I prefer Capture NX2... That control point tool is great and the layout is far more straightforward. Lightroom's UI feels needlessly all over the place, and like photoshop ctrl+z only goes back once.
What you mentioned about how you can't copy the settings from one image to a batch of images on capture nx2 isn't entirely true. There's a "copy and paste edit's" option in capture nx2 that does pretty much the same thing as that. It's mainly used for transferring the white balance settings across multiple images. After that it's on you but that's not a huge deal because adjusting white balance is far more time consuming then sharpening and such.
@Lautamaki I'll agree with you there. The main point I was trying to make was that I didnt think CaptureNX was as intuitive or as user friendly as Lightroom and I still stand by that. Sure they both accomplish the same tasks, but I think Lightroom does it better. Just my opinion of course...
Thanks for this. I am a novice at this but I had raw files of monkeys zoomed in at 100%, I was not able to get Lightroom 3.3 photos as sharp as NX 2.2 no matter what I did (I had NR completely off on both as well ). Maybe worth looking into. Another cool feature in NX, you can selectively sharpen ctl points, like eyes...
Good tutorial and while I agree that Lightroom is well laid out and very user friendly, the image quality is still nowhere near as good as that produced by CNX2.
Also, as others have said, just make sure "keep all steps active" is selected and you don't lose your edits if you change something.
@TheDajoca IQ is dependent on your camera and the quality of the pic you frame way more than any software on your computer. Both apps will do a good job developing a quality image(raw) wheras both will struggle to make a badly taken pic look good.
NX 2 is slower because it's doing more. I can't remember at this time what all it's doing (something with retaining data in the .nef) but it's more accurate etc that's why it's so incredibly slow. Point being, if you have the patience, the quality is far better in NX2.
I use both as well as Photoshop and comparing CaptureNX2 and Lr is a bit like comparing an apple to an orange. They aren't designed to do the same thing. It's just about picking the best tools for a certain job.
Just a note on having to click on the steps in NX2 to reactivate them. If you go into the preferences under General you will see a tick box to keep all steps active. Tried it out and by golly it works!
Useful comparison. Control points are da bomb, I love them and they are exceptional useful, IMHO. I use both, LR and CNX2, each has its benefits, and I use Nikon ViewNX2 (new version, free) rather than the CNX2 browser.
about 3:50 - 4:20 issue that takes away later edits when you change something form before in Edit list... just go to Edit, Preferences, General and check box that say "Keep all steps active in Edit list". :)
About copy/paste settings, you both (BustedShutter and jhwjresw) aren't quite right. You CAN copy/paste selective adjustments easy. Just highlight one or more edit sets and copy only them from batch icon, then paste where you want them in browser.
I use Nikon Capture NX2. I do envy the aspect of Lightroom that allows you to so easily copy changes to multiple images, but it's not as hard in NX2 as portrayed. You can in the browser window within NX2 copy and paste changes from one image to others. But then you will wait. And you can't be selective in what attributes you are copying; it's all or nothing.
Thanks. Good review. For my purposes Capture NX2 is the one for now.

3:31 - it is not true. You must only select "Keep All Steps Active in Edit List (Requires Fast Processor) in Menu Preferences/General.
Real photographers have computers with fast processors...

There´s lot of ignorance about Capture NX in this film.

And yes, NX is slower than LR.
