  • This made me a very happy kid when I saw it 30 years ago, and it makes me a very happy kid today.

  • @mistermuckle I saw it 30 years ago to and I am almost in tears ..

  • I saw this on Broadway in 1979. AWESEOME!

  • I've been switching back and forth between Rigby and Duncan, and I cannot remember for the life of me which movie it was I loved as a child. Both of these plays were eventually put into a video cassette right? All I remember was a blonde woman playing Peter Pan and I was obsessed with the movie.

  • Awe, look at how excited the kids in the audience are!

  • They all did their own singing. Sandy Duncan was fine but she cannot do what Rigby can do in the air or vocally. Cathy is an accomplished gymnast even the crew has commented on her abilities in the air and she flew higher than any of the others. She has done Peter Pan more than anyone else, something like 2,500 performances that span years. They all did a great job and all three should be applauded but my favorite is Rigby. Nothing she did is faked in any way.

  • @Mollidew Well, having seen both Duncan and Rigby live in the theater 2 times each, I can tell you that Duncan could fly, sing and ACT circles around Rigby --and I thought Rigby was VERY good. But Duncan was a Peter Pan for the history books. I still consider the two times I saw her in it as two of the top theater going experiences of my life. Unforgettable!

  • @Mollidew oh please, rigby is a snob. duncan is 1000 times better

  • @Mollidew Just saw Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan and you are right. Sandy Duncan was good but Cathy Rigby was FANTASTIC..

  • Spidey, curl up and die! Peter Pan forever!

  • All three did fantastic. Cathy did wonderfully and she did not make it look fake, she did remarkable. Mary Martin was awesome as well and so was Sandy Duncan. ALL THREE AMAZING ( ps, for people who can;t even do this plz don't criticize its annoying bc you are being a troll) now THIS WAS AWESOME

  • it seems like the costume of Peter Pan has changed over the years, I've seen Cathy Rigby's costume and it was slight different then that.

  • I saw this 4 times Miss Duncan was wonderful excellent to see all 4 times great cast and Music. bravo

  • THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!!! :D

  • That's Alex Winter Playing John Darling. He Went on to play Marco in The original Lost Boys vampire movie and Bill in the Bill & Ted Movies.

  • Exhilarating!

  • Lmao at 1:08 - 1:09. Those kids are losing their shits!

  • cant get over the reaction of the kids in the audience :O

  • I saw this on Broadway when I was 11. It was pure magic. I will never, ever forget it and what a treat to see it again! (I'm 40!)

  • Sandy Duncan is so enchanting as Peter Pan this version should have been recorded on DVD as well as CD recording for all lovers of this show.

there are recordings of Cathy Rigby 's and Mary Martin's versions.--check with

Barnes & Noble Booksellers for availablity..

  • My goodness Sandy Duncan looks so young!

  • I saw Sandy Duncan performing Peter Pan in December, 1979 - there was definitely no lip syncing...and when she came flying over the audience it was breathtaking!

  • Did Sandy lip-sync this number???--Must be almost impossible to sing and do the things she does--and considering the pain those harnesses cause.

  • I bet not

you should see some of the things Cathy Rigby does while she sings...

    Backflips...mid-air cartwheels

And plenty of High schoolers do stuff similar to this and sing flawlessly

  • Sandy played this part for around 700 performances on Broadway and around a year on tour. Broadway performers do not lip-sync during a live performance. This was video taped for tv. It is edited together from 2 performances of the number, one with an audience, one without. (Notice Michael's disappearing teddy bear?) I saw her do it live twice; she was just as good as in this video.

  • ya thats Alex alright LOL i am glad i do not have those kinds of glassesLOL boy my mom had those kind back then lol Alex looks my age right thier in that pic and my hight i am a very tall girl LOL i LOVE ALEXWINTER!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is that Alex Witner at 11 years old?wow he is cuit i am a big fan of Alex Winter i juist hread of him last year now i own the lost boys and the bil and ted collshtoin LOVE YA ALEX WINTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love sandy, i saw her live doing this and now that i see it. when she goes up in the air..its almost matrix like LOL. i now thinks its very cool she had a good take off. she was less child like then mary martin but still a awesome performance. she was however way more funny when flying then any other peter pan.. LOL i laughed.

  • I saw Sandy Duncan as Peter Pan on Broadway in the summer of 1980 during a matinee performance. I was an officer on a training cruise for rising sophomores at the US Naval Academy. We stopped in New York for a few days and, having had a crush on Sandy Duncan ever since Funny Face, I had to see her as Peter Pan. The audience was mostly kids, but it was magical.

