  • The world lost a great talent when he pass on.

  • RIP Harry

  • I saw him in concert many times. He put on a great show and was just great to his fans

  • hahah water town is a bob evans resturant, two hotelas, a walmart, applebees, mall, and 4 houses. hahaha its rediclious. oh and a post office... hahaha im so very sad i never got to meet harry before he passed away...

  • i spent a week there! one afternoon! sheer class so sorry he passed away...

  • I've only ever read good things about that Harry Chapin here : )

  • i'm from a half hour north of watertown and he was right...it doesn't deserve much applause at all

  • i remember a story about harry when he was scheduled for a concert in minnesota maybe.. but there was a massive snowstorm and he was thre or four hours late. when he finally got there ther were only 5 or six people there. (massive snowstorm) and he sat down and played for four hours for those 5 or six people. u could also rent him to play ur backyard bbq's or wat ever for a donation to his food search charity. trully a class act and class person. not to mention a great preformer. h u r missed

  • RIP HARRY

  • OK, it's "fornication," but this is possibly the most beautiful expression of the Christian sharing of love that has ever been manifested in art.

  • oh, how many nights I played his music......now albums are gone and I am replacing them with cd's....really hoping his family puts all his music on dvd's. He sold out every concert and that was fantastic since he got such little air time. He was aways better live than studio......on everything he did. I really think he needed us as much as we needed him.....and hs world hunger work was ahead of his time.......How proud I was to support him!

  • "I wish that I were beautiful, or you were half way blind---I wish I weren't so God dam fat,

I wish that you were mine, and if you want me to go with you, then that's alright with me---cause I know I'm going nowhere, and any where's a better place to be." Very powerful line, I keep singing it over & over....Harry, where ever you are, we miss you, and I hope that the wheels on that TAXI are still rollin' R I P.................

  • Thankyou momma and daddy for introducing me to all of the great music...wouldn't be the same JOJO without it!

  • Great man, I love him

  • There is a little bit of Watertown in most of us. I use to be one of many young girls. Later on in life I was the bartender. Now I listen to songs like this one with a tear in my eye for all the great singers who have gone before and left us with wonderful memories. And thank you for posting.

  • I saw him in LaFayette,IN (Purdue U.) in 1978 when I was a freshman at St. Joseph's U. (Rennselaer). I was a southern boy that had his music on, believe it or not, an 8-track. I was against the door out of a gym and he banged on it to come out to go to the auditorium. It was a great experience.

  • Man... He should have a much higher place in American music. He's one of the best, Joni, Bob, Harry....

  • There is so much in this voice: It's not only listening to a beautiful song. It's like watching a *****-movie. What an impressive performance. Wonderful !

  • I'd love to see a movie made about Harry. Who could play him? Hmmmmmmmm?

  • God takes the best. I'm going to look up Johnny Horton.

  • Thanks. " She was so dam beautiful she could warm a winter frost" They just dont write them like that anymore. Things like Suite Judy Blue Eyes and "Ruby throated sparrow" and "Thrill me to the marrow" I am putting together a list. Man, there were some great lyrics out there once upon a time. Any thoughts?

  • My favorite life lyrics are, based on some bad experiences, are (1) "Anywhere's a better place to be" and (2) "We'd both got what we asked for such a long, long time ago"--from Harry's tune "Taxi"

  • Thank U

  • I heard Harry and the band sing this great song at a concert in Charleston, WV almost 30 yaers ago. What a talent this guy was. Sing it in heaven Harry!

  • anywhere is a better place to be harry !!!!!

  • I saw Harry and company 4 or 5 times. The Temple Music Fest in Ambler, and the Mann Center in Philly. The shows were always amazing, and he did a meet and greet each time. Hearing of his death was as bad as hearing about Croce, Lennon, Joplin, Hendrix, and all those who shaped our music. God Speed to all of them, what a concert they must be hosting. Save me a seat!!

  • Yes, save me a seat too. Jesus must Love You.

  • I was born in 79'. My parents were both big fans- I remember running around the kitchen floor in my socks singing this stuff at like 5 and 6 years old. I remember being disappointed when I found out I would never see him play live.

  • I miss Harry!

  • This song makes me cry.

  • i love this song..i love harry..thanks for the inspiration...

