what is it with so many shredders not actually using their pinky up in the higher frets??? good technique otherwise.

@mystique1721 theres not much room in the higher frets. paul gilbert does it in my opinion for 2 reasons: 1. he practiced doing it and accustomed to it. 2. he has slim fingers which make it physically alot easier. i use my pinky a lot less after the 17th fret, mainly only for bigger streches. but people tend to imitate what they see. someone sees a good guitarist playing something without pinky and then he does the same

It's really a matter of how you started practicing. If you were in the habit of using your pinky, then it will feel natural for you to use the pinky for even the higher frets. It's muscle memory. But the thing is, most guitar players never really practiced with their pinky much. So they simply don't apply it as much as they should. I mean, why waste the energy stretching your ring finger when your pinky is right above the fret it should play anyway? General rule: one finger per fret.

@mystique1721 yeah thats a good general rule for me until the 17th. but i dont think that you should take a rule such as that and rigorously force it in to your playing. i stop using pinky after the 17th simply because i find that i have too little room for using it. in different situations you are allowed to use logic so that you are able find a way that fits you the best. you shouldnt take every rule and restriction you see so seriously that you never dare to break them

yes, I agree with you. But I was just pointing out that the majority of players don't use their pinky as much as they should. I'm surprised that you yourself actually used it past the 12th fret. I think I'm on the same boat with you after the 17th fret though. It does get kinda squished over there.
