@clouds882 you compare them to a music box? ummm, you don't think the box sounded kind of tinny and flat compared to actual musicians? odd comparison to the greats. just sayin'.
I think I Lindley with David Grisman , Jerry Garcia, and Tony Rice...not altogether. I'm pretty sure he does a pretty mean bluegrass...or jazz bluegrass. I've loved him for years. As mentioned somewhere else, my memory is not the greatest but feel sure I have him on some of my bluegrass and Grisman stuff. He is fantastic, even if that wasn't him.
I grew up in LA in the late 60s and saw Ry around as well as Lindley when he was in Kaleidescope. I thought I was pretty familiar with both of their work. This blew me away Does anyone know where and when this concert took place? I'd give an awful lot to play a hundredth as well as either of them.
@waterfordrs22 Both are absolutely incredible musicians. I've seen Sonny play live, but just missed a chance to see Hiatt. Not happy about that either!
for anyone who does know know what Sídh Beag agus Sídh Mór means, its native Irish (gaelic) for Small hill and big hill (the type of hill is one which fairies live under)..... RANDOM INFO
Never got to see Cooder but FINALLY saw Lindley with John Hiatt in a small theater in Dallas few years ago. The were both fantastic as I knew they would be. Lindley played on a few tunes in the 80s with Hiatt I'm sure. If I replay Slow Turning in my mind it has the Lindley signature on it but I may be wrong. At any rate I think both these artsists have been underrated all these years.
Never got to see Cooder but FINALLY got to see Lindley with John Hiatt in a small theater in Dallas just few years ago. The were both just fantastic as I knew they would be.
@deblovesbluegrass : It's a tune usually titled Si Bheag Si Mhor by Irish composer Turlough O'Carolan. There are other great versions by William Coulter and Planxty.
If you like Cooder and Lindley together (heaven, as far as I'm concerned!) you might want to check out a 1995 album called "Cooder-Lindley Family: Live at the Vienna Opera House." There are tracks on there that are so ... there are no words to adequately describe the wonderfulness :-)
@taildragger53: Mothra was mistaken and admittedly underestimated your obvious breadth of musical knowledge, one that is deeper than that of Mothra. Mothra took your musicological advice and now seeks forgiveness. A humbled Mothra thanks you and wishes peace as always.
There aren't many real, boundary breaking, musicians like Cooder or Lindley. To play World Music, whether Celtic, Indian or Bahamanian, requires a different level of consciousness & acceptance. Zoot Horn Rollo (Bill Harkleroad) & Ian A. Anderson are similar. Thankfully Derek Trucks has carried the torch also.
Zoot's interesting but I'm not sure I see a connection to World Music. I can't find much of him on Ytube except his work with Beefheart. Any recommendations ?
@JoeGancher There are some superb CD compilations around like 'Slide Crazy' which highlight Harkleroad's playing.
other great players are Harry Manx. & Kevin Breit. World Music is really a misnomer to me because ALL music is Worldly.(e.g. Blues/Jazz has African roots but isn't regarded as World Music)
@JoeGancher Meant to add, if you check out Harkleroad's variety of instruments he plays some fairly exotic ones apart from his usual psychedelic 'Troutmask' Telecaster . Influenced Henry Kaiser alot.
@taildragger53 : Mothra appreciates your gorgeous comment. But Mothra wonders: do you mean Ian Anderson from Jerthro Tull? If so, Mothra asks: compared to Lindley and Cooder? Are ya sure? Perhaps Mothra is mistaken. Anyway, peace to you and yours..!
@1mothra Ian . A. Anderson is not to be confused with the Tull leader. This is why Ian placed the intial "A" into his name. He's a British 'World Music' musician, mag editor & radio broadcaster. Usually noted for his work with Mike Cooper during the 1960s-1970s. Listen out for his version of Blind Willie Johnsons "Dark Is The Night". (the CD " Slide Crazy")
This is quite exceptional...you might want to listen to Ry's live CD jam with an Indian Sitar player...Mind-numbing how they play riffs back and forth
Was this ditty originally by the blind Irish harpist O'Carolan?. I am familiar with the basic tune which I play on a low D tin whistle. I am surprised to see Ry Cooder's playing it. I always think of him with blues slide guitar but the man seems to put his hands to anything! Great playing.
I heard The Chieftains play this on an old album of theirs. This here version is very nice. I saw these two in concert must have been some time in the early or mid-1990s at London's Royal Festival Hall and they were very good.
Lindley & Cooder ... individually ... the best together ... mot so good ... for this tune see P.Bensusan version ... love them all ... but individually ..yes .
sucks man, eh?....they were and still are madly underappreciated or unkown among the average music lister but talk to any musician who knows what's up and they'll tell u how great those two are!....i just saw Lindley in Toronto...the man's a genius
Yeah it does, lol, and most so called educated guitarists have no idea that Ry arguably has the longest reume of any guitarist in history. The guys that have heard of him are only familiar with his work in the Crossroads movie soundtrack. They just don't know what they are missing, two of my all time favorite slide musicians that never get old,ha,ha.
Ahh man, ment to ask you what stuff he played when you saw him..Such a great show/stand up act, David puts on.I swear if he wasnt a musician he would have been a great stand up commic, lol.I saw him once I think in late 90s and he had the place in stitches between songs.Absolutely love Lindely.
The show was awsome and you're absolutely right, he has some of the dryest humor around.....as for what he played, to be honest i can't really remember the specific songs.....i can tell you that he did not play any El Rayo X or Twango Bango Deluxe material....it was more world/blues....he played strictly lap steel guitars (oud, Weisenborn, Bizouki etc)...he probably switched between 6 "guitars" that night, half of them using a slide...he covered the Dylan tune Well Well Well - fav of the night
I wouldn't say they are either unknown or underappreciated...I know their music well and I totally appreciate them both.!..I will go to see David next year at the Royal Conservatory in TO....looking forward to it...it will be packed.
@Spartreeman I second that. I've known of Ry Cooder for years, but only just learned about David Lindley. Wonderful. And I keep going back to listen to Catfood Sandwiches every time I think of the Simpson-Bowles commission.

" Tabhair Dom Do Lamb ' is a composition of the blind Co. Derry harper, Róry ( Dall ) Ó Catháin, 1550 - 1650 or thereabouts.
Ó Catháin also composed what we now know as Danny Boy or the Derry Air. He called it Aisling an Óighfear ( lament of the young man ) in response to his family being ousted from their land during the Plantation of Ulster. He finally settled in Scotland. He was of noble birth. It's a beautiful air. You can hear it on Kathleen Loughnane's ' Harping On ' cd, 2002
