Note... the Tivo boxes available in 2011 are abit more enhanced than what is depicted here. In my case, I just got FIOS. The FIOS (cable guy) installer brought out a cable card. He spent most the time setting up the outside boxes/and internal router. He had to spend about 10minutes on the Tivo box.

directv is better than tivo.. i have directv here in mexico and its %100 HD

Why does the tivo need a phone cable

It doesn't. It needs a phone line or a network connection. for guide data.

it doesn't actually need a phone line if you high speed internet, but the reasoning for this is so you can utilize the tivo service meaning so you can get the program info and so you can set up a season pass which will allow the tivo to record every time that show is suppose to come on.

What res does the TiVo support on HDMI out, does it upscale to 1080p?

It won't work in Europe. Europe uses their own TV standard that won't work with tivo.
