The real problem with this game's depiction is the fact that literally everything good HAS to come from central planning. Which makes the net cost of everything exponentially higher. Therefore, combating the adverse effects of sprawl may or may not save the environment, but it WILL destroy the economy.
My SC4 cities struggle to fight pollution, but have made some strides. However, their economies are barely sustainable.
This is not an urban sprawl. Sure it shows a small town growing into a town. There is a McDonalds. OMG Big deal. Urban sprawl is bad for the environment but it wouldnt be bad if the city would add more means of transportion so there wouldn't be as much air polution. BTW Urban Sprawl looks like a bunch of houses that are pretty much identical.
@mikejay007 Its part of urban sprawl because its not mixed-use. The problem with suburban transit is having less density (the suburban model) and is very costly. The more density per area the less it costs for transit, making it more viable. Otherwise, it puts a burden on the city; which is already paying for other things such as road infrastructure (including subsidizing parking). More dense, smaller areas allow transit to be more feasible, and reduces cost of road infrastructure.

That's not urban sprawl. Urban sprawl is low density and spread out. This is an example of a fairly high density town.
