  • There's not too many, if any, bands that give tribute to that time. I don't think that they were being disrespectful to those beneath their feet. But yeah, it is a little suspect.

  • They're already dead, you're worthless while alive imagine when you died.

  • agreed. wtf?! dancing on people's graves? great song and I know what the meaning is but man, don't do that!

  • My Grandfather "fought" at Verdun against France.

He was German, of course, but this is irrelevant.

His four sons also had to "fight" against Russia in the next war. One stepped on a land mine in Poland, one was taken

prisoner at Stalingrad, another in Czechoslovakia.

All four returned, thank goodness :)

  • Great song, great sentiment ... but I am shocked that they filmed the clip on the graves of the Great War Aussie soldiers. Bad taste ...

  • Lmao, they're literally dancing on people's graves.

  • thanks for putting this song up. another incredible entry in Oil's legacy

  • Midnight Oil is a legendary band, and I'm glad they are keeping the memories of our history alive like it should be. We will remember, we got to remember.

  • Saw the oils one night at the "War and Peace" club at Parramatta NSW very early 80's when they were doing that Powderworks thing, the stage wouldn't have been the size of Rob Hirsts drum riser much later on, lmao.

  • That These Dead Shall Not Have Died In Vain.

  • G'day all,

My Grandad would have turned 105 today, if he was still alive. He used to sing a song called "Annie". My Grandma hated him singing it due to the title being her name. Grandad has been gone for 20 years now. He fought the Japanese invasion and came home a broken man. Mentally he was fine but his body took a pounding. The one line in his simple song was, "when we are gone Annie, will they remember?"

    God Bless you Grandad.

  • saw them in new zealand, they use to hop across the ditch

  • Well it's only fair.......you gave us so many good muso's!!!

  • lol we took a rustic old van to the city to see Midnight Oil, drove for hours.

Yes, it was an epic event. It was the early 1980s. Our ears were ringing, brains pounding after the gig. Spent all night drunk in some out of town camping facility.

Arose (in more ways than one) the next day with a massive hang-over, felt like death. Crawling inside that claustrophobic van, suffocating, all for a glorious night's sleep

  • lol...rock star

  • That sounds like it was fun :)

  • If governments and thier soldiers won't stand against tyranny, despotism et al. we are doomed to live in bondage. Not all war is bad. Try to listen to this song and its message in a Taliban controlled region of Afghanistan

  • THe oils are a grate band and this is a really underated song

  • I love this band, simply under rated

  • what an amazing song and video. as an ex bristish serving soldier i cant belive anybody is arguing over a military cemetry the same respects should be paid to any countries military dead

  • The incomparable Midnight Oil. Can you imagine what thie world would be if even 1/10th of other bands used their passion the way these guys have to make the world a better place?

  • A classic!!!!!

  • Agree with pixsnapper1. I saw them at Pine Knob outside of Detroit for the Earth and Sun and Moon tour during the summer of 1993. They took jabs at Ford. Excellent concert!

  • This band should have been much bigger in the States... Great live band.

  • it would have been much bigger... if pete could dance.

  • I wish they had filmed this in a place that ANZACs had served.

  • The ANZACs fought in France.

  • Actually, ANZACs served in France in WW1. Look for "II ANZAC Corps" and "Australian Corps " on wikipedia.

  • It should have been done at an Australian war cemetary, after all this song is about Australian soldiers, not French

  • Glad to see all the thoughtful comments made here.

Perhaps Forkhead is right but this is the first view of such a cemetery that thousands of teens have seen. Is it good for them to see this?

As well, is it meant as a sacrilege? I think It is meant as a wakeup call. On Remembrance Day around the World we watch the death of 1000's in replayed footage.

  • Yes doesn't matter what cemetry. many aussies have in war but not necessary to film there. mO has so many songs! like them all. Alberto1444

  • back in the 80s the singer was actually a lawyer fighting for the rights of Aborigines, who have been treated just as horribly as the American Indians..... a true humanitarian!

  • Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Never forget!

  • Very Powerful & Moving Song

  • Just found out that this was filmed at the Verdun cemetary in France (check your history link).

