Hmmm obviously a sunday morning & feeling the effects from the previous night lol like he has to prove himself! The man is a god, us drummers just don't do mornings. Too loud man :-)
Refreshing to hear a great drummer playing with his sticks instead of his ego. From the Very Admirable John Bonham School of Less is Better. Jim Keltner is another guy who does this sort of thing brilliantly.
do you remember july 1976 at stratford place dave lol...you did the drums on our cover of boys cry ...eden kane cover,,buggers left it in the can after a disagreement with ed welch and george mcmanus..end of our short polydor career lol
I'll second DM being a thoroughly nice guy, always willing to help out other players and dedicated to educate and teach.
IMHO he is the total opposite of most 'drum-clinic' type players who are all speed, aggression, noodling, speed and more speed. There is a good reason why this guy has played for so many great musicians - his sound, feel and control are absolutely impeccable. Forget Thomas Lang & the rest - I just wish I could play the very simplest 4/4 beat as perfectly as this guy can.
Not only one of the greatest drummers ever, but a gentleman. Dave doesn't "do" solos. I have the pleasure of calling him my friend & get to see him play out often.
Go to mattacks.com - he has recorded on more records than just about any living drummer. Paul McCartney, Elton John, Jethro Tull, XTC, Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson & so so so much more.
every solo i have watched from drumhead sucks. these are completely terrible solos and very bad representations of the players skills. I know they are better than this...
@jjdrummer108 It doesnt have to be mindless beating as fast as one can like joey or travis or ridiculous speed and gospel chops like royster jr. to be a good solo. You need to learn a bit about groove and touch young one. You'd probably realise how decent this was if you tried to learn and play this exact solo. Sure, you may be able to hit the same drums, but would it sound the same? My guess is that you probably wouldn't know the difference so i may just be wasting my words.
@cragnog lol first off im not young and joey and travis suck? How dare you even try and imply Tony Royster jr isn't one of the best progressive drummers of our time. Second this solo is lame as fuck completely, its fucking rudiments played really slow. Speed doesn't mean everything but seriously this solo is nothing special and has lame ass grove in it. Go watch an Aaron Spears, Jerome Flood, or a Tony Royster jr. solo. Those have grove, dynamics, and speed. Fucking stupid internet faggot.
@jjdrummer108 I cant believe i just called an 'internet' faggot on the internet. You must be the type trolls feed on because i hardly had to say any douche like things to set you off. I wasn't actually trying to call you a child by saying 'young one', but your reaction does sway me in that direction.
Anyways, I didnt say joey and travis suck. So NO to that question of yours. And of course tony is one of my all time favourites and biggest influences. I just open my mind to other types of drumming
@jjdrummer108 (ran outta space, make sure you read this part second)
Like many people do, you missed the point. Dont feel bad about that though, its common on the internet. This is a nice solo played with a nice touch, but you didn't appreciate that, so you had to bitch about it. I then replied to you in defence of this vid. And what do you do? You went crazy, thinking that i was dissing some great drummers (and Travis). Open your mind up. There is more to drumming than wat u think.
@jjdrummer108 thanks for missing my point completely. All i have to do is say a drummers name and you think im dissing them. I was right to say that i was wasting my words, cause it seems like you haven't read a thing i wrote.
Look, Tony and Joey are two of the biggest influences in my drumming. Dave doesn't come close to them on my list, but i know how to keep an open fucking mind. You know, I tried not to call u names, but doesn't seem like u could show the same restraint could ya?
Wonderful Sound & drumming -

@jjdrummer108 Are you kidding? This solo is understated for sure but it's a decent and tasteful solo from an excellent drummer!
