I own one of those vans. Its pretty scary every time that I take it out. They are extremely reliable vehicles, so I can't bring myself to scrap it. Its only flaw was it's inability to withstand a frontal offset impact. Other than that, its one of the safest vans given all of the tests at that time period. It has 250,000 miles on it now and still running strong. Its time will be up within the next three years.
That's a GOOD thing because the Accord has MORE airbags! The Venture lacks side curtain airbags, and the Accord's side curtain airbags deployed because it detected a lateral acceleration rate on the driver's side that told it to deploy. In other words, it did its job in protecting the driver's head.
Sorry whattheheck1000, but I have to correct you. It has nothing to do with the doors being hit or not. Sensors measure lateral forces on the car and deploy the side airbags if they exceed a certain threshold. This helps for example in rollover situations (where no impact is necessary) and even offset crashes like this. In many cars without side curtain airbags you can see the dummy hit their head on the door frame during rebound, because there is still sideways movement in this type of crash.
The curtain airbags might injure a child in the rear seat. The risk of that is very low compared to the risk of injury in a side impact, but too much to risk in a frontal. The curtain airbags may help a little in the frontal, but the deployment risks are not worth it.
Sorry to correct you again (I work as an automotive writer). The injuries you're talking about are from side airbags, not side CURTAIN airbags. Hondas actually do have sensors that deactive the SIDE airbag in side collisions if it detects a smaller statured adult or someone leaning into the deployment path. But because of the location of SIDE CURTAIN airbags and the manner in which they deploy, the risk of injury is very low in these types of deployments.
Hey tickle2012, I am a professional automotive writer, and do get the opportunity to sit down with engineers and discuss these very types of issues. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, however, after speaking with the engineers, I would have to side with them. Whattheheck's comment seems logical, but the reality is things are more complex than they appear. That said, yeah, the Venture's performance is pretty appalling!
i believe the side airbags deployed because of the rollover sensors, in some of the other tests with the accord, you can see the the accord had flipped on some of them.
And i remember reading about how the on the offset test of the venture, the dummies' metal foot broke off.
I think you might get more views if you have "crash test - accord verse Venture. but i guess the current title is more informative. anyhow, it's up to you.

WOW... Those vans are death traps. I would rather walk than ride in one of those. This looks almost identical to the IIHS's Trans sport

Accord deployed more airbags for the driver alone than the Venture deployed altogether. That is not good on the Accord.

The doors on that side were undamaged; the side airbags shouldn't have deployed.

WOAH
the venture's door opened
this test is faster than normal crash test speed and an offset
and still the accord does well! accord is fucking awesome! i want to see the new accord tested like this

this surely shows that the accord is a very safe vehicle