    DJKRIS2FUR

  • I have this cd........... I <3 it

  • bloody ripper

  • An old friend gave me this albumb on cassete a long time ago but this song was cut short. Now thanks to whoever put this on here I can hear it in all it's glory. What a fantastic song what a fantastic singer. Thanks Harry! Thanks friend!

  • I was lucky enough to see Harry live a few times, and he was my Idol. Forever humble and polite. He was an example to me to live my life with thought for others. He was, in my opinion, the greatest singer-songwriter of my generation. I still miss him greatly to this day, and his music makes me laugh, cry, and smile. Quite a feat from one human to another.

Thank you Harry. You are greatly missed, and the world is poorer for your passing. RIP.

  • thank you who put this on the tube. thank you harry, for without you we would not dream with the same vision.

  • thank harry

  • such a beautiful song. This song touches me deep in my heart and soul..

  • haha thats hilarious

  • This song reminds me that lonliness and depression are an epidemic in the world today. Do you know someone who is lonely? If so, visit or call them and remind them that you love them

  • cwhitelock..didnt you see him in 1980?

  • thanks for posting this. this man is one of the greatest song writers of the past generation.

  • I think he's one of the greatest song writers. I mean all of his songs tell you stories that you can formulate pictures of so clearly, and each is very descriptive and vivid.

  • to cwhitelock....1981,i dont think so,get your years right..

  • Only 500 characters! I could go on! Some of the lyrics have improved and inspired my life. The haunting music and Big John's vocal range tug heartstrings and stand hair up on back of neck. He began the idea, with Gordon Lightfoot, which led to Live Aid 1985

  • Saw Harry in Croydon Surrey 1981 the year he died I only knew WOLD I learned songs that night never forgot them Bought Sequel Album and began to collect his music His phrases remain "She was so damn beautiful she could warm a winter frost" "Sometimes you don't find what you're feeling til all the words run out" I love everything Mr Tanner Better Place Old John Joseph and Story of a Life are my favourites My daughter and granddaughter take his music voice words to the future

  • Harry's music celebrates the common person. It's no wonder he found inspiration in Watertown, NY. It is the perfect backdrop for a Harry Chapin song!

  • Its extremely sad the L.I.E. took him from this world. I saw him in Jersey at the Garden State Arts Center when i was yound with my mother. He was awsume. What a mood he created.

  • I am the mid-night watchman down at Millers tool and dyes. I Watch the metal rusting, I watch the time go bye. Does anyone from Watertown New York know if this place still exist? just curious!! One of the Greatest singer song writers who ever lived. It is ashame we had him for such a short time. He made an indelible impression on me. His music help turn my life around, and I will be eternaly greatful for that. Thank you Mr. Harry Chapin for everything...

  • millers tool is gone now , replaced by a tree trimming place. But the diner he wrote the story about is there. Lies by a railroad track. Great coffee

  • Thank you very much for that information. If your from Watertown New York, hope you were not offended by his remark. I remember watertown NY-I did my cold weather training there while in the Navy. The place was called Fort Drum. It was an Army post. just wondering if its still there...

  • I remember listening to his stories album, and this song came up, and I just could'nt stop listening. I must of played it 1000xs. It touched me so much. You see- I at one time in my life was shallow, and into good looks, and beautiful people. Well, this song put things into perspective. It may me realized theres more to a person then ones looks. I was taken aback by the images in my head while listening to this haunting and beautiful song.cont.

  • I then put myself in the place of the little night watchmen. And then it hit me- "I was finally in a Better Place". Thank you Harry for helping me to find that place it made me a better person. And I will be forever in your debt. God Bless and keep you my friend..

  • I have enjoyed Harry Cahpin since I was 14 years old . When ever I hear this song I just sit and dream. the lyrics are amazing this man can belt out,

  • Harry would be horrified at the state of world today. Maybe if we just close our eyes tonite and imagine Him as President. Spreading peace and love across the globe. I can here now, saying...Turn in your guns or face jail. Suffering in Africa must end. OK Americans would never elect someone like Harry. I can here Bush now, saying... we got a fabulous military. Yee hah. G.I.George !!!

  • We don't need another preident or another party. we need another way to find solutions. America's New Way Forward- The Solution Revolution, in honor of my hero Harry Chapin!

  • Harry would vote for Ron Paul!

  • Sorry, no. Harry wasn't one to wait for the free market to feed the hungry when we could do it right now.

  • Amazingly gifted singer/songwriter.I grew up on his music and i still love it ,timeless stories.Wonderful!!

