I do not know why they did not value the work of Bob in the mid-eighties. I feel that was very underrated and devalued. One of his best work Infidels, inthe eighties and Dylan make this song one of my favorites.
Lustre5,& davebuchan81 are insinuating that everyone should tolerate diabolical insults from inferiors like them who's intellectual knowledge is not quite fully developed to realize the capacity of their mind of a minnow remarks. Dum dums, Bob's the Joker,...man!
Great song....I saw Dylan for the first time during the Infidels tour. Saw him again a couple of years ago and couldn't get over the deterioration in his performance. Superb lyricist though..
@Alphamael82 Well how about you stop being arrogant with your "knowledge"of music and share your wisdom with us? Who is it referring to, I would love to know?
@23jokerman23 This song refers to the 'Beast' not so much a person but the system that represents/ reflects a certain position on Global affairs, we see this at this present time in the likes of the globalist agenda on economic/ political stability (the new moralists) , it is a system that ultimatly will be an afront to God (Jehovah) , indeed que Bob Dylans 'man of peace' ( some times Satan comes as a man of peace)
@Syrhani The comments I make here in no way refer to Bob Dylan the person, the comments I make refer to the political 'system' we see transpiring today, a system that Dylan foresaw.
hi can you check out my MY KICK ASS ORIGINAL SONGS RUFF BUT STILL GOOD;] BE ACE if you can give me ""Thumbs UP"2 help me get up there so they can all hear me ....APEX13 ...... THE MARK OF TOBIAS,
"rifleman stalking the sick and the lame, preacher man seeks the same. Who gets there first is uncertian." Mr. Dylan sums up the entire history of human civilization in one line, who esle could ever do that?
1980, Dylan played a concert at ASU. His band included a small Gospel Choir. The music didn't change overnight, it was carefully and distinctively different. Dylan, didn't leave open ended questions or speculation to fill in a blank. "Lord, take this badge away from me, I can't use it any more" What is the cost of the truth, if liars aren't going to buy it at any price? Classical Economics, Truth is Inelastic, Free, only the demand curve is elastic.
What are your thoughts regarding someone who has suffered the pain, agony & despair of a lost or imprisoned soul, then they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit? The weight of the world is off their shoulders and they are filled in abundance with His Holy Spirit. In Biblical terms, they are re-born washed in the blood of Jesus Christ and that presence is unmistakeable. Dylan had found true shelter and those Christian tunes (Serve Somebody, ect) don't pacify ignorance is bliss?
Recognize Dylan was striving to "do the right thing". He expressed himself honestly and his efforts were directed towards exposing the corruption of the establishment. Those efforts equate to Socrates getting accused of being wisest in the land. When you start gaining the title of Arch Angel of Anarchy, it is reason for concern. Dylan's "Apology" was Shelter from the Storm, followed by gaining Divine Wisom (absolute confirmation of God) by receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit
Anthony Scudato, wrote an unauthorized biography on Bob Dylan that was so incredibly insightful that Dylan approved it as an authorized biography. As brilliant as Dylan was as singer, songwriter, poet, muscian, father ect. Scudato was incredible at writing and research. Read a lot of biographies written by many many authors, Scudato was the best of the best.
At the time Dylan wrote Shelter from the Storm, he hadn't converted Christian to receive the gift of His Holy Spirit. Divine Wisdom, (absolute confirmation of God's existence) as Plato defined, is "a condition of the soul". The metaphor assigned the Devil was "her" and the entire song is about being deceived. Dylan's noble attempt to create peace on Earth. Eventually, comes to the stark realization "for the prince of the world is coming and he has nothing in me"- Jesus _
I know people like to compare Dylan and The Beatles but let's be honest Dylan is in his own stratosphere lyrics wise from anybody esle in the history of music.
The Beatles can' touch Dylan, and I like The Beatles but let's be honest, Bob Dylan = The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.
An awesome VIDEO! The epic poem of Dylan's post-Christian era from "Infidels". My wife's favorite song: she thought I was the "jokerman", and she was probably right.
Perhaps he who is so good at metaphor and being vague is commenting on all of us... our whims, our self-righteousness, our passions, our delusions, our cruelties and perhaps, even our absurdities???? To me, "Jokerman" feels like a historical journey that leads us right back to where we are now.
I am in a trance listening and watching and listening to this. Trying to make sense of what he is singing. I just am loving it. This is coming from an old disco girl. Wow, cheers to Dylan.............
This came out in '83....20+ years of great music at that point.... now it has been nearly 50 of Dylan...hard to imagine that one day he will be resting in the fields far from the turbulent space....thank you Bob for everthing
I watched this video on TV when I was little & my family having nasty issues all over us, & I remember the fear I felt back then - if I remember correctly, this was broadcast in Tokio, Japan, in the summer of 1984.
Years ago I bought the CD "Infidels" and since then I love it. Thank you so much for posting this video, today I do enjoy watching this.
The most haunting Dylan lyric, " I wish I could turn back the clock to when God and her were born, Come in She said, I'll give ya, Shelter from the Storm". With so many references to Dylan as the false prophet (jester stole his thorny crown) it had to wear on him. He had eyes wide open to deception, yet still was a victim. Dylan, like Socrates, was brilliant at asking the question; never claiming to have the answer, but always emerging as the wiser for at least admitting he did not know.
The best of the best. He is as complex as anyone who ever put pen to paper or blended words & music into a poets song. Bob is back on stage, but to the wise he's not there by choice. The business of saving souls....... he had handed that crown back to it's rightful owner. Loving parents do most anything, to save their children..........
@tjrtherocksponge well that's all subjective. for me, any band that contains 2 members of dire straits is not gonna be good. i'm not a fan. this production reminds me of all those other 60's survivors in the 80s like mccartney and the stones, in that they so desperately wanted a modern sounding record that they drenched their records in synths and horrible cheesy electronic drum sounds that just left us with very dated music. But as I said before even that can't hold back this brilliant song
Everytime I am playing solitaire lately this song is going through my head...however, I never listened closely enough to hear the words. I am amazed. Bob Dylan truly makes me feel inspired.

