i remember having a video tape called soccer85 it had lineker(everton) and mabbut(spurs) but only had one evertton game on it (2-3 defeat to the redshite in sept of that season)
a wet night at the end of the game. That is quality especially as it appears to pick up pace as it travels. He's knocking around the coaching staff somewhere in the lower leagues in England I think.
@razer4660 football 25 years ago wasnt like football now, sunbeam. It was in the doldrums... away fans were basically treated as animals (possibility of I.D. cards and electric fences). However, I for one would rather watch football then, than the sterile environment now.
@pdcordell your comment means nothing to the comment i made. westham were going for the title and should have had thousands at forest that night. a few weeks later westham had 8,000 at west brom alot more than at this game.
@razer4660 you just dunno mate, could of been midweek and people didn't have a lot of money then (weren't there a recession in the 80's?) or forest could of given them a low allocation. can't tell from just looking from a video/attendance records.
@UnionOfJack I WENT FOREST A FEW WEEKS AFTER WAS CHEAP TO GET IN £3 TERRACE £4,40 SEATS AND YOU GOT ALL THE EMPTY TERRACING IF YOU COULD FILL IT. WITH WEST HAM GOING FOR THEIR FIRST LEAGUE TITLE SHOULD HAVE HAD ALOT MORE THAT NIGHT FOREST ONLY 1HOUR 30 MINS FRON LONDON ON A TRAIN.
you can't say 'SHOULD OF HAD A LOT MORE' when you have no clue what went on can you?
even if it was £4.40, that was alot of money then ffs, like for example man united only bought around 1,500 to upton park this year. i'm sorry BUT I VERY MUCH DOUBT FOREST SELL OUT EVERY SINGLE AWAY ALLOCATION THANK YOU VERY MUCH. oh, and forest is 2 and a half hours away mate.
@UnionOfJack your talking shit i started work on £100 pound a week a few months after. from st pancras the midlands was roughly 1 hour 30 mins manchester liverpool was roughly 3 hours from euston at the time. i went forest around the same time and considering west ham were going for the title should have had more. fans found money to travel to europe so why not london to nottingham. in 87 i couldnt spend £100 a week and i was going all over the country for football total cost cost £20 if that
@UnionOfJack also man utd had 3,000 at west ham when they won 4 2 earlier in the season the same as chelsea arsenal tottenham etc. from the crn flag to past the goal is 3,000, wigan blackburn etc have 1,500 seats when dont go up as far as the goal man utd didnt do that had 3,000. you really dont know alot do you
@razer4660 i do pal, i was there. they didn't bring 3,000 because liverpool took that many and went along almost double what west ham did.
i'll say it again, not every club's fans sell out every away allocation, they just don't. end of. this is a stupid argument and you're being very petty about it.
@UnionOfJack its you that argued my original point. in my opinion for such a big game west ham in 1986 should have had far more at forest than they did. cost didnt come into it. no one was priced out in them days unlike now. other teams would have had alot more at forest that night. the empty sections next to west ham were in use if alot more away fans turned up. see a few teams fill all of the away section back then. man utd had 3,000 the 4 2 game i see it on tv same as chelsea spurs etc
@UnionOfJack to be fair just looked at man utd 4 2 game man utd had some tickets cut due to always standing but thats alot more than 1,500 going up to the goal. when teams have 3,000 go just past the goal so liverpool didnt have double what man utd had, man utd got 2,500 at west ham 1,500 you dont go that far when say wigan blackburn play at upton park. anyway now west ham in the championship poss could give away teams whole lower tier dont see west ham selling out do you
@razer4660 no, we won't give away that whole lower tier because:
a) that's the part of the ground that is easily filled
b) most teams in the championship couldn't half fill that lower.
i don't see us selling out, but i see us getting a very respectable attendance, average of around 30,000, it will most likely be higher than forest's. we'll sell out against millwall, leeds, forest, cardiff, palace, leicester and all the other biggish clubs.
The best free kick i have ever seen, i remember watching this game on the BBC ,awesome power thanks for posting this , a true classic free kick cheers from an Aston Villa and Celtic fc supporter
Great goal johnny and you were a great player in a great footballing team, always 2 /3 players short of winning something but hey fantastic on our day! Thanx johnny you will always be a red! :0)
Can't blame the keeper here. Even slow motion I couldn't see the ball!! What a stunning strike. I'm of the old school. Sure, those nice bendy curly free kicks are pretty. But I prefer the rockets. Lorimer, Charlton, Metgod . They rock!
Mettie82 I saw your dad in action. Unfortunately not this game (gutted!). He was a great player for us and anyone on this thread who slags him off is an idiot. In the 33 years I've followed Forest this goal is still in my top 3 Forest goals ever.
Yes, that's me (the ball boy) in front of the Bonus Print advertising board. I remember this like it was yesterday ! Johnny, Johnny, Johnny !! - Forest Legend.
I don't know who the Forest player was who stood in the West Ham wall, then left a gap in it as Metgod was about to shoot. (Forest fans will no doubt tell me!)
It's the oldest trick in the book and West Ham were naive to allow it. But I can't quite see from the video if the ball went through that gap, and I suppose anyone who had got in the way of the ball would still have a headache today.
By the way, Metgod junior - did your Dad ever show you how to shoot like that?

Why don't you show the return leg at the Boleyn? This will show what we did to Forest. Not for the feint hearted. Your keeper must have been thinking about self preservation!
I was at Forest and saw the Metgod goal from a position in the far stand shown in theTV picture. I got the impression that Parkes took his hand out of the way by self-preservation instinct. If his hand had been fully behind it, it stood a good chance of being crushed against the crossbar.
I have never seen so much power in a shot - as someone said, this was with a heavier ball than they use now, and it was still rising as it hit the net.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Self preservation? Phil was a great keeper and was 38 at this time, this explains why he was slow to the ball! Remember Seaman at 38? He played in this West Ham team who, only for loses against Chelsea and Forest, would have won the league. He must have been doing something right! Also, Liverpool-eventual champions-won their last 16 games. Don't judge West ham considering your lowly position.
"as someone said, this was with a heavier ball than they use now, and it was still rising as it hit the net."
This, the ball being heavier, is a myth. Maybe twenty years earlier, again, a ball might soak up a bit of moisture during play but not at the time this clip was taken...
Happy memories.I remember Johnny giving an interview about that goal - he said he hit it right in the centre of the "sweet spot" and it felt as light as a feather.. didnt he score anotehr one from an even longer distance against Man U?
I was there that night and still remember that thunderbolt bending Phil Parkes' hands! That goal won the game for Forest (I think) and dealt a massive blow to the Hamers league title hopes. Got home to London about 3 a.m.thanks to the local old bill searching the train outside Nottingham....anyway take nothing away from Johnny it was a screamer and one I still have bitterswet memories of....thanks for posting.
An awesome strike, but a goalie of Phil Parkes' calibre really should have pushed that over the bar - if you watch it carefully it went straight through his hands, don't suppose he was expecting something like that mind!
The thud is the sound of his boot hitting the ball: sound travels slower than light, wally. There was no deflection, it rises into the net because it was clogged with the strength of a horse.