Sad. They should have filmed this at either Gallipoli/Dardennelles or Tobruk.

  • The graves of Fallen Soldier's are Sacred Ground and no film, no music video, should use a cemetary of Fallen Heroes as a setting for a music video. Period.

I like MO and I like the premise of the song, but this was wrong. Whether it was Gallipoli, Verdun, Normandy, Gettysburg, The Ardennes, it was wrong.

  • I agree 100%.

  • I agree with you, despite the message of the song being not to forget those soldiers whose graves they featured. They could have done the same thing with a false set. Don't film it there. Footage maybe, but don't dance around on graves of dead soldiers. Not even (dare I say it?) nazi graves.

  • forkhead, the nazi soldier's did what they were led to think was the "right" thing to do! I am not defending that pig hitler by any mean's,but german soldier's graves should be respected as well!

  • Hell YES!

Not that I support the Nazi's, I would like to think that is obvious.

But let us not forget that NOT ALL GERMANS are/were Nazis. Many had the safety of themselves and the people they loved at stake and did what they needed to do to survive.

  • 't you get it?!!!! If they did it on a "fake set",that would cheapen their sacrifice even more!! These young men DIED,for Christ's sake!!! Bush refused to allow pictures of the returning dead from Afghanistan and Iraq.. War is killing...killing is brutal stuff! This puts the tally in concrete and horrific terms!!

  • We agree on a lot, but I think filming a video and using their gravesites as a set for a music video is disrespectful. I think the imagery is what is powerful, not the legitimate location -- they could have done it apart from the actual cemetery.

  • Sanitized war? Sounds like a whitewash to me!

  • Wow, I love the song, and video, but you really made me rethink this, you and forkhead are turning me.

  • cool song :)

  • "No more war! " and "Protect nature!" Peter is sing! I think so!

  • I will remember, else we are doomed to repeat the past.

  • This song is not about our war. Its about WWI Galipolli.

  • be care the wind get to blow, must to remember. it's a mean to understand how drive our way, another time, another rules, sames madness.

  • Midnight Oil is highly political but none of the past comments have been about Midnight Oil.

  • i dont care if bush went looking for oil, nobody can tell me the world is a better place with taliban running around free willy

  • Thanks old pop-ww1 and dad ww 2-These will not be forgotten years!! R.I.P. old soldiers...

  • Typical liberal cool-aid. Try getting your news from reputal sources rather than CNN and MSNBC. Look, we all know that President Bush seized the opportunity to get rid of Sadaam, but he did this based on information from the intelligence agencies. Unlike most of you, I served in the military and understand that diplomacy works in tandem with military strength. This is nothing new. As long as evil exists, someone has to to have the fortitude to fight against it. You can't rationalize with hate.

  • And we all know how accurate that intellegence was, don't we. I don't hate the soldiers who fought there (my cousin was one), but just the people who sent them there at the behest of the oil industry.

If it was to really get rid of a despot, why don't they invade half of Africa? Oh that's right, there's no oil there!

  • Not going to say Bush was in the wrong, but nor am I going to say he was totally in the right either.

War is an extension of politics, no more and no less. Flawed intelligence or not, there were other reasons for going in there and the only one who knows them all is Bush.

Anyone who claim that we /only/ went for the oil is looking for a reason to bash the presidency irregardless of the truth.

Was it a strong reason? yes. Was it the only reason, HELL NO.

    Stop pretending that it is.

  • You STILL believe we went in Iraq for Sadaam? Gz... what reputable source of news are you guys being fed in the military, FOX NEWS? Wake up and smell the coffee. Look, no one blames the military. So no need to help Bush justify the war. You are simply a tool that follows orders from the politicians. Your own thinking is never needed (and apparently never practiced either).

  • Hey turd, The 18 United Nations resolutions Iraq broke were the reasons to go to war, oh, and FREEDOM to 25 million Iraqi people. One less tyrant to deal with later. Or we can follow the Jimmy Carter/Obama appeasement route with Iran AND THEIR desire for the bomb.

    Read SOME history and learn.

