  • Nice done :-) Going to learn it soon, looking forward to it, and fears it... :-)

  • great kata especilly with the little time on it!!!!

  • Wow, looks pretty good considering the 3-year hiatus. I also took a break in between karate, mine was more like 12-years for spiritual reasons. I became more involved in church as a deacon and felt a conflict at the time. Not a deacon anymore though I'm a Christian, but now I'm back into karate for about two years. Funny how it never really leaves you, huh? Now I'm like my sensei's admin assistant. It's my way of making up for being away all that time. But enough about me, great job, man. OSU!!

  • Not bad dude i Too have had a long time off from karate a lot long then 3 years i go back to train from time to time and say hello to old friends.. keep it up your doing well

  • for such a long time without training your technique is amazing, the only thing i can notice is everything looks tense, it looks like your putting too much emphasis on pure strength, maybe try to just relax a little and let it kinda flow a bit more, but still a great kata congrats=]

  • Osu! Very good Kata, a little different than the one I do. So many versions of Seiunchin. The 00:16 movement is dependent on the bunkai you are learning, can also be release from a wrist grab. Don't think the masters intended for the bunkai to be written in stone, all kata have more than one bunkai. Maybe relax a little more. Osu! Shihan Mike Leverett "InsideTheDojo" Series.

  • a very elegant kata.. i currently train in shotokan and gojo-ryu. i had to learn saifa for my 7th-6th kyu and then the first ttwo heian kata for my 6th-5th kyu..im currently learning the three other heian kata and bassai-dai to double grade to 3rd kyu. seiuchin is next...I CANT WAIT! i feel i may switch to gojo-ryu permanent as the kata feel more natural... thanks for posting video.

  • Hey, u still alive? Send me ur new email!

  • From 0:22-0:48 the retracting of the hand after the uke is a grab to pull the opponent into a strike to the rib cage with the finger tips (Nukite). Also when you block to the outside try to avoid turning your head to much away from your opponent. Not to be overly critical but I'm doing the same kata; I've learned a few things. Check out the documentary Deadly Arts with Josette Nomardeau. Shes not exactly great but there is an example of seiunchin performed by a master. Hope it helps. Good Luck.

  • Hi FPL. Thank you so much for the pointers. I will keep those in mind as I continue to practice this elegant kata.

  • @FuturePianoLegend87 thats a good strong basic but if you really want to know what would even better..bunkai would be best to work

  • the poin you should take is you must know this bunkai beside the pattern of kata. it will useful for you to know how effective is it.

1 month for doing a kata is too short. you should train more and better :)

  • It's good, but it would be better if you bring your hands only to your chin at 00:16, since you are supposed to grab the thumbs of somebody who is holding your collar.

  • nice very sharp only one month ,did you have time to sleep to get this good maybe not. keep up the good work

  • Thanks so much! This will help me in my solitary practice.

  • It's very well executed...if I had to say anything constructive it would seem your a bit tense through it and need to relax a little more....sort of like relaxxxxxx and then tense on the last second of the execution of the technique. Other then that your hard training is apparent. Also I would say to water your lawn! LOL

  • My style (Isshan Ryu)has the sake kata just preformed a little differently. Its different but it still looks good. Ill have to upload all my katas so you can also constructively criticize them ; )

  • This is gkr's version of seiunchin

  • Very well performed.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Thanks mate :D

  • pretty good for such a long time not training

  • does ANYONE post okinawan goju ryu katas?

  • Nicely done. I'm sending you some fertilizer for that grass though :)

  • Actually, the grass is very green! It's just the colour of the video for some reason. If you look at all the other videos it's quite vibrant.

  • do u do gkr?

  • Nah. I don't do GKR anymore.

  • Why did you leave youre doing great. I have to perform that kata next saurday at tournament. Wish me luck

  • Good luck with the tournament.

I left because at the time, a great sensei of mine retired and some random replaced him. This random was very inferior to my original sensei and I just wasn't willing to fork out the training fee to be trained by someone who couldn't offer me much.

Travelling far to get to a good dojo was not practical at the time. Nowadays I train by myself and since I'm not doing it for competition I find it suits me.