  • I love love love this!!! I am a fan of Alex Winter. He is an amazing actor/producer/director. One of his most famouse movies he acted in is Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Its so great to see him as John in this!

  • saw her do this live when i was a small boy--must be why it takes a lot to impress me now with a live stage show!!

  • "Don't forget, don't be slow, ready set, here we go!" Flying across the stage is so much fun! Peter Pan = Luv

  • Do u have the whole movie? I have only seen the mary and cathy version. This looks like the best one. Pleaze put it on. If anbody else reads this comment and has it pleaze post it

  • god, that looks so much fun...

  • Better than Mary and Cathy! Wish I could see the whole thing...

  • I think, that if lovely thoughts really made you fly, I'd have to bolt myself to the ground in order to keep watching peter pan videos!

  • I cried, too. Funny how the flying sequence does that to you.

  • Wow. They must have had a blast pretending to be character from the Matrix in rehersal breaks.

  • What a beautiful show! Sandy clearly showed her wonderful talent in this lovely production of the timeless Pan. Does anyone know if a boy or a man has done the role on stage in a large community? I bet it is hard to find a male performer to play "the boy who will not grow up."

I enjoyed seeing how the children were ready to do cartwheels just when Peter began to fly. I would be terrified to try it. Even if I were hoisted securely, I would still fear falling... and maybe breaking my neck.

  • it made me teary eyed!!

    AmAzing!!

  • those little kids were dazzled.. it was SO cute :)

  • when was this?

and wendy looks older than 12

  • AMAZING!!!

  • wow this was a really good version!!

  • i love her and mary martin! she's adorable!

  • Well Sandy is definitely the prettiest of all the Peter Pan's!

  • Gah.

    The best peter pan ever.

  • wow

  • I remember seeing this as a kid. I must have been pretty young because I could not imagine HOW she was really flying! What year was this?

  • I love peter pan

  • Does anyone realize that she was the voice of Trixie in Fox and the Hound! So cool!

She's really good as Peter Pan but I think I like Cathy Rigby's singing voice better.

  • oh yeah! i hear it!

  • she and cathy rigby are my fav! i like mary martian but she is too girly, i liked the whole cast in general in the cathy rigby one,

  • this brought a very happy tear to my eye and a very happy memory to my mind

  • This is my FAVORITE musical

  • that looks like incredible fun!!! :)

  • Surprisingly well done. You know those kids had a blast doing this. What kid in their youth didn't dream of being able to fly?

Amazing what can be done on stage. Great job.

  • Mary Martin is my favorite, but she was a bit too girly. Sandy Duncan was the most convincing as a young boy!

  • Is the Sandy Duncan version available on DVD? I've seen Cathy Rigby and Mary Martin but no Sandy Duncan.......

  • No. The Duncan revival was never professionally filmed Though they came close when NBC President Brandon Tartikoff approached Duncan to televise it. BUt he was fired from NBC before it got anywhere.

  • LOL at 1:05

  • Iam actually crying. I went to see this production kicking and screaming and I was stunned. Joyous. And Sandy Duncan? I still say that in the hundreds of Broadway shows I have seen, this was the most perfect performance ever.

  • isn't she a dance teacher?

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. I grew up watching it over and over until the tape broke. I wanted to be Peter Pan so badly. Sandy Duncan is by far the best flyer. My favorite part is @ 3:36 when she does that spin thing. I'd give anything to be able to do that.

  • This one came to DC in the 1980s when I was a Warner Theatre usher...Ms. Duncan nailed the spirit and the joy of the role probably better than anyone. And I love two moments in this clip: Sounds like she giggles out of character @ 1:53, and at 3:35 the music's tempo quickens when the fog rolls in, the sets come apart, and the group flying begins. That's real magic on stage. And I was fortunate to hear the roaring audience at this moment about four performances a week. Those are memories!!

  • I agree that she was the best Peter Pan of all. So talented.

  • I like Cathy Rigby The Best.

Sandy is absolutely terrific, but I have to admit Cathy makes flying look natural, although Duncan makes it look fun.

  • She is amazing! she really does make it effortless

i recently saw her in the broadway Encores! "NO NO NANETT"! What a treat!

  • cool

  • zigfried64, have you ever seen the jerome robbins version? just type in the search box, jerome robbins, peter pan. the press enter.

  • she really looked as if she were flying. cathy rigby and mary martin just made it look fake. but the way sandy made her body move was incredible. i wish i could have seen it!

  • I agree. Duncan is the best flyer of the three main Peters. She never has that problem of turning her back to the audience while flying and she never "wobbles" as Rigby does (especially on the final spin up at 3:36-3:40). And watch how she lands at 2:09-2:10, one foot down then right into a walk. Rigby always landed on 2 feet with a thump and frequently missed her mark. Duncan made it look effortless!

