hey! I just realized something... I use to have this same problem when I lived in the states... I couldn't get an official state ID, so I couldn't prove I was old enough to get in. What I thought about just now is that they do accept passports. People who travel to the states from Mexico use their passport as ID. Any Mexican consulate in the states can give you a Mexican passport. I got my passport before moving to Mexico, and it's still valid until 2014. They should accept it at clubs, etc.
@paolaura08 just go to your consulate... Mexican, Guatemalan, etc. I'm not sure about other consulates, but the Mexican ones require your birth certificate and some other docs to get a VALID passport... of course you can't use it to leave the country and come back... but it solves the ID for partying problem...
OMG, this happens to me.... all the time. Really sucks, main reason why I usually don't go out with people i dont know so well beause I fear of my ID being rejected and having to deal with the embarrassment.
@r2romix How does a passport make it any easier? Isn't it awkard to have to pull out a passport from a different country? Besides no one goes out carrying passports, almost everyone has a state a ID usually a license. I'm just wondering b/c I'm undocumented and have experienced embarassing situations like these....its mortifying! Lol
@belindalucero it does make it easier. You might feel awkward, but don't be ashamed. If I ever go back to the states to visit, I'll have my passport to prove my age. I obviously won't be able to get a state ID since I was never legal, but I'm not ashamed of it anymore. Visitors from other countries always carry their passports. If anyone gives you dirty looks, screw 'em... you're getting in!
@paolaura08 I don't think you really understand the situation. It is not the same visiting the US and actually living here. I am NOT ashamed of being undocumented. I don't care what the bouncers think of me, or about the people around that might be watching. The embarrasement comes when your friends/classmates/co-workers etc. are WITH YOU while the bouncer rejects your ID. If you don't have a state ID such as license, they will start asking questions like ...(continued on next post)
@belindalucero I do understand, because up until May I was in the same exact situation and I too was ambarassed when I went out with friends and coworkers and had an expired ID rejected [before 2007, in NC one could get an ID without documentation]. What I am saying is, that if you really want to get in, use a passport. If you don't want to do it because you are worried about what "friends" would think, then you aren't going to go at all... True friends shouldn't judge.
@belindalucero "Why don't you drive? Why do you have to use a passport? Don't you have an ID? For some people these things are so basic that they don't seem to understand how it could be possible for someone not to have a simple ID. Also, alot of people assume that b/c you grew up in this country, you most likely a US citizen. They don't understand that there are actually people thathave lived here for decades as undocumented. When they start questioning you, its VERY difficult to...(continued)
@belindalucero answer b/c you can't explain your situation to them especially if they are not very close friends. It creates EXTREMELY uncomfortable situations.
@belindalucero well I definitely understand where you are coming from because it is extremely uncomfortable when people start asking those questions. I would always say that I like to walk [even now that I can get a license in MX, I still prefer to walk and take the bus]. I'd say that I couldn't afford a car, etc. As far as ID and other, the topic was never brought up.
@paolaura08 Yup! That is exactly what most of us do, try to invent a whole bunch of excuses! to explain why you can't do so many of the things that they do. Have you watched Undocumented and Akward Episode 3? That episode does a really good job at showing how uncomfortable it is when people start questioning you :)
@belindalucero As long as your friends know the deal and don't judge you, F the rest of the people. You don't have to answer any questions if you don't want to. or make it up... but the passport works... it gets checked [your date of birth] and you walk in. If your coworker asks, "I forgot my ID at home and had the passport in the glove compartment." If they still don't believe you... change the subject... ??
@belindalucero my main point... you've done nothing wrong and have nothing to be ambarassed about. Especially if you were brought to the US as a child, it wasn't your choice. Before I left the states, I just answered with the truth-- I stopped caring. "yeah, I'm undocumented. been here since I was 3. why? does that bother you?"
@paolaura08 I an not ashamed of being undocumented, but sometimes you just simply can't answer those questions with the truth. These things are delicate, and there are alot of legal things that you can't talk about especially if your papers are in progress. These sort of things require a lot of discretion, sometimes it could even be dangerous to expose yourself like that to people. So if I don't disclose my status is bc of my SAFETY not bc I'm embarrased.
@belindalucero oh I c, ur afraid some1 can try to get you deported. well if that is the case I can def understand... Another thing tho, [supposedly] if your papers are in progress, it is already known that u are in the country [immigration is already aware]... so I don't really think other people knowing will harm the process... I would think that if they haven't deported u yet, and u are already accepted... but I wouldn't know that for sure... this is just what I was told.
@belindalucero well you're right, they assume u are a citizen and know u grew up there but what I am suggesting is for people to stop being ambarassed, because they've done nothing wrong. Lie if u want, or tell them straight out the truth. If they judge u for it, they are not worth ur time. Most ppl I have told asked more and more questions, because they didn't understand, but they did not judge... they were just curious. the ones that did jude didn't bother me. Showed me how ignorant they were.
@paolaura08 and I hope you don't think I was hostile with them about it either. I just told them upfront. Being undocumented is a crime, well "I've been a criminal since I was 3 years old." it sounds ridiculous, and it proved to that person that it was not my fault... I had no choice in where I grew up.
@belindalucero if you are worried about what friends, coworkers etc will think, that would mean you are ambarassed/ashamed. I wasn't ambarassed when it happened to me because my friends knew the situation and true friend don't judge. We simply went to other places until they accepted my ID. If you really want to get in, even though you are not a "visitor," try the passport, there is no reason why it should be rejected.
@paolaura08 You talk about "true friends". What about the moments when you go out with people that are not exactly close? You can't explain your situation to them!
@belindalucero well, to be honest I didn't like answering questions if they weren't close. I'm like that to this day with everything. If you don't know me well, you don't need to know where I work, how much I make, whether I can vote or not... I guess what I'm saying is, you don't have to answer them if you don't want to. Why do you have to explain yourself to them?? if it makes you uncomfortable, tell them it's none of their business... it's personal.
@paolaura08 That is not really practical, Sometimes those questions come up casually when you are among a group of people just talking, there is no need to be hostile to them. Like I said before, sometimes if they know you grew up in the US, they assume you have become a citizen by now. They don't realize that you could have lived here all your life as undocumented!
@belindalucero I've had those uncomforable moments trying to get into a bar with "friends" that didn't know my situation... they started asking questions "why don't you just renew your ID?" I'd make up excuses but after that first time it happened, I either avoided the situation [going to clubs] or quit answering questions. "bc I haven't felt like it, that's why!"
@belindalucero besides, you gotta stop thinking about "almost everyone," you are not almost everyone. Almost everyone has a ssn and was born in the states / naturalized. Dreamers should stop being ashamed. If they're is a way around it [passport], then try it. That is, if you want to get in with your friends. If you're too ashamed to pull out your passport, then you don't really want to get in = problem solved. It's not the bouncer's business how long you lived there, etc... just that ur over 21
Ha! Thanks for doing these. This happens so often and not just at clubs. I hope you all make more, god knows there's a lot of content available. I'm sharing this with my friends.
Hahahahaha I have been deny entry to night clubs just like this! What I tell em is really you have secrets of national security in there! What you have is Victoria secrets! And I wanna get to know em! Hahahahaha it's worked!
