hey man! I gotta say nice job although that was quite a talkative intro but nontheless you demonstrated that well. I have also been using Live for about 2 years now and naturally theres always tons of stuff to learn but I enjoy it. Do you teach anyone or any classes?
@hugboat808 yeah but I think its quicker to access drums this way, and easier to isolate them and drop them out in session view if they are on a track.
yo new guy the ableton.. got an mpk25 just to throw that out there.. but a very basic and probably stupid question to you, but where do you get all the drum loops that you work with on these videos, really like what your teaching but I wanna find a solid resource for sampling so I can get started on my own.. thanks for any help
@bmf3122 If you go to my website under drum kits I have a USB key for sale that contains all the drum sounds I have purchsed, found, smapled and downloaded over the years. Over 10,000 sounds.
@tylus17 Macs are basically industry standard. I don't know why you think that they are limited in those areas. They are probably harder to PIRATE VSTs on. But...
Good tut man. You are spot on that you don't need hardware anymore to do ANY type of sample based music. Ableton is king and I'm glad to see some hip hop coming out of it.
How do you deal with background noise on breaks? I don't mind a little crackle throughout the whole track, but I have problems when I chop out my individual drums, as opposed to just looping a break. For example if I was to isolate my kick there would be a significant boost in noise/hiss when each one is triggered. I can put a low pass filter on to take out some noise but this kills the sound of the drum.
@dankirouac that is a problem. sometimes it will not show depending on your arrangement of everything else, sometimes it means getting a better sample, sometimes it means using a noise reduction plug in, aggressive eq, multiband dynamics, hiding it with reverb etc... The solutions that work for me are usually a multiband compressor, and making sure your chops last 1/16th. dont play the hat chops over kicks that have hats or snares with hats. Or just leave it if it sound funky fuck it.
The real Beat Clinic Studio is in Killeen Tx., Hand Over Fist Productiion. This is not the original beat clinic. Some guy thats an imposter. The real BEAT CLINIC IS WAAAYYY BETTER!!!! COMING SOON!!!!!
@DUB955 When you get your shit together, I hope to see some dope beats man. Good luck. and if you google beat clinic, there's about 9 million results. So if you want to waste your time sending hate mail, you got a looooooooooooooooooong way to go. I suggest you spend your time learning how to make beats, cuz I got this funny hunch that you're wack.
MY MAIN QUESTION IS CAN YOU RECORD A SAMPLE, SAY A STRING SAMPLE YOU RECORD FROM VINYL INTO ABLETON AND THEN HAVE POLYPHONIC SOUNDS OR /DIFFERENT PITCHES FROM TRIGGERING THE KEYBOARD
@bTast3r the sample is "impeach the President" by The Honeydrippers. I will be linking you guys up with a lot of resources when my website is finished.
Thanks for your videos, great help for a begginer like me.
I have a trumpet loop (wav) and i want to sustain the last trumpet note (the tail of the wav) troughout the whole next loop. How can i do this in an easy way?
If you would like to do that, open up the MIDI instrument "Sampler" or "Simpler"
There will be a button called "loop" that you can click on or off. when that button is selected, your sample will repeat for the length of your MIDI note. The loop region can be adjusted so that only the end of a sample loops, so that you get a clean tail on a sound or as long as you need. Overlap sounds by duplicating the track, and alternating.
like how you think Saintjasin, proper work. When you get up on the Live 8 (if its not in live 5) theres the drum rack and the side chain setup which allows to do all those setups from one track. Like how you put the kick and snare (if i remember correct) on one track, separate from the hihat etc. so as to bypass the limits of impulse effect add on.
Whats happenin man? Really appreciate the video! All goin good until 4:43.
I've done everything the same as the vid, but when I set the metronome, adjust the tempo and double click on the play button, I just hear the metronome sound (The hat noise and red visuals don't appear) I've no idea why. I'm using ableton 7. Thanks man
okay, I was playing those hats on the keyboard...sorry that I didn't make that more clear, but I press the topmost (global) play button, double click in the scene where I will be recording notes to create a 1 bar loop, then push the play button on that same scene until you see the cursor moving along with the tempo. That was not automatic, I was playing the notes, and had 16th quantization turned on so that they would fall on beat.
in the upper left corner, there should be a vertical column of 6 or 7 icons, right under the TAP button. The second one, that looks like tiny Ableton window is the Ableton instruments, the third one that looks like a plug are your third-party VST plug-ins. If you have any third party AU or VST instruments, you have to make sure they are in the correct folder, or set a custom folder for Live to scan
I am feeling you man.I was a MPC dude back in the day and Live is the best thing going if you are comming from the hard ware side. All of these programs are what you make of it man.I just compress and eq to add punch to the drums myself.
Very nice tricks man, i love hip hop althought thats not what i do i am into electronic music but i ran into your tutorial watching Ableton's clinics and i think its way better than all that crap you see on the tube. Peace ;)

Man, I forgot how time consuming this used to be back in Live 5... really.
You have to get 8. Slice that loop to new midi track and then everything is all laid out individually so you can add effects or whatever settings - save the setting so it's just one click next time - crazyy... drop the MPC swing or whatever u want... i love this shit... nothing better than live. I used an MPC for years
yeah I know I gotta get the dough to upgrade...I dont really like the new warp system much yet and I was just gonnna sit on 5 for a while, but I upgraded my OS and now it has bugs on 5, so I gotta upgrade. I got so used to not having slice to midi that I dont even do beats that way no more...I will have to get used to it again...my controller is mad dusty lol
yes zir basic tips can go a long way....Although I'm a hardware head mpc / ASR 10..Ableton is probably one of the best software programs out that will get the job done..I use it with my hardware mostly for tracking.
you dont need to make a seperate midi track for the drum rack, you can add effects to each individual sound and expand the channels in the mixer for full control. thats why the drum rack is so cool!
hey nice vid. can you tell me pls how i can let the samples play. you see... when I put down a sample to my drum rack. and hit the trigger on my MPD. it just plays the part as long as i put the trigger. i want to hit the trigger and let the whole sample play... how can i do that? thanks!!
