money instead of building new hospital in south. Calgary city planners are idiots. as you can see by our projects and how they are done, I really wish they could learn to build roads, and interchanges correct DONT PUT LIGHTS ON OVER PASSES when you are trying to speed up roads lol
@thesix107 depending where ur from. what job u are looking for. for you, i will try to help as much as possible. i hate seeing the world in such as drismal place.
if u live in alberta i can help you out (maybe). for now use youtube for comuniication of your interested. i will help people online as long as they don't fuck me around. you haft to understand that
Man, I was born in that hospital! Out of curiousity, could anyone tell me the former address/general location where the Calgary General Hospital was, and/or what's there now?
The community it was in is called Renfrew. They have buit condos on that site. Sad because the city has grown to well over a million people and we need more hospitals here.
Nice to see this video. I drilled 50% of the holes for the Dynamite. I don't quite rember but i think it was 9 buildings simultaneously.

Seems silly to demolish a well located hospital. The people responsible should have thought 5 years in advance.

Sad to see. I was born in that hospital in the 50's. Went to school in the shadow of CGH. I suppose that area is full of condo's now.

In retrospect, this turned out to be a bad decision as the population of Calgary boomed. Now Calgary is running out of hospital spaces.

Apparently it was part of the Liberal Party's quick reduction of the deficit mainly through cuts to spending 1994-98.

@wackywaving to save the general would have cost $500 million to upgrade heating and a number of other improvements

they don't give 2 shits about the employees.
trust me my dad is an civil engineer.
americans(u.s.a.) don't seem to have any heart when it comes to business.
everything is MONEY MONEY MONEY.
most companies don't give 2 shits about world advancment.