Dylan, you're the one that really makes me feel music...no fake like music today..you are mysterious and you're music is soul, heart and truth thank you Mr. Dylan
Though maybe not as lyrically impressive as Sir Mixalot's "Baby Got Back" or as deep as "My Dog Likes Oranges (but he'll eat apples too)", this song is still very meaningful.
P.S. -- just joshin' ya (about comparing it to Sir Mixalot's hillarious tune). This song rocks!
How does one begin. Genius on a sheer level would be a good start. There is no finer song when you have a moderate buzz on. Christ he transcribes all of human history, at least all the important bits into some six minutes. That is noteworthy but let us not forget how it all shows his lyrical superiority over most other song writers. This song is the LYRICS - listen and he/she will be set free!!!
Dylan really is just the greatest of all time. He's the GOAT, like they say about rappers and ball players. His lyrics ....so many people have been labeled "rock poets", but he really is one. They're poetry. "Half asleep beneath the stars w/ a small dog licking your face." haha. Who else comes up w/ imagery like that? He's so g.d good.
This song is basically a stream of consciousness explosion of words and images by Dylan. Who is he singing about? Jesus? Hitler? Someone else along the continuum of good and evil? Any one of us? The interpretation is entirely up to the listener, I'd say.
@squamish4244 He's singing about the deception of democracy , war, greed, lies, fatcats, motherless children and the Jokerman, in this case , Ronald Reagan.."you know what he wants", oh Jokerman, you don't show any response"
hahahahahah.. Right -on Bob.Tell it like it really is.
The bible is a book written by men, men have agendazzzzzz! Wake up. Bob is hardly a man of god. Look up Bob Dylan sold his soul. Just do it and see the godly one. hahahhaa.
Inspiration does not come from perspiration.........God is diffinitely in Bob.......Listen to Watered Down Love..........and you will not judge others but love them as God intends everyone to do........
This isn't about jews or christianity.......or who is your mother.........God is Love......whoever abides in Love abides in God and God in him.....1John 4:16
For those who think this about Revelations, or that Jesus was anything but Jewish.... Dylan says "The Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy are your only teachers." Go read 'em. They tell the Israelites and their priests how to arrange the temple, its prayers, its animal sacrifices, and, detailing the 614 "Mitzvot" (Good deeds) Jews are supposed to follow (besides the Ten Commandments.) With the destruction of the Temple, that changed .. this is about the Jesus of Matthew, Mark and Luke, not John

@OldManBieberFan...................No question about it. It's not even up for debate.

This song is basically a stream of consciousness explosion of words and images by Dylan. Who is he singing about? Jesus? Hitler? Someone else along the continuum of good and evil? Any one of us? The interpretation is entirely up to the listener, I'd say.
squamish4244 10 months ago
@squamish4244 He's singing about the deception of democracy , war, greed, lies, fatcats, motherless children and the Jokerman, in this case , Ronald Reagan.."you know what he wants", oh Jokerman, you don't show any response"
hahahahahah.. Right -on Bob.Tell it like it really is.
TheCozybear65 10 months ago
@squamish4244 I believe the song is about Dylan understood himself 30 years ago. I believe this song is his Self Portrait.
