Thank you for posting and translating the interview. Personally I think the spritual element in Paolo's message is a distraction. But I have deep respect for him and others before him like St Francis of Assisi. Lenin once said that if there were 10 St Francis' then there would be no need for revolution. I think Paulo was a true 'Christian', i.e trying to be 'like' Christ... not just to follow what the church says.
Paulo Freire's works has contaminated brazilian education in a way I might not be able to describe in a few lines. I'm a brazilian student and you don't have idea of how we're sistematically exposed to marxism, liberation theology and Paulo Freire's ideas since we're, I don't know, six ears old maybe. Those ideologies are so strong among brazilian teachers, and the students are so tired of this kind of proselytism that many are getting near and near to the right wing.
It's not fair to say that Marxism and Christianity are "grossly incompatable" if you don't understand the goals of the Marxists. I'm one. I also believe in God and Christ. How is this possible? Marx wasn't perfect, and nobody thinks he was. Materialism is a tool for combating the false illusions of capitalist society. Spirituality is sometimes a tool for spreading capitalist ideology, but I, and many others, have testimonies of Christ, while struggling to create a socialist world of justice.
"this conception of Christ as a political figure, a revolutionary, as the subversive of Nazareth, does not tally with the Church's catechisms." -JPII
BenedictXVI, strongly opposed elements of liberation theology. Vatican twice condemned the liberationist acceptance of Marxism and violence (first in 1984 and again in 1986).
Marxism tore apart South and Latin America. How many more of her children must die?!
The only thing that tore apart the latinamerican people were the rightist military juntas supported by the CIA and the USA government. Theology of liberation has always been the voice of the wretched of the Earth. And the last two Popes have been real pricks who have no idea what's going on in Latinoamerica.
Note that he emphasized that he was VERY YOUNG at the time he tried to mix the unmixable. Of course, that was an unattainable goal, the mere wishful thinking of someone "very youthful, very young" as he puts it. But in the old age he persisted with his childish thinking. He didn't change. Paulo Freire was a fantasist, full of good intentions.
Paulo Freire was not a fanatist. He was an honest christian. He was a man full of hope and plenty of praxis. Something that it's difficult to say from any other man. He thinking is not childish, maybe you can understand it. The fact is that you really have to be a christian to be able to do what Freire did. To be with the ones who need hope and education. Childish is a person that doesn't get the reality can change more when the Gospel become praxis.
Christ is not about Christianity, just as, as Marx himself said "I am not a Marxist", Marx is not about Marxism. If you TRULY understand Christ's teaching and its HISTORICAL CONTEXT, then you would also ACCEPT Marx's thinking. Misunderstand both, you become an ideologue and not a humanist who is on the side of people. People say Marx said "religion..opium..", but read the whole passge and you'll realise he attacks religion that disguises the REAL SUFFERING IN THE WORLD. There's a world to win!

Marxism and Christianity are grossly incompatable. We can't perpetuate class warfare, nor diadactical materialism! Christ came to liberate souls not to set up governments!
neither christians not marxist want to perpetuate class warfare. The purpose of liberation theology is not to set up governments, but to free men from sin.
Give me a break! Liberation Theology is nothing more than Marxist/Leninist doctrine masked as Catholic/Christian theology. Last I checked Communism didn't solve anyone's problems.
what ever you do for the least of these you do to me? do you love me? - feed my lambs. gimme a break pal - christ was/is all about liberation, as for marxism, I don't see where it's really congruent w christianity in that it elevates the state above the individual - doesn't mean that there isn't some common ground there - it just diverges at a certain point
A provacative thinker of education, indeed. I'm in the Hannah Arendt and Northrop Frye camp in terms of education. They believed education must be conservative, in the sense of conserving students from the political world. Freire paved the way for a politicized discourse of education, one that runs of risk of being a form of leftist indoctranation. As much as I'm against the critcal pedagogist, they intrigue me nonetheless.
His understanding and analysis of Marxist theory are very much an attempt to bridge the cultural gap between the orthodoxy of the catholic lower clergy and the social movements that very much demanded traditional institutions to reformulate their language and relationship with their constituents for sake of authoritative legitimacy.
He obviously turned into a serious philosopher during his very adult years, led by his progressive understandings of social conditions and narratives in marginalized communities in both Africa and Latin America.
Your posting is priceless... as I have been studying the writings of Professor Freire for over a decade now... and have never really relied on video footage. This is great stuff.
Thank you for your efforts.

Marx said that to be a Marxist, one MUST be both an Atheist and a Materialist.
Marxism is opposed to Christianity - dogmatically so.
