IIRC this is A/C 238 or so..a "B" model....I worked on it at the plant in WPB FLin late '86 or early '87...my stamp is on one of inside panels in the 'baggage' compartment.
Turbine powered helos have whats called a turboshaft eng. I has a takeoff shaft that provides power to the rotor system. via a transmission. It in turn powers the main rotor via an vertical shaft and the tail rotor via the tail rotor shaft. I know this for a fact as I,m a frmr. U.S.C.G. AD3 Sikorski HH52a Flt. Mech./SARcrewman.1&1/2 years HU16e Grumman Albatross followed by 4 years on helos. 4 rescues(Winged S,s from Sikorski).
Do Sikorskys spin their tails faster than most? As it comes up to speed to taxi, it sounds more like a turboprop than a helicopter. Sounds fast before it even starts moving. I love it!
The tail rotor on the S-76 is giagantic, that might explain some of the noise. Plus as they taxi away it requires a lot of force from the tail rotor to turn the aircraft on the ground.
@jmaugham < Helos turn on the ground by actually STEERING the front wheel not by tail rotor. Look close and you can see the front steering in THIS VIDEO. That Sikorsky is a big bird with a lot of power and her main rotor blades have a substantial chord thus requiring a large diameter tail rotor to produce the required anti-torque effect.
@bymorningslight i think it is to do with the angle of attack of the spinning blade.
high angle of attack equals a slapping noise, obviously at very high rpm, so instead of a slap you get 100 every slaps a second. like blowing against the egde of a sheet of paper. i dont know the exact speed of sikorsky chopper tail rotors but all helicopters must have the same ratio of force to counteract the main rotor torque. however if the tail rotors are bigger than others thier rpm can be slower.
Very nice sound (a bit typical Sikorsky) and a very good clip-quality. Is it possible for you to give us some more clips of the s-76-class, perhaps a landing heli with slow stopping engine?
Opppps, someone skipped a step on the start-up ck-list.
Hint, before you even engage the starter one must fire up the strobe/ anti-collision lights...to warn all that you're fixing to fire her up. oh well maybe next time.
Plus the white strobes are run off the DC primary bus of the applicable engine. The red anti collision is off the essential bus powered by the batt... so during start up, until the engine either engine reaches self accelerating speed, all yer gonna have is the red anti coll light...
Nice, my friend drive Bell 230. Now my friend want get new one Bell 430 but sad it was out of production. So He end want sikorsky S-76. I will missed good Bell 230.
@jmaugham - It is also used to transport cardiac patient's to cardiac specialty centers and CVA/Neuro (stroke) patient's to neuro specialty centers. Scene flights, most of which are trauma's, are indeed a large part of what aeromedical in NJ does. Southstar, based out of Virtua/Voorhees, covers southern NJ, while Northstar, based further north, covers northern NJ. There are several other ships throughout the state, Medevac 5 out of Hammonton, Pennstar, etc. Summers do see increases in trauma.
I see (and really HEAR) this bird almost every day at work - I work at Cooper in ICU step down on the 10th floor - right beneath the heliport. Sometimes we have 3-4 alerts a shift, and more in the summer. Nothing like the sounds of a Sikorsky, always music to my ears!

at 107%Nr since the "B" models operate 7% higher than the A's

i don't get ur comment in the description of the video - "more people nearly killing themselves in the summer". What does that mean?
alaskacity 3 years ago
The helicopter is used to transport injured patients to the trauma hospital. Summertime sees a lot more trauma type accidents.
Motorcycles, drunk driving car accidents, boating accidents and drowning, etc...
