  • It seriously wasnt a happy time during those fires. I lived in the The Terrace, just above The Village in Newhal right by Placerita. We were sitting at the benches and watched the distant smoke from Castaic Fire. and watch the Sylmar fire burn dow the hill to the cemetary right by the freeway. And it jumped the 14 freeway and continured destroying. There were people all over Docweiler Rd, parked ann watching the fire. Looking back...you sit there and think...I was there.. o3o

  • @BeautyXTwisted Prior, my friends gatheredd outside and watch the Placerita Fire make it's way down from the other side. It was small, but very threatening, because we have an oil plant stationed at the bottom. It was pretty cool to see the two planes swoop down and take it out. If they hadn't, we'd have gone bye-bye if that fire hit the oil plant..

  • I think that part where it jumped the freeway (at Newhall Ave - what used to be San Fernando Rd.) is in one of the time lapse sequences here... most of this vid is looking that direction from the top of Sierra Hwy. It got pretty scary at times - watching all that fire heading right towards the heavy population areas in the SCV. I'm glad it didn't cause any more destruction than it did. Thanks for watching and commenting! =)

  • my house is/was across the street when this happened we had to get out haha

  • I hope your house, things and family made it through OK!

  • My Mom has her store write down that street. Every morning as we opend the store this homeless mad would greet us. then we didnt see him for when i asked the other men he use to be with they told me he had severly been burned in this fire and he had been in the Hospital for over 3months in critical condition. thankfully i saw him again even though he has not fully recovered he is back greeting us goodmorning everyday... All is lost but much is Gained God Bless everyone...

  • Wow - that is an amazing story of survival! Glad to hear he's back around again :-)

  • aww, thats sweet. offer the poor guy some assistance though. sounds like a decent guy, a shame he hasnt a place to call home.

  • Wow! What a great picture. I shoot for abc news and I live right here in Santa Clarita, so when a fire is on the rise, I have to go out and shoot it. It is very exciting, so I almost look foreward to fires, but of course I would rather them not exist. What camera did you use?

  • Considering all the fires we have here, it's surprising how little I get out to film them. I'm sure I've missed a lot of great photo ops!

I used two cameras on this one; a Canon 5S-IS for the time lapse clips, (nice, clear HD), and a JVC MiniDV camcorder for the live shots. Unfortunately, the 50mph Santa Anas knocked-over the tripod/JVC into the dirt, coating the lens with a thick layer of dust that I didn't notice until later, hence the hazy-looking live action shots. :-(

  • unbelievable..i always saw fires around other mountains..but Never around my mountains i live near..

  • Yea - it gets pretty scary sometimes when it's right at your front door. We've had plenty of fires up here in the SCV over the years, so it seems like we see this sort of thing all the time. Thanks for watching/commenting!

  • My deepest thoughts go out to those who lost their homes.

Does anyone know if Tor Johnson's old house made it out?You might know it is the house from the opening scene of "Plan 9 From Outer Space"

  • I myself haven't heard much, other than the mobile home park that was shown on the news. Maybe someone from that area would know...

  • I believe the house was lost in the fire but I could be wrong. I live in Valencia on the border with Newhall. It was not a happy time during this fire.

  • this is not my favroite you know

  • That's certainly understandable - especially if you or someone you know suffered losses from this event. If anything, maybe vids like this will help make people more cautious about, and careful with fire. ..and hopefully the arsonist that started it has been caught and properly dealt with.

  • Great work. It sparked an interest for me in time lapse now.

  • Thanks! Speedin' stuff up (and slowing it down, too) has let me see some really cool stuff I would never been able to see - and it's cool that I can share it online. Make sure you send me anything T/L you make! :D

  • Very nice, big work.

  • Thanks, Christian :-)

  • hey nice video

i really liked the music track is there anyway i could download it

  • The MP3 is available free at JCMDI(D0T C0M). On the Technician sub page, select the "Ruins, part 1" CD content page. You can right-click the speaker icon next to the song and select "Save target as..." to save it to disk. Enjoy!

  • 2.07-2.20 looked awesome! Nice vid indeed!

  • Hey good to see you! I liked that sequence too - I was only able to shoot for a short time (about 90 minutes) but I got a few decent bits during that time. Thanks for the view and nice note! :-)

  • Excellent work. I had to evacuate Saturday morning at 5:30 am. Luckily, other than having to clean up a lot of ash and cinders, there was no damage to our house.

  • Wow - you were lucky - glad to hear a bit of a mess is the worst you had to come home to. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

  • Who started the fires and why?

brasschecktv (dot) com (/)page (/)484 (dot )html

  • I think they're still looking for the culprit(s) for this one. I heard they caught some of the arsonists from the other fires.