  • are you talking about the same type of resolutions that we vote against when isreal is on the chopping block. damn, talk about humans rights violations. i agree, you should read some history like when we turned a blind eye to east timor in kissenger and fords time. and you might wanna know that carter facilitated a peace treaty with isreal , egypt and jordan in '79. see-> multinational force and observers. peace has never been broken once in 30 years. in fact that treaty cost sadat his life.

  • oil oil oil baby, no oil and nobody would give a crap what Sadass was up too... freedom my ass.... is that what you REALLY think happened? hmmm.....Nooooo

  • Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi

  • Seen all the comments below...are we all forgetting the theme of the song...Old pop was gassed on the Somme, much better than his 17year old bro who is still registered as missing from 1918...Brave aussies who knew no better than to be bullied by pollies.and spin.

  • And we won't come back 'til it is over, over there. For all the Americans, Anzacs, Indians, Africans, Canadians and others that went to Europe in either of the two wars and never came back.

To my Great Uncle Joe who died at the Bulge, December 1944 with the 106th US Infantry.

  • I learned of Midnight Oil from my dad, and to this very day I am in complete agreement with their songs. They have made a stand that should have been made long before. I applaud their skill and dedication. They have inspired me, and will continue to inspire my family for as long as we all live.

  • Amen to that....

  • great song reminds me of anzac day in sydney

  • i remember a comment about when i was getting ready to deploy to Iraq and someone made a comment that made it to my ears about get your dead out of here they are stinking up the place.... i would still die for any of you!!!

  • Sorry to hear that. I guess ignorant people are everywhere. What I know is that at the beginning of the war in Iraq 2003 most of my colleagues at work were supporting the invasion. And don't forget the many European countries delivering soldiers to Iraq ; the UK, Spain, Italy, Poland,...haha, I still remember the long discussions at work with the colleagues who didn't support the US. Looking back even I do have to admit Bush pushed it to far. He lied to us all, europeans and his own people.

  • I'm from Texas... And sorry to say that Bush is living in my city now. He stank up my country and the entire world and is now hiding in a rich, gated community. I just pray that the first ever terrorist nuclear bomb to be denoated on US soil isn't coming here because of him... :(

  • Thank you for finally saying that! Someone needed to. Jeez.

  • Spetacular!

  • Canadians remember what the Australians did. Defend mother England. Both along way from home and never returned.

  • Totally.

  • Didn´t know the guy from "The hills have eyes" had a band.

  • How dare you. Peter Garrett isnt Inbred?

  • Never knew the guy from "The hills have eyes" had a band.

  • I wonder why Midnight Oil never really cought on in the USA...

  • because the oils were very anti-government. That's the whole reason why Peter went into politics, to try and change the world. Pretty much. But that never happened. Now hes just a sell-out and, he hasnt done anything while he has been in politics either.

  • easy for you to say

what have you ever done to change anything?

have you ANY IDEA of how hard it is to change the status quo?

go on, get off that bloody fence and do something!

  • Yes, I do, actually. But it seems as if he hasnt even tried. I know he probably has. But when you're in government, you gotta toe the party line, and if you cross the floor, and stand for whats truely right, you will get the sack. I understand that it's hard, but its been what... 2 years and a bit? 2 Years and what has he done, other than give speeches, and little things. I honestly think he was making more of a difference when he was in music.

  • I'm just getting into the Oil now. My friend and I sing acoustic tunes and we do "Blue Sky Mine" and "The Dark Heart." Their stuff is great!

  • good!!

  • Those are American crosses, men buried in Europe for European freedom. Yet you hate us. WTF

  • Not liberty but peace. =p

  • The greater majority of Europeans do recognise the USA as our liberators and friends and very much like Americans. Only a minority doesn't. But they are just not smart enough to understand

  • VIVA La France!!! Je Tiem France Et Belgium Merci TRES

  • I don't hate Americans in general, just one in particular. Glad to see the back of George W Bush.