  • With the type of flying rig used, its not up to the performer how hard they land or even ware they land. The entire movement (other than spinning, etc) is controlled by the operators off stage. If she missed her mark, the only person to blame for that is the guy doing the horizontal movements.

  • I was there!

  • OMG, Alex Winter looking pretty young there! lol

  • I actually saw this on Broadway... amazing and magical!!

I'll always remember how I felt watching the show

  • i was john in the play and it was so much fun!!! i got to fly...THAT WAS BEST PART!!!

  • I defy anyone to watch this and not crack a big smile from ear-to-ear.

    Sandy Duncan's enchanting.

  • Duncan was terrific - we saw here in Chicago where she flew out over the audience.

    And randyleesayer -well said.

  • i like how she flew over the audience. :)

  • my favourite part of the video is 1:05-1:08, because it shows how much joy this show brings to children, and it shows the real magic behind the performance.

    love it :) xxx

  • before i die i want to fly

  • This is my FAVORITE musical, and I've never seen this bersion,

but so far I really LOVE her version!

  • Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan, and Cathy Rigby, wonderful performances, wonderful actresses all - and they made "Peter Pan" live for thousands of children over several generations - so a "comparison" is very difficult, and unfair... How can you NOT love the "Peter" that you saw as a child?

I saw Mary as Peter Pan on TV, Sandy perform the role when I was a teen (awesome - as this clip proves), and I toured with Cathy on her tour in (1988?); she was wonderful onstage and off... They are all Peter!

  • This is my favorite version, between set, costumes, singing, and acting. Sandy brings out the very childish aspect of Peter, which is basically the msot important part of his character IMO.

  • I saw Sandy Duncan do Peter Pan in San Francisco.

At the end of the show she flew out over the audience, right up to the edge of the balcony. She was teriffic. I saw the show twice.

Perhaps, eventually, a video of the complete performance will materialize. Kinescopes of Mary Martin's 1955 performance can be bought on eBay.

  • HAAHHA thos girls in the crowd are going bizerk!

    HAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHAH

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! Sandy's Peter Pan meant alot to me back then, and seeing this really takes me back.

  • um... she's over-acting a little too much, lol

I'm glad they only have recordings of Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby

  • wow...wendy's OLD! mary martin[origional] always a good peter sandy does a GREAT job being a boy though havent seen enough of cathy to judge but im sure shes good

  • this is amazing. sandy is awesome

  • I love Sandy from When I used to Watch Barney the old one but I loved Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan

  • Gees, once she rose in the air, the crowd went nuts!

  • i love cathy rigby as peter pan better.

  • I think martin had the best BOY little kid attitude and her entrance was classic. Sandy was an awesome flyer and really had a nack for it. Rigby and sandy had the 2 best voises i think. but ALL 3 are wonderfull to watch. sandy and martin take me back to when i was younger. I love peter pan so much I got the main wardrobe from auction from the new film made in 2000. want to see go to my channel and see. i love huge productions of peterpan they are always great to see.

  • Sandy is the one I remember most growing up. I collect wardrobe and got the main wardrobe from the 2000 film peter pan( want to see the wardrobe? look to my channel)

but I still want to collect the plays wardrobe and its very hard. but there is nothing like the play, its awesome to see as long as you have a real good director. it always makes me happy.

  • yo yo yo yo yo yo--i didnt know Sandy Duncan was from Pter Pan! I just remember her from the Muppet Show.

  • Sandy Duncan / Cathy Rigby -- both were pretty good, but watch Mary Martin from 1960 and see how it is really supposed to be done. It's in 15 parts, but well worth the time to watch.

  • Mary Martin was a bit too feminine for my tastes. Duncan was 100% boy.

  • If that were the only consideration, former gymnast, Cathy Rigby, would have to win hands down. This vehicle requires the suspension of reality--an effeminate pre-pubescent boy isn't too much of a stretch. More important is the way Mary Martin never mugs for the audience while flying about--her attention is always on the children. Only two adults would notice or even care about these things; the kids only see the joy and wonder of a timeless and unforgettable fantasy.

  • yep she was! I love the other ladies, but Sandy will always be my favorite Peter. Thanks for the clip!

  • I think that Cathy Rigby is a better Peter Pan.

  • I disagree. Check out the Rigby video of the same number. Duncan is a better singer, actress and her flying looks Effortless. Rigby at one point almost flies into a dresser when trying to land on the bed. Duncan WAS Peter Pan!

