I served in the Army for 21 years. What I do not understand is if you are fighting in a clearly mountainous region, Why do you send our brave men to establish a fort at the bottom of 4 mountaintops ? Do these so called mission planners have shit for brains? Apparently so because after being found guilty of negligence in planning the battle ( S-4 especially) They turned around and blamed the men who died , Both there leader and the men ! Sounds a lot like Vietnam to me !
US Army uses these awards ceremonies as propaganda and recruitment tools and hide the real problems. Let me ask you this - if the Army thinks these brave soldiers died serving their country, why are they blaming their dead commander 1LT Jonathan Brostrom for negligence? Fact is, they died cuz the Army failed to give them the resources needed to complete their mission. Look up the facts, and not just remember the heroes. What good are dead heroes when nothing was accomplished?
it's a tragedy that the army never assigned any blame for this predicted attack. I'd recommend reading the army's extensive lessons learned report and/or the WaPo's excellent interactive feature which includes video shot by Lt. Brostrum detailing just how vulnerable these guys were.
All the best to all who serve and have served in Iraq and Afghanistan and in particular to those who fought at Wanat. Your sacrifices will not be forgotten.
zedsdead: Thank you and everyone doing their part back home to help all the hero's that very much deserve what you and others like you do them and myself!
bless all of those who fought in wanat!!! its a damn shame cause they were 2 weeks from going home and they were ordered to wanat. god bless all of them!!!
People do care, I don't know where you get that first we only know what the news or internet tells us, 2nd think people on here have not lost family members. And last guess how many people I know do work to raise money and other ways to help Wounded Warrior program I have done hundreds of PT hours cashed in stocks to help most people just dont gloat.
The people of wanat are to blame for this dirty ambush,The ignorant goat fucking sub-human trash who backstabbed our troopers who bring medicine to their sick children and are suffering to try to provide them with a better life and a little freedom do not deserve it.
If i was the general of these heros i would order the troops to withdraw and then order a 24 hour NAPALM airstrike on the village without any warning.
In no way am I discounting what happened in Wanat, but the exemplary leadership described here, in this award ceremony for Chosen Paratroopers, is prevalent in the 2/503rd. 2nd Rock is the baddest battalion, no debate needed.
im taking note of where the general talks about the quality of NCO in the rock. Having served with them (hunter, I was with you in the korengal, I got blown up on december 27 along with murphree) I can honestly say nowhere else in the army will you find the types of teachers and leaders which i found when i served with the rock. Serving with them will always be the thing i am most proud of.
Hey GohModley. I take it you served in the military at some point? Did you ever serve with the 173d? If so were you at the battle of Wanat? Im going to go ahead and assume your answer would be now. If you werent there you dont know. Take it from me I was in the 173d for both Afghan tours and a small stint in Iraq. Uncle J is right politics. Especially your politics belong else where.
I very rarely boot someone for comments. Goh Modley just added himself to a short list. I know nothing about him other than his claim to have been wounded in the war on terror. He has shown a disrespectful, BS attitude toward those who have served honorably and he is booted. Dissent is one thing, shitting on honorable people is another.
Sure would have been nice if Bushy-boy did what his dad did and actually do his Constitutionl duty by asking Congress for a declaration of war rather than for a blank check for an illegal war. It's an awful precedent begun by Truman and it needs to stop if our republic hopes to stay intact.
If you wanna bitch about Bush or other shit do it elsewhere. Make one more disrespectful comment here and I will bounce you. This is about troops serving honorably, politics belong elsewhere.
You have proved your ignorance and stupidity. I served plenty, I also run this site via my first amendment rights, yours don't apply here. Feel free to exercise your first amendment rights at your own site.
lol, tell me how that makes any sense. typical right-wing response. if someone disagrees with a war they have to leave America. what a conformist you are.
You are an asswipe! Its one thing to be bitter because you ate your way out of the Army; disappointed other soldiers; and have yet to satisfy a woman but don't label these men "war criminals". Look, the US government (Senators voted to approve it and President ordered it) sent them to do a job and they did it with honor. Now go back to playing with yourself in Mom and Dad's basement.
hey asshole I have four fucking metal pins in my right knee but I would gladly do it all over again because the flag we where on our right shoulder is worth more then my life or yours it is a flag i would gladly die for so don't give me that bullshit you know damn well what you enlisted into Hooah you fucking shitbag
Way to go Michael! I'm sorry I couldn't make it, but I am so proud of you and love you so much! Thank you for your sacrifice and those of your unit that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country!

It's really comforting to know that 99% of America is drunk on life and not paying one bit of attention outside their own selfishness.
God Bless My Brothers. May they rest in peace.

Actually to be fair, the people of Wanat did try to warn about the possible ambush and to shoot anyone they see in the mountains.
Also you can't blame them for the retaliation when the helicopter did killed 15 of their people and their entire doctors.

I'm pretty sure it was 15, although I wasn't able to stick around for all of it. A couple rounds of Taliban 7.62 had different plans for me.