  • i think its the military cemetary of Verdun (France)

  • best song he remembering the people that fought for the land that you live now

  • i think phoetus is spelled like this ;)

  • nah it's spelled either "fetus" or "foetus" depending on where you're from

  • I think it's spelled phfeeeeeetos

  • Deadset we have the best songs about war:

    -Forgotten Years

    -I was only 19

    -Khe Sanh

-And the band played Waltzing Matila

    I love these kinda songs

  • mate you are a dipshit! how is he suppose to make a positivie change in a party such as the green's? Wouldnt he better served in a party that has more power such as the labor goverment?

  • Would you like a tissue princess ?? make a positive change in the Labor party, lol. Thanks for the laugh fella.

  • ok dipshit, what polcies have been successful implemented thanks to the greens hmmmm, None! Now how many policies have been made by labor, you do the maths and figure out where he has more chance to change things! Dumbass!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You're really being an arse, diesel!!

  • well i assumed diesel was implying that, because garrett has to tow the party line, he's not really able to bring about changes.

then again maybe he/she was just fishing for an argument, i don't know :P

  • Well i really dont see how you could possible make a signifanct change to the environment unless you are in a political party. He is making more difference now than ever before!

  • by uniting people behind a cause, activism, putting pressure on the major parties to implement policies, etc.

theoretically he'd be making more difference and i believe that's why he went into politics; to change things from the inside. but he also seems to have changed some of his long standing views since joining labor, or softened them at least, and i think that has left a lot of people disillusioned as to who is changing whom.

  • Midnight Oil sung songs that had meaning and put a message across which makes them aussie icons

  • NO THER NOT THERE FROM PLANNET ZOOBAH

  • Peter Garret is the Minister of the Environment for Austrailia...Really! Midnight Oil is Australian

  • you guys are idiots there chinese no there brazillian your all wrong !! there australian you idiots get it right !

  • haha, thats funny. i hope you are joking

  • a very nice song!, these guys can make some good music.... how did they create that abomination called - burning beds? or what ever it's called.... i hate that song

  • peter is just another pupet

  • there not chinese

  • lest we forget R.I.P

  • best chinese band ever

  • boy i hope thats a joke

  • get fucked

  • err....chinese......yer.

please tell me you were sleep-typing.

  • they're, Australians from down under, Duuude! ;-)

  • Thanks for this ngenet!

  • cant beat the aussie spirit

  • this guy was the best singer but the worst polition

  • Why is that?

  • R.I.P Aussie (live) music

  • was this video made in the US or down under?

  • France, actually. Read the description. Just a suggestion.

  • weapon song :)

  • great song, number one hits all

  • ...& fuel their planes that bombed hundreds of cities & killed innocent civilians...But yet we all get overwhelmed by the emotion of horrible events like that & forget why or how they actually eventuated. to lazy to actually research the "FACTS" of which u think u know but u dont. you sit there like every other sheep assuming that the media tell u the truth & your president or PM r honest and are looking out for ur interests..dont be so nieve...how many times must history repeat before u learn??

  • "A" friggen men

  • Before pearl harbour hardly 1/8th of the US population wanted to go to war...after the event nearly the whole population wanted war...so dont tell me the "entire world" wanted that war...thats bullshit mate, just like the wars before it and after it and today...they're all instigated to benefit the pockets of those few men...

And dont say the nazis were the only ones to blame, not when you had a US based company helping them create chemicals to execute millions of jews, and POW's..

  • because of this the Japan reacted in retaliation...worse still talks between roosevelt and churchill are even more damning. Roosevelt asked Chruchill what it would take to get Japan to instigate war on US soil...and Churchill suggested to the US break the act of neutrality and hence cut shipping of supplies. Why? so they could enter the war...because nothing props up an economy like unrestrictive warfare...just as it does today.

  • Oh by the way did you know that during WW2 that John D. Rockefeller's United States-based Standard Oil Co. supplied I.G. Farben - a german chemical company with supplies to create chemicals & petrol which fuelled the nazis bombers etc & chemicals during the holocaust?? Also did u know that the reason pearl harbour was bombed was actually due to aggravated supply shipment restrictions that the US initated..basically cutting their trade w' Japan on purpose so as to create an embargo (act of war).