  • Have a look at the video titled ZFX Flying Effects - Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan, "I'm Flying, that's her in the movie. She sings a lot better.

  • I have that DVD. Saw Rigby live 3x and Duncan 2x. Duncan was the better. Even on the video you reference, Rigby crashes into the wall over fireplace, Duncan lands like a feather. Rigby wobbles during her spin cuz she pushes off to hard. Not Duncan.

  • I never noticed. I still think that Cathy sings better than Sandy does.

  • I agree with you! Even though Cathy Rigby is FANTASTIC! Duncan has a different layer to the character of the show! Her emotions when flying make u feel as amazing as it feels to really fly!

OH there is such MAGIC in that performance...

That there is how theatre can take you away!

  • this version is my favorite.....she's my favorite Peter Pan....who agrees with me?

  • how old is this Wendy? anybody know?

  • Quite extraordinary effect, esp. for kids

  • And yes, the flying for the show is accomplished rather simply- with a design that has remained essentially the same from Mary to Cathy- Peter flies on his own track downstage- the pulley which is used for lift slides back and forth along the track. The Children do not have a track that affords them the same mobility. They essentially just go up and down- They can be swung a bit which gives the back and forth effect.

  • CATHY RIGBY! Oh, goodness...what has the world come to. I've only seen this one clip of Sandy and she's STILL better than that Cathy Rigby thing...And where Sandy succeeds is actually in her similarities to MARY MARTIN---whose performance was and is the DEFINITIVE Peter---Never to be topped before or since!

  • aweeeessoome

  • its nice but notas the cathy rigby production and the mexican production has incredible efects and music also fligts are better anyway do you know who designed this flights?

  • Fantastic!

  • I've been looking for a Sandy Duncan clip for ages!!

    Thanks a bunch!!!

  • i played Wendy n Peter Pan. It was SOOO much fun... especially flying!

  • how old were you?

  • WOAH CONGRATS! FLYING IS SO MUCH FUN!

  • I've never seen her, and she sounds good. I've heard all of the leading ladies that have played Peter and I'm afraid that Sandy is like a step down from Cathy. I love em both.

  • Sandy Duncan is kinda annoying but she is good.

  • She can do stage and TV,that is so difficult. She is great!

  • I think Cathy Rigby is better

  • nah not me......this girl is def. better. i mean....compare the voices!

  • i love it

  • I just worked as her personal dresser/backstage assistant on a play. Good times.

  • O and the reason they dont get tangled is because every wire is on a different track! Only Peter can go back and forth. The kids can only swing and go up adn down! The wires dont get tangles because they never overlap fully.

    \

    JSYK

  • There is somethign soo magical abotu this!

  • Watching it really makes you feel better! She's so talented

  • Awesome. (: Thanks a bunch! Sandy Duncan is just the greastest!

  • She sounds just like a young boy! You know what I'm talking about? on old cartoons, the little boys sound just like that!

  • O thanks that is sooooo cool! I have seen Mary play Peter and have seen Cathy play Peter and I even heard the original sing it but I have always wanted to see Sandy DUncan and NOW I HAVE! THANKS SOOOOOOOO MUCH!

  • As an early show biz acolyte, I saw this production and was transported to another time when musicals reigned on Broadway. Fast forward 15 years and a tour I was cast in used the Duncan sets and some costumes....Although I played Smee, I will always remember my connection to the Duncan revival! To see her fly over the audience in her curtain call stays with me always!

  • THATS AMAZING...wow i'm so happy. Did they make a VHS of this? i LOVE her!

  • This clip is from OMNIBUS [1980] TV series, hosted by Hal Holbrook. This particular episode had 4 B'way performances, but I cannot remember the other 3! So far, I have never seen it released on tape or DVD. Too bad.. I'd love to see the show again. I saw Sandy perform in PP live in 1979.. MAJORLY GREAT!

  • i dont see the strings..and wouldnt they get tangled?..call me stupid but i dont get how they do this without the strings showing and getting tangled..can someone fill me in? haha

  • In person the wires are visible, slightly. The scenic design and lighting "hide" them as best as possible. Peter's wire is on a track downstage. The kids' wires are on a track upstage. Notice that all the action is left & right, not front & back. B'way magic makes it all work flawlessly!

  • Holy cow, that's incredible! Mary who? Cathy who?

  • Fantastic ! Wow, a lot of energy in that performance (everyone , but especially Sandy Duncan) . Best thing is how the audience is just loving it. One of the best magical moments in theater.

  • happiness.

  • I can't to do perform this show in March!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. My very first theatrical memory; what a treat to be able to relive it tonight!

  • :) aw... i've never seen this before! How charming ^.^
