The walkie-talkies really change the tone of this scene in a negative way. The bike chase isn't nearly as dire or as grave. The guns impart more immediacy, Spielberg. Come on!
Haha, I think all kids in the world thouht this when Gred says: Why can't just beam him up?" So true......btw, the coolest and most exciting escape in movie history.
2:46, god I hate the way they replaced the guns with walkie talkies. It looks really stupid since they're obviously pulling guns out of their pockets but know they're just pulling out fucking radios. And I coulda swore that she yells "no guns!" at some point in this scene, musta removed that too. Fucking bastards.
@sartistman1 I watched a video interview with Spielberg on Raiders of the lost ark's 30th anniversary and he said he regretted changing part's of E.t as it ruined the fans memories of the film. So at least he acknowledges it was a mistake. I always thought the guns showed how serious the government were about getting the alien back from the kids's and that this miracle creature is far more important than their lives and they wouldn't hesitate to use force to get it. I agree it ruined the scene.
@theero im a big fan of The Outsiders, and my favorite greaser is Ponyboy. And when I saw him in this movie (i haven't seen this since I was six), I was like "O my gosh!" But my first thought was when I first saw his face at 2:20, I thought "Oh he...looks like Ponyboy...." I was gonna say "is really cute" x) sorry, just had to say that
for anyone interested, go to Google Earth and in the search type in porter ridge park porter ranch ca. Once it zooms in take the little orange peg man and drag him onto Ormskirk ave so you can get the street view of the park. This is the park where the bicycle chase starts. Notice that the playground caterpillar is still there
At about 6:12 the guy with the brown cap/hat thingy pulls a cum face. A mate pointed it out to me around 10 years ago and since then I've never been able to watch this scene without cracking up. Too funny.
everything in this movie works 100%, the camera work on those bmx's while they road down the dirt hill was just amazing! and as soon as they lift off into the air - bring's a little tear to my eye :)
those days are now long gone but we will remember them!
after watching that piece of shit super 8, i just had to remind myself what it felt like to be in the presence of a real master back in 1982 when i was 9. this scene is so full of fucking win my hair is still standing as i type this period.
in the 80's all kids had BMX bikes and rode with out gay ass helemts

This is just so disappointing... When did guns become so offensive that we needed to replace them with walkie talkies...
