One thing I love about One Piece is it effortlessly reaches the viewer, no matter what medium you use. It goes beyond the screen and pats you on the shoulder to say that we are their nakama. This scene proves that, since you not only feel the crew's pain, but also your own pain since you will forever leave a dear nakama, who in turn has considered you a nakama as well and part of their epic journey. Kudos to One Piece and Oda. Best long running anime ever :D

Going Merry actually died from a broken heart, not from a broken body. His soul has been completely let out and given to the Thousand Sunny so that he can continue adventuring with the Straw Hats. This is one of the most saddest parts in the entire One Piece series.
