I don't agree with the comments about Britain discounting the help of Commonwealth and Empire troops in WW2, admittedly I mix with people with an interest in military history but I know that amongst them nothing could be further from the truth, we deeply respect and acknowledge the huge contribution made by all those from the Empire and British Commonwealth who fought against the Axis.
What a brave and noble people! The Sikhs were among the first people who stood up to the Moslems and refused to be second class "dhimmis" or "kakfirs."
I've a serious doubt, the lady Alex von Tunzelmann are you a historian in true sense or you just add up with the second hand story, just to have some name and fame. let me tell you the fact Gurkhas who fought for British empire for more than 300 years is still proudly serving the Queen is from Nepal not from India, I just want to let you know please respect your profession after all you are a historian and you have all the duty to give me the correct information about the history or present.
This unit against a common ennemy is the foundation of the army. At that time there were small kingdoms but instead of uniting their forces the kings were busy in their petty disagrement. This divide and rule was also implemented by the british who from managed to conquer the whole of india but Punjab for a very long time becasue again punjab was united under Maharadja Ranjit singh and had a discplined and united army of Sikhs
@anirudhshumi .When you read of the history of India, you will learn that under Aurangzeb the hindu faith has in danger of being extinct. People were givne the choice to convert or die. Gur Tegh Bahadur the 9 th sikh guru gave his life not to save his family or his sikh followers but rather the whole of India and the Hindu faith. After his death his son Gobing SIngh created the Khalsa with the purpose to defend themselves and the wider population against the mughals.
I have had a vid of the contribution of the Indian Army Muslim contingency in helping this country stay free, now I saw this vid and it is an eye-opener.
The valour of all the "colonial" volunteers in beyond question, the Indian army stands out in terms of courage and loyalty and commitment, and having watched this Sikhs and people from the Punjab are brave and true heroes.
I salute you.
I am keeping it as my feature vid for many to see and watch.
Share this video with as many British /Canadian/Australian/American/French people as Possible. Some of them might stop calling us Osamas, khomenis, etc
The contribution of Sikh soldiers is indeed underestimated. All the fatalities recorded in the service of the UK in WW1 and WW2 will find an honourable place on the National War Memorial to be built on Dover’s Western Heights. Perhaps our only guarantee of avoiding a repetition is to educate our youth about the cost of our present liberties and freedoms resulting from the sacrifices of two previous generations in which Sikhs distinguished themselves with extraordinary acts of valour.
It is not very well known but the Sikhs also protected the rest of India from the fundamentalists spreading throughout the land. They engaged in war with them and checked the progress of fundamentalists. Proud of the Sikhs. They make India proud.
I hate war but my Respects to the Sikhs whose religion I just started studying
