  • awesome vid

  • Put linux on it!

  • I played with Arachne back in 2000 on an old 486. It's surprisingly decent.

  • Incredible :) QC

  • Arachne was very interesting piece of software. I've been using it as my primary web/mail/news browser back in the early 90's with a IBM PC/XT and later with a 286. It was very swappy and slow, but it did run. Try do it with M$ software. Those times the 33k modem wasn't the bottle neck, it was the 512k RAM.

  • A jak bawić się internetem w DOS? Specjalne sterowniki?

  • @stroggowy666ppp

Tak, potrzebujesz tzw. "packet driver", czyli DOSowy sterownik do karty sieciowej. Do tego musisz indywidualnie w każdej aplikacji ustawiać TCP/IP (Twoje IP, IP routera/mostka, DNS itp.).

  • i would prefer arachne browser cause it wasnt boring and you can see pictures but in bobcat browser and lynx, only text

  • Where can you download arachne? I have A DOS computer and I would love that browser.

  • @TheFunnyfilm

    Maybe at glennmcc.org

  • Most of ISA and some of PCI (especially older) ethernet cards have DOS packet drivers. This can be checked in google.

  • @OBSysteme

It's true. Well, there are 'lite' versions of many web pages (news etc.) intended for cell phones, which contains almost only text.

  • Is this like the swithc from text based internet to internet with images?

  • @juliuslagerlf

No, I'm using one program to browse in graphics mode (Arachne) and another in text mode (Lynx).

  • @LtSyrek

    Ohh... ok. :)

  • Polak ??:D

  • @punisher1519

    Tak. :)

  • Polak ??:D

  • @OBSysteme I do believe I understood your point that sometimes you'd go back to a clean screen with no distractions. I just meant it would probe frustrating to use one of these text-only browsers these days precisely out of lack of text-only sites (except for a few remnants of old pages you find still not erased from some old server).

  • @OBSysteme But most present-day pages make little or no sense viewed in txt-only. You'd have to leap 10 to 15 years to browse with some coherence (as there were actually pure hypertext pages. Today you'll get captions refering to pics/videos you are not watching, flash parts missing (which can include links, buttons... necessary for the page), same with java functions... Nothing will do much sense. Well, at least you are almost sure to get to the "About this page" and "Copyright" links :-P

  • What will happen if you're surfing Youtube?

    Can't see the videos?

  • @hateWinVista

I can load Youtube, but only in text mode - no images, no flash, no videos.

  • @LtSyrek

    ok,thanks

  • Can you get viruses when you are browsing the web in 486?

  • @MattT1996

Only when you download virused MS-DOS program and run it, otherwise it's impossible.

  • takie gowno kiedys ciagnelo w pracowni komputerowej polsl i to jeszcze do niedawna

  • I've done this too several years back with a 486 and arachne. It was fun for a while.

  • can I run this from vista command prompt?

  • @italouruguayricano

    I think it's not possible.

  • Hehe, my 486 does Windows 95

  • cool :) how can I configure DOS with my LAN card "intel 8/16 ISA"

  • You should find "packet driver" for your LAN card model and install it. Then, easiest way to connect internet is to use Arachne; it has gui and setting connection is quite easy.

  • I have Arachne but I have problem with this "packet driver" can not find from where to downoad and how to install and configure it
