  • That was a nice touch with the two innocent babies sleeping by each other. Thats awfully nice of you to let them out a few hours a day. Into a fucking 20 by 20 run. Right before you slash their throats. You fucking sadistic sons of bitches need your fucking asses handed to you. Get a real job you low life degenerate scum.

  • I love animals, they're delicious!

  • Some animals are slaughtered, it's sad but true. However animals in nature die everyday. Do you think they had a choice when their predators came to rip out their throat or tear out their insides? No, they were mercilessly slaughtered by another creature for food. If that omnivorous bear can kill a salmon as it struggles in vain to reach the nesting ground. That bear could eat plants and berries, so why doesn't it just do that? Because nature designed bears and humans so they could eat both!

  • I admit that a lot of things about the way animals are kept and treated do need amended. Quick and painless slaughter should be the ideal, the creatures shouldn't have to deal with hours of torment before death. No matter what the end purpose, the animal should have the best quality life possible from start to finish.

  • Also, robbing the animals of their freedom? There's a reason they're called "domestic" animals. If humans hadn't bred those cows they would have never gotten a chance to exist. Hell their great grand parents probably wouldn't have had a chance to exist. Same with many breeds of horse, sheep, goats, dogs and cats. Domesticated animals would not exist today if humans hadn't bred them. It's not like they randomly went out to some wild cow reserve and stole the calves from the wild.

  • Seriously I don't approve of veal either. HOWEVER! I'm getting ever so sick of trying to find a single comment on farm animal videos that doesn't have to deal with vegans and vegetarians screaming how wrong we are. If you want to only eat plants, great. I'm going to stick with being an omnivore thank you very much. If you don't like the subject of the video just don't watch it, that simple. Complaining on youtube isn't the most productive way to "further the cause."

  • very clean barns. they are very healthy and adorable looking calves.

  • What a great video showing some very healthy, well looked after animals. I congratulate you for the thought, time and money you have obviously put in to this project. =)

  • Having been on "other" veal farms, that was more humane. They actually got to move about... they got to see the other calves and have interaction.... they got some sunlight.

Dairy industry is tough, no question. That is about as much humanity as the veal industry could possibly offer, if you are raising veal.

  • that guy grabbed the baby cow's tail at 0:58

  • These babies were stolen from their mothers so that humans can steal the milk that nature intended for them... These "veal" calves won't even see their first year of life on earth before they are butchered. How's that for "tender" meat? Go Vegan

  • Do people even use the crates anymore in the US. I can't see that being cost effective. I am going to go get some veal. It's been a wile since I have had any.

  • Talk about "cutting out the middle man" makes me think that I might as well drink milk replacer myself (soymilk, rice milk...) and leave the cows alone.

Any university level textbook on nutrition will tell you that none of this is necessary - and we'd all be better off without it. But any move toward more humane treatment of animals is a good one, so I hope this kind of thing catches on.

  • I think you are doing your best to help these calves fill their place in the food chain with as much dignity and comfort as possible. Thanks for your efforts.

  • That's one of the most screwed up things I've ever heard. Sentient beings are most dignified and comfortable not being treated like things, not being exploited and killed (& for no reason). Thanking a system like this is like thanking a child abuser for their "efforts" in abusing children less harshly, hitting them five times with a fist instead of six times with a club. It's pseudo-compassion. There's no such thing as "humane" or "compassionate" exploitation or violence. HumaneMythDOTorg.

  • so very true.

  • That automatic milk feeder is slick. If I had one of those and milk replacer was not so high I would make so serious coin. Anyone that sees a problem with this video is unrealistic on the human diet and food production. Those calves are in great health. This is a great video to show the truth about veal production.

  • This video makes me hate veal so much more...

  • I love being a vegan. The cows and I have an understanding, we're cool. I seriously hope you all realize one day how unhealthy and unnecessary meat and dairy is.

  • I am 100% happy to be vegan. I eat no eggs, no cheese, no milk, seafood, or any kind of flesh because of the abuse in killing and 'raising' these animals just for greedy human consumption.

  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with this at all, a very good set up - and far better than a lead injection. Fact.

  • "They are allowed outside for a few hours a day" How sad was that! They all run outside only to find themselves in another pen! No grass, so space to move freely....

  • Male bull calves would normally be euthanized minutes after birth. Our goal as veal farmers is to care for these animals and give them the best possible environment for them to thrive. I have a passion for the industry and I am always looking for new ideas as far as calf husbandry goes. We've added the start barn and outdoor pens recently and judging by our animals performance and attitude we will continue expanding this part of our operation. Your comments and ideas are always welcome.

  • This video is shows a particular barn in NY - It is not intended to reflect the whole "industry". So the Walt Disney comment could be taken as a compliment by this particular farming operation. If a farmer is worth anything he would make sure his calf gets "first milk" colostrum from its mother as to continue to get good prices. He needs to sell healthy vigorous calves to do this. Calves are not usually sold until at least 10 days old to veal farms.

  • The calves are lying on the floor because calves of this age usually sleep or lie for 20 hours or so a day naturally. They have a "happy hour" at around dusk where they run around either in this situation or in a completely natural setting.

  • Calves in group housing will only "moo" when they first arrive as they are hungry. With automatic feeding machines they are always full and content. As far as calf auctions etc. a lot of producers are buying farm direct in order to get a better calf and remove the middle man. Bigger operations will often have receiving barns where farmers will bring calves.

  • You have a number (governement assigned) and you will die too? THe calves wont be paying taxes though!

  • Oh please, as if my freedom in life is at all comparable to the lives of a veal calf. Their lives are created and destroyed by the hands of greedy men.

  • You are a consumer unit. To be an effective consumer unit, you need to work, sleep and consume products. When do you have time to live?

  • Though it is unexpected that one should actually live deliberately it is still their right to choose how to run their lives. It is their natural right-the right that "owners" of animals have stolen from billions of sentient creatures- The right to live independent of a ruler. They're robbed of freedom.

  • @jerrysproehlich lol humans are cool they cause death and destruction everywhere man isnt are race awsome!

  • Hardly any veal farmers do this!!! Becasue if one of the calfs get sick the rest of them in that pen will too!!!! REMEMBER : YOUR IF YOU EAT VEAL YOUR EATING A CALF THAT WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM HIS MOTHER RIGHT AFTER BIRTH AND MOST LIKLELY CHAIN UP IN A CRATE!!!

  • Calves have been raised in groups since 1981. The majority of calves in the USA are not raised like this yet but there is movement in this direction. As far as one calf making everyone else sick this is not true, speaking from 25 years experience in group housing. Also calves are tagged electronically so they can be recognized by the automatic feeder.

  • THe feeder can issue medication on an individual basis and also the calf's temperature read at the station by thermometer to help with early diagnosis.

  • There are no chains used to tether calves in Europe or in Canada. Some calves may be chained or tethereed in the USA as it makes housing cheaper for the family farmer.