  • This is so so beautiful story. Harry had a way with words that nobody else has had. The times that this song has moved me have been many and will be another many. Harry Chapin was a fine man with a big genuine heart.

  • This song reminds me of my dad. It is his favorite song. He crys every time at the end, it makes me cry. It gives me chills.

  • In 1976 my father sat with a guy that was his boss. This "Boss" showed me a "d" chord, that boss was Harry Chapin and I wish I could have known him. My father knew him but I never did, I only know stories, and that seems fitting for Harry Chapin...Stories.

  • I saw Harry perform at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I was 21. I was in line to shake his hand after the concert. He made eye contact with me and pulled me in for a quick kiss! What a memory! Thanks Harry!

  • I saw Harry perform at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I was 21. I was in line to shake his hand after the concert. He made eye contact with me and pulled me in for a quick kiss! What a memory! Thanks Harry!

  • i remember back in the early 70s there were great singer song writers, such as: Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Carol King, joni mitchell, Elton John, and of course the late Great Harry Chapin. This prticular song moved me more than the other more commercially successful songs. It brought tears to my eyes, and gave me a very heavy heart, because in my youth i made fun of obese people.

  • So many can relate, great song and great song writer, thanks for sharing!

  • I used to have this cut on audio. Do you have his Circle from the same album? Better adaptation than what I've seen on YouTube.

  • this song plays straight to my heart, like most all of Harry's songs did.....

  • I grew up on his music, and it still touches my heart to this day. God I miss him..and we need more music like this these days, instead of all we have..his music might inspire and console some people. He was a master lyricist..and the best story teller..rock on in peace Harry, we miss you.

  • WOW

  • i am so blessed my mother introduced me to his music when i was a young boy, she met Harry at prospect park in brooklyn ny at a free concert which he did plenty of them, a great man, a great story teller! an angel in heven, we miss you Harry

  • This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I was lucky enough to see Harry in concert at the University of Illinois in 1977.

  • I am a U of I grad (1975) and saw him in the Assembly Hall about 74/75 (and more than a dozen times after that). What a show!! He could talk to an audience of 30,000 like he was talking to you personally.

  • The concert I saw was at that old, domed "auditorium" at the end of the quad. I was in the third row!

  • I grew up with the Chapins...played with Steve...and i was in bands with his guitar player and drummer. When he came home from ca after making films...we all knew he was the one. Few touched our souls with their words. Harry is and was the closest to touching who we are...thanks for posting and remembering.

  • I can't thnk enough for posting this. God Bless You!

  • I'm 15 years old... I like Rock... I deal with RAP...

  • Big John Wallace still tours with the Chapin Family when they do Harry Chapin Tribute concerts

  • I am so glad you have all these videos of Harry. I saw him in Birmingham in 1974 and he was fantastic! Does anybody know whatever happened to Big John Wallace after Harry's passing? And while I am glad you have these videos, I wish you hadn't disabled the embedding feature. I would love to have one of your videos on my Myspace page to show the young kids what they missed! Thanks so much.

  • Don't talk about god on the net ok? sheesh

  • i really hope your kidding

  • Another fantastic song! Sammy he did that for every concert he gave and stayed until everyone was gone. He was a really remarkable man and certainly had a unique talent. Quinncy, Harry died on the Long Island Expressway July, 1981. If I remember correctly - and don't bet on that - there is specualation that he suffered a heart attack and lost control of his VW and hit a tanker truck that exploded - which is why they can't confirm the heart attack. He sure made a big impression on me!

  • one of the best singers of all time.. and always will be.. R.I.P, i hope you know your not forgottn, your music will always live on harry!

  • I saw Harry in Knoxville TN on March 14 1980. I sat in the front row of the balcony. At the end of the concert he jumped off stage and ran down the center isle to meet people in the lobby. So I left my date sitting in her seat and took off. I was the first person to meet him. He shook my hand and said "Thanks for coming, man". Like an idiot I couldn't think of a thing to say. I could only stick out my ticket stub. Well he signed it and I have it to this day in a plastic holder. GREAT memory.

  • sammy, that's a freakin' awesome story. i would have left my date too. bummer i'll never get the same chance.

  • Saw him in Cincinnati back in the 70's..One of the greatest story tellers of my time. Harry....Keep the Change....Miss you...but your music lives on in my heart.
