Many commercial fireworks displays are hand fired still, to go out and buy 30 cues can cost quite a bit of money, our company hand fires 6" and lower, the larger ones like 8 10 and 12" shells are used by a cue but with 8 and 10s you can get away with longer fuses, so electrical is rarely used.
I understand the first person account of fireworks injuries. I was at an out of state party and someone lit a bottle rocket, it slipped and went right in my ankle, causing second degree burns. Actually in Ohio though, the only fireworks that are illegal are Bottle Rockets, Molotov Cocktails and a few other types that I forget what they are called.
yea, that was some nice sh**. amazing stuff. it is so an adrenaline rush, watching all your work come together like that, and listening to people cheer...yea, its good stuff=] i love fo it!

This fireworks show was produced by Zambelli Fireworks (I just video taped it) and they could better answer your question.