  • On a different note, its weird to think they are dancing on someones grave...

  • AUSTRALIA RULES.... :)

  • dude rankcon im confused on the whole jewish converts acquiring palestine thing. 1. I think the name is Israel and 2. converts????

  • I've always had a strong interest in WWI. It's really the foundation of where we are today. The rise of the USSR/Russia. The ascent of America. The Jewish converts acquiring Palestine. Certainly the foundation of where we are today and the prelude to the end. If you look at the technological leap between 1915 and 1965, a mere 50 years, it is massive. Nuclear weapons, Jet aircraft, space travel. Makes you wonder if there is not someone....or something moving behind the scenes.

  • aliens

  • lol they're dancing on peoples graves

  • atleast its not peoples beds

  • where did your passion go peter garret?????????

  • Dont get me wrong, remember those who fought wars..and pay respects, but we should never have fought in the interests of a few men...just as we shouldnt today...remember wars solve nothing..all they do is allow certain individuals to profit from the money made in war and allow governments to put into place security acts to strip us of our freedoms.

  • A few men? The entire world you mean, if hitler came into power fully, then the world would be an entirely different place. We fought to save billions of people, so get your facts right

  • I never mentioned Hitler in anything i said, my point wasnt about hitler, and i did say (and i quote) - "remember those who fought wars..and pay respects" Yes they did fight for us against the nazis...im not saying that our men didnt fight for us. My statement was that war should never eventuate to begin with...

I have my facts straight mate, when i say "a few men" im talking about those with hidden agendas..the ones who start wars...the ones who benefit from the profit wars create...

  • never forget the Fallen.

  • Let remember all who have given all, We are so lucky thanks to them! Life is Good!

  • And people are still being sent of to fight foreign wars that have nothing to do with us.

  • Tive o privilégio de assistir um show da banda em 1997 no Olimpia em São Paulo... Excelente banda... o melhor show que pude ver até hoje... São excelentes... SAVE THE PEOPLE THAT LIKE MIDNIGHT OIL and their cause!!!!

  • Thanks for making the lyrics available. Powerful video and lyrics.

  • ... Beautiful ...

  • muy buena cancion

  • great song and video. thanks for posting it.

just one thing, it's "seasons of war and grace" and not "war and peace".

  • Great great band and great message ,mr garret talks it and walks it!!

  • Still sound as good as when I first heard it and definitely by far better than most stuff that come out these days!

  • Midnight Oil Rocks. One of the great bands from the 90s.

  • 80's

  • This is a total classic!!! "It reaks of politics!!!!" God Bless Midnight Oil!!! Thanks for sharing this song!!!

  • It's been a long time since I heard this song for the last time. It's really great and it sends a message.

  • now thats a ture Australian band

  • Makes me think of the lives wasted for the "glory" of the motherland. Especially when they do not reciprocate.

  • These shall not be forgotten years...

  • This song always chokes me up. I listen to it every "Memorial Day" (or "Rememberance Day" or "Armistace Day" or whatever your country calls the day they honor their war dead).

The amount of respect this song has for the honored war dead is rare.

  • nice to know that you are an irish american BUT THESE BLOKES ARE AUSTRAILIAN so where is the anaolgy?

  • this brings me back to 1990 when i was but 12....gotta say...still a great band (and album) after all these years...from an American of Irish descent....

Cant wait to find King Of the Mountain after this!!!!

  • Best Band Ever !

  • I agree with bellapanhead and ngfxoxo ... I was able to see this incredible band live in my hometown and was so incredibly moved. A band with something to say. I wish more Amwerican bands were like them!!! Go Oils!!!!

  • Peter, you were elected to govern, what have you achieved?

  • Libertate.

    Open your eyes people.

  • Midnight oil is such an incredible band. If only the United States government listened to them more often.

  • This band is awsome, but the USA wont let this kind of music be on the air, because of the lyrics..you know what they say...; TRUE HURTS...

  • Um, US radio stations DID play this song when it came out many years ago--Midnight Oil was pretty popular in the early 90s and their songs were in constant rotation on American radio.
