@luisme719 English is different from French, Spanish and Latin although modern English uses Roman letters and some vocabs have similar spelling as Spanish and French. Actually, English is a Germanic Language, same class as Dutch, German and Northern European languages...etc.

In addition, most english vocabularies are latin-based. The best English writers all share certain degrees and understanding of the Latin language. It's for supplementary purpose. That's why I said they are somewhat the same type.

I would say the same thing for Chinese and Japanese although the two languages have very different structure.

@luisme719 Ok. I just let you know that you were wrong according to linguistic definition. I took linguistic class. I can show you one more example. Yiddish and English are in the same class although Yiddish uses Hebrew like letters instead of Roman letters. Its grammar and vocabs are pretty similar to Germanic languages. Yiddish is a Germanic language. Chinese and Japanese are not in the same class. Japanese is not belong to any class while Chinese is a Sino-Tibetan language.

I took an economics class. What you just said is not efficient according to the principle of economics because the demand of your knowledge is low (nobody really cares) while understanding it is costly (time-wasted). For example, it would be a bad idea for a Ph.D in Anthropology to talk about fossil record with a Christian who had only read one book called the Holy Bible in his life. That would make the Anthropologist equally as dumb as the Christian because he had made a bad decision.

How about Cantonese. ?? I find learning Mandarin is easy but Cantonese with its all 6 rather than just 4 tones is quite difficult. Kudos to her if she does not overlook this beautiful and important dialecct while she studies there. I find Japanese is easy to pick up. But how good one can become depends on a lot of time. French and Latino languages are from the same root so it is not hard to pick up. Arabic is very diffuicult so kudos to her on that one. Lucky girl such rich background.

@jtt426 it is indeed related to church-work, but that's not the only goal of teaching Latin. Latin is the base of English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Italian etc. It's just an addition and it helped me to speak many languages fluently, since you understand the method of using the words. And of course, when studying engineering or law many latin terms come back, it's just more convenient to know the origin of the word. I had it for 6 years and I have no regrets at all!
