If they don't have a problem with it, cool. My girlfriends family are from serbia and almost all our friends are European, they don't have a problem with the word. But it's meant to be a stereotypical insulting term, so I don't feel it is right for an Aussie to jump on tele and stereotypically impersonate Europeans like that. If it were the other way around (European on t.v. labelling all white Australians) I'd be quite offended and pissed off.
