how high can the ammonia levels get during a cycle? what level should you do a water change at? ive been doing 25% changes daily is that enough or should i do more? i dont want to hurt or stress out my fish
@ChellseaRose It depends on your source of ammonia. The best way to know if your fish will be too stressed out is to test the water. if you lightly stocked the tank for cycling 25% water changes should be good :)
@MyFishCare101 today my ammonia dropped to zero befor the water-change and my nitrite (which has been zero till now) was at 0.25ppm. is 25% water-change still okay?
awsm but nitrogen fixation and how it gets back to the atmosphere are the parts which i don;t get we have a pretty big cylce than that.........anyway awsm video and simple
@MyFishCare101 Haha! Pants, my black ghost, would beg to differ. If I tried to feed him something other than his beloved beef heart, he would be quite offended. Heck, my betta wouldn't appreciate being fed lettuce either :P
Although, I guess if we're talking about goldfish...
@PartAwesome Plants consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, which the fish needs to survive :)
They also remove ammonia and nitrates (but not nitrites).
Decaying plant matter will also contribute to ammonia levels, so the plants are active in all stages of the cycle.
Some people will actually have low-tech or no-tech setups, where the tank is heavily planted with few fish and all they do is feed and top up the evaporated water every now and then (no water changes, sometimes no filter even).

hi SArah, lately i've been seeing lots of snails in my fish tank and i really had no idea where they came from. Do u think i should keep them snails? please let me know and thank you!
@Mwuah191 Snails poop a lot! I would recommend squishing little snails eggs if you see them up by the glass (little jelly blobs) and putting a small plate with some food on it (fish food, veggies, etc) and when the snails climb on it pick them up and throw them out. The overpopulation will also eat your plants, it you have live ones :) THanks for watching!
@Mwuah191 If your plants are yellowing in means there isn't enough nutrient in the water, or too much ammonia/nitrite. Check for these in the water and if you aren't already, try fertilizers from the pet store :)
do snails help get rid of the nitrate and such?
what does?
AlwaysMissAshley 6 days ago
@AlwaysMissAshley No, Nitrate is absorbed by plants and removed with partial water changes.

@PartAwesome LOL yes, I agree that carnivores would not find veggies and plants yummy, but many many fish are omnivores ;)

@asiandude666 I'm sure at least some do, but at least this will encourage growing plants and doing partial water changes.