  • Hi jcmegabyte. Have you watched this video?:

brasschecktv (dot) com (/)page (/)484 (dot )html

Seems to make a lot of sense! At the very least CA should get some decent airplanes to put out the fires! I also wonder whether HAARP might be involved?

  • I have a feeling the Triange Complex Fire (which started in a riverbed) was likely to turn out to be someone mucking about with matches. They caught some jerk red-handed on Monday in Malibu, trying to ignite a NEW fire. A resident saw him trying to light up brush, and called 911. The Tea Fire was apparently started by a bonfire which was not put out fully before the students who started it, left. Every year...all it takes is the Santa Anas to begin kicking in October, and the firebugs go crazy.

  • Funny how the Santa Anas seem to bring out the bad guys and lower IQ levels. You'd think people would have the sense not to do *anything* with fire when it's windy and dry. Maybe their own house has to burn down before they really think about it. As for fire bugs - maybe burning at the stake would be appropriate. Harsh, but if the shoe fits...

  • If you've ever followed up on persons who have been caught, charged, convicted and sentenced of starting brush fires, you might be shocked by how light their punishments are. Even those who INTENTIONALLY sparked a conflagration that ended up destroying a long string of homes/property/livelihoods. It baffles the mind.

  • That stake is sounding better all the time...

  • Wow, scary and beautiful at the same time!

  • Yes - definitely - especially when your house is right in the path! Thanks for stopping by :D

  • Nice work! I posted Video footage of a Air Attack Staging Area in Porter Ranch on Sunday. The Helos filled up with water and flew back into the fire, 3 at a time.

  • I went and checked that out - cool shots! :-)

  • Indeed. I guess that's typical of nature - It's all part of the balance. Thanks for the view and nice comment :-)

  • it's amazing how something so awful can look so beautiful. i like the music too.

  • Hahaha yea I haven't decided which to prepare for next - the big earthquake, winter floods and mudslides, tsunami... whatever - CA is sure taking a beating!

  • AWESOME! Great viddie JC :) But then again I'm not at all surprised :D

...And hey ya know, I dunno but I thought saw Anakin at 0:18...any Star Wars fans here? ;D

  • I couldn't see him, but he COULD have been in there somewhere - right on the edge of the lava lake. Kinda DID look like a volcano!

  • i hope you work for tv or film cause your really good with a camera. great music by technician

  • Maybe some day. I've been getting some nibbles from studios lately. Thanks for the view and great comment! :D

  • what kind of camera do you usually use if you dont mind me asking?

  • The time lapse sequences were shot with a Canon 5S-is. The realtime video with a JVC MiniDV camcorder. The wind was howling on the idge I was shooting from so there's all kinds of unwanted movement, blur and color weirdness, even with study tripods. Still, I got some neat stuff you don't usually get to see - especially those flares were cool to watch. :D

  • impressive. [the music is inappropiate, for me; gives a cold air to the dramatic scene].

  • I couldn't really decide on which music to use. I didn't have any new stuff handy, so I had to select from my catalog of older tunes. This one comes from the late 80s. Thanks for watching!

  • Great footage but scary!

  • Fortunately the fire was several miles away. Gotta be some sight for those firefighters being right in front of it!

  • Awesome footage, and yet fearsome at the same time.

  • Definitely much safer to watch on YouTube! Thanks for the view and comment :-)

  • neat! :)

  • Thanks! :D

  • Come on baby light my fire!! Wow, looks great.

    Redo

  • Hahaha yea - you could get pretty toasty out there! :D

  • Fantastic, just like all your videos!

    Rick

  • Thanks so much for the view and nice comment! :-)

  • Awesome, i love it! :-)

  • Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching and commenting :D

  • Very well done as editing and music, I give the idea of the big fire in an environment frequented by humans.

    Congratulations!

    Giuliano

  • Great comment - thanks so much! :-)

  • isn't it strange something so beautiful to look at is at the same time so dangerous and devastating. we have a lot of fires here in summer, it scares me so.

    be safe huh...

    oh Technician rules!

    good morning :D

  • I thought so too - I just took another drive around tonight's fires - the colors are spectacular against the pitch black darkness. too bad it has to be so destructive like you mentioned.

I think I've seen some world news about the fires where you are too. Looks like it gets just as scary as it does here. Fortunately we're upwind of the fire this time so no worries at the moment. Thanks for the nice note about my music (that was some of my older stuff) :D :-)

  • yes we have devastating fires here, last year was really bad, worse thing here is that most of the time it is arson, so not a natural phenomena... there will be always sickos :S

i love this piece too, i want to buy a cd, so you let me know where i go and order huh?

don't drive too close to fires though ok?

  • Unfortunately, most, if not all of our fires were set by arsonists, too. I know that they caught at least one of them. I hope he gets the stake!

  • Cool beans.

  • Thanks for watching/commenting! :D