  • the only thing that didn't quite seem right to me was it seemed a little bit fast, I'm sure when I did seiunchin, it was a very slow kata at the beginning

  • This kata demonstration helped me a lot in fine tuning the techniques in that kata. Thanks for uploading it.

  • You're welcome SithV1

  • Liked it all except for that grass again and the last bit with the left hand coming past the ear. This looks alot like how shihan does it in the dvd yet in class i am always told to get the left had behind (not outside) the left ear and rub my head behind my left ear before stepping forward. These recordings can get jerky at times. But as i said it was great and i liked to watch it. cheers

  • do you do GKR?

  • Whenever I want to see a good seiunchin I always watch this one as it has awsome kime and technique.

  • That's a good one!

  • Hey it still looks the same as last month!! I thought you were practicing this kata? 8-)

  • Hahaha. I like your sense of humour Sensei Prouty.

  • Thank you beibukan.

  • Hi, I noticed your tag said Goju, whereas your Seiyunchin was definately the Shitoryu version, done authentically and done well. I'd know, I did Shitoryu for 10 years before switching to Goju-ryu for another 15!

  • Hi Pechurin. I kind of put "Goju" in there thinking that that's where my version of Seiunchin is from. I admit I'm not too sure about the roots of my kata because the style that I "used" (past tense) to train with claimed they were drew upon katas from Goju and Shotokan.

  • Authentic Shitoryu version. Check it up on youtube and you'd recognise it. Fact that you did it so exactly leaves no doubt.

  • What style did you train in?

  • @stuffed42

I trained in Go Kan Ryu Karate for a few years. What about you?

  • i guessing that style was GKR

what style do u train in now?

  • I'm in between styles. I'm currently looking to join Shotokan, Shito or Goju Ryu. One of those.

  • Some of the goju schools that did not adapt Miyagi Sensei's post-WWII kata changes like Higa Seiko Sensei & Yagi Sensei do a version very similar to this. Not all goju school kata are the same.

  • Oh I didn't realise that re-war Goju and Shitoryu Seiyunchin were that similar. Learnt something today!

  • I believe that you can find a copy of Meitoku Yagi Sensei on youtube or Okinawa BBTV doing Seyunchin..check it out. Don't forget the close friendship of Mabuni & Miyagi.

  • Tell Woolfrey to fix the fence! It's distracting, I missed your whole kata. Try practicing another 1000 times and re-filming it when the fence is repaired. I'm sure it will be better!!

  • Well excuse me then! It's a bloody old fence. And yes it has been repaired, you know. Big metal one is up. Hope you'll be happy with the next video :P

  • Hey NewEnglandBudo I looked at your profile and you seem to be really into your karate. I read that you've been practising since 1972? In that case, care to give me some pointers for my seiunchin? Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • 1In sanchindachi u bend ur back leg a bit 2 much, thatll probably reduce the area of ur foot thats pressing the ground.2When u do yokouke with a supporting hand, after the 3rd shikodachi,ur block doesnt go out enough. That block should be able to stop a kick but if u do it 2 compact the kick'll reach your body anyways.3 1:19.U'r bending your neck.4When u stand in nekoashidachi at the end of the kata,I think u should push ur hips backwards & to the right a bit more.Ur shikodachi is great!

  • Thanks guys. And SilverfireWolf kudos for mentioning the lack of straight alignment of the hips in the cat stances. I didn't notice that particular mistake until you mentioned it. Arigatoo Gozaimasu.

  • I think your kata's looking great. I would recommend trying to straighten the hips a little more in cat stace. Also, the 45 degree angles need a little work in the first 9 moves in sumo stance. Besides that, looking sharp!

  • I've done karate for 15 years and I can say that your kata doesn't look bad, agree with the balance and some other details but looks pretty good, get your sensei to correct your hands for ex, the fists don't make a line with the rest of the arm and things like that. DON'T STAND UP WHEN MOVING!!!...hope this help. cheers

  • I noticed that you seemed off balance at some points and you should never sacrifice balance for a stance. I can't tell from the vid, but it sounds like you breath out your mouth as well, and I was taught to always breath in and out the nose, but that is probably just a difference in the schools. Other than those two things, black belt quality.

  • Freaking awesome. I think even the dog liked it =P
