i have to admit the storyline was boring compared to other games. i know many zelda fans, so i've heard, ranted a lot on twilight princess. but i think twilight princess was way better than skyward sword. especially in terms of character and story. not that i didn't like skyward sword at all. but like dsp said, many parts of the game were just too boring to tolerate. compare to twilight princess where it was mysteriously fun.
Ocarina Of Time and Wind Waker had fast travel. In OoT you played color coated songs on your ocarina that would warp you to a location close to one of the 5 temples, plus the temple of time. In Wind Waker if you encountered a tornado on the seas while you had a bow you could shot some fucking sky gremlin off a nimbus and learn a warp song for your metronome baton thingy; this would warp you to around 5 places around the world map as well.
I think Phil is kind of remembering Link to the Past in a lot better light then it actually is. Of course its a great game, but there are tons of people who agree that there are far better Zelda games then A Link to the Past. Lets face it, the game is extremely old. Does that make it bad? No. But newer Zelda games HAVE improved a lot on the basic formula of that game and made it better. I'm sure if Phil played LTTP again he wouldn't like it as much as he used to. But, its still his opinion.

not to be an ass but you can fast travel in older zelda games for example in ocarina of time you learn the songs to fast travel you to the certain locations. In majoras mask you activate the owl statues and get the song to to fast travel. In wind waker you get the power of tornadoes to teleport you any where on the sea. In twilight princess you get midna teleport you to where the portals are. So you see they always have a fast travel option in older zelda. Its a shame they did not do it in SWS
@DSPGaming I gave this game a 10/10 and I would be furious with anyone who gave it a score less than an eight. However, I love your reviews because you do make very good points and even though you gave it an 8.25, I'm not mad because you address every point and score the games completely fairly. If IGN gave the game an 8.25, I'd be angry because they only have five minute reviews and it seems like they judge it unfairly. You address everything and it is a very informative review.
The backtracking isn't even that bad :l It's actually justified when you travel to an area that was completely under your nose and find some treasure.
The flying isn't that bad either. You fly for like 30 seconds to a minute to reach your destination, a little bit more to find hidden treasure and areas. (It's no where near as bad as WW)
I agree about the camera angles. It did take me back to the camera days of Ocarina of Time. And the fact that running was still really sharp in this game where in other games made it a lot smoother.
You have the PS3 Uncharted syndrome where you get tonnes of new areas that you just see for like 10 minutes but you can't interact with or go back to, its almost like the new MI4 movie; Lots of glitter - no substance.
This game i really liked. It was the first game that used motion controls in the core gameplay. I just finished it today and I have to say the story wasinteresting, even for a Zelda game it wasnt always the generic damsel in distress story despite some moments, i do think the villan was creepy and annoying though, but the combat overall was fun. But my favorite Zelda game is Twilight Princess. The traveling is much less annoying in that game. I agree with just about everything in this review.

I liked the game in the first half or so, but after I hit (spoiler)
...the Hero's Song part of the game (where you have to gather three parts of a song) and was given the damn quest to collect more shit after doing the tear trials...it got to repetitive. Fetch quests and gathering quests are okay in games if done for maybe one section of a game, but after that you want something different. The game just lacks substance. Collect fire, collect tears, collect notes to songs... etc. It gets boring.
if they added a shopping town in the older games then you still have to walk to it which is probably just as time consuming as flying i dont see the problem with having to fly sure you've probably spent 15 whole parts of the thing worth of time flying but if you were walking to the places i guarantee it would be more boring...

@aridchimp i beat it, it's fun to play. You find different kinds of islands excluding the 3 main ones. The motion controls actually adds MORE to the combat (even though you have to recalibrate here and there). The backtracking in OoT is worse.
Most of the islands in Wind Waker were pointless, though.
Motion controls did not dumb down combat. If anything it improved the combat in past 3D Zelda games, which consisted on spamming the b button for every single enemy.
It repeats two bosses three times. Oh God, the horror. It's not like they're different each time, right?

I have the game, I played and beat it, and I can tell you without a doubt that those things you listed aren't completely accurate. Traveling around on your bird is fun and doesn't ever feel likt it takes forever. The motion controls are smooth and flawless (unless you fail at the game like this guy) It's just one boss 3 times, but it gets harder. Backtracking is different each time.

There is fast travel in Zelda games. The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess both had it. That really only makes it more annoying that Skyward Sword really doesn't have any beyond picking which bird statue you want to land at.
@beeyotch23 Twilight Princess was actually a Gamecube game in the beginning. It then got ported to Twilight Princess to somewhat incorporate motion controls. Although I got what you were saying. In twilight princess you get midna teleport you to where the portals are. So you see they always have a fast travel option in older zelda. Its a shame they did not do it in SWS

The backtracking isn't even that bad :l It's actually justified when you travel to an area that was completely under your nose and find some treasure.
The flying isn't that bad either. You fly for like 30 seconds to a minute to reach your destination, a little bit more to find hidden treasure and areas. (It's no where near as bad as WW)
I agree with everything else, though.

This game i really liked. It was the first game that used motion controls in the core gameplay. I just finished it today and I have to say the story wasinteresting, even for a Zelda game it wasnt always the generic damsel in distress story despite some moments, i do think the villan was creepy and annoying though, but the combat overall was fun. But my favorite Zelda game is Twilight Princess. The traveling is much less annoying in that game. I agree with just about everything in this review.

Phil, how can you say that Skyward Sword isn't innovative. Here's a list of innovative things:
1. Motion Controls (of course)
2. New Items (They are there in the game!)
3. Upgradability of items (You say that you don't really need them and you don't, but they do help if you are playing the harder mode.)
4. Your shield breaks. (Also different shields have different weaknesses and it isn't until the end until you get a shield that doesn't break.)
5. Adventure Pouch (Adds strategy for preparing).

I liked the game in the first half or so, but after I hit (spoiler)
...the Hero's Song part of the game (where you have to gather three parts of a song) and was given the damn quest to collect more shit after doing the tear trials...it got to repetitive. Fetch quests and gathering quests are okay in games if done for maybe one section of a game, but after that you want something different. The game just lacks substance. Collect fire, collect tears, collect notes to songs... etc. It gets boring.

@aridchimp i beat it, it's fun to play. You find different kinds of islands excluding the 3 main ones. The motion controls actually adds MORE to the combat (even though you have to recalibrate here and there). The backtracking in OoT is worse.

Motion controls did not dumb down combat. If anything it improved the combat in past 3D Zelda games, which consisted on spamming the b button for every single enemy.

I have the game, I played and beat it, and I can tell you without a doubt that those things you listed aren't completely accurate. Traveling around on your bird is fun and doesn't ever feel likt it takes forever. The motion controls are smooth and flawless (unless you fail at the game like this guy) It's just one boss 3 times, but it gets harder. Backtracking is different each time.

@dragons1ay3r1 well this is my honest opinion about his whole playthrough and all the bullcrap he says he thinks the game is to blame for but no...... i tried to see if he'd at least learn from his mistakes so i continued to watch the playthrough but i still see him recycling the same damn nonsense he believes in his head that obviously isn't true and he's not using the motion controls properly for the parts he mentions having difficulty with.

@agentfire102 i had every right to say what i had to say because his whole review is pretty much rendered invalid because of his biased point of view with the motion controls and the fact that you had to fly in this game as your source of travel which is what ALL zelda games have, only difference is the variety of sources with which you use for travel obviously. besides, like i mentioned to many people.... have you bothered to review his entire playthrough of the game beforehand?
