Can someone explain to me whats the big deal about diesel engines compared to petrol (gasoline) engines. Top Gear , 5th Gear, and even FLD seem to be always excited about diesel engines. I know its a different fuel and its a bit expensive compared to regular gasoline. So whats the difference? what does it do to the engine which a regular Gas can't?
Its a different technology, in europe, diesel is cheaper compared to normal petrol. You get way better milage on diesel engines and good torque. But it generates more pollution (which is why it has additional filters in the exhaust)
Personally, I prefer gasoline over diesel any day!
oh, and a regular diesel engine is slow... you need a turbo (TDI) for it to become interesting....

In europe the trend is now to do turbo's on petrol engines too, so we have a 1,2 liter TSI that pops out 105 BHP a 1,2 liter diesel doesn't come close, even with a turbo.

Can somebody explain me the problem of Americans with diesel cars? The Germans make turbo diesel engines as good as good the petrol ones, if your not going to set a lap time, diesel is brilliant for everything else, for example to take your kids to school our to go to the mall not to mention MPG, a tank of diesel in Audi A4 will last you forever... and if you want something with a bit of speed go for a BMW 535D.
@shadman1911 American here. I have no problem with diesels. I think they are superior in many ways to petrol. That said, I love my fast v8 petrols, but as a daily driver? Diesel is fucking awesome.

Every diesel lover praises their HUGE torque, that only exists between 2000-2500rpm, but when it comes to go fast, they just go for the Higher revs between 3500-4500, were is less torque.... so what is that torque all about? it is so good but you dont' want it?
@weed46 i don't really understand your post, but i'll try to comment anyway. the torque is great for everyday driving. you can accelerate briskly at low rpms, which is where you normally are on public roads. also, the M57 has 265 hp, so when you do need the top end power, it still has some. it's hard to explain, but my main point is that torque is great for everyday driving.

Audi Diesel (TDI). In my opinion is the future of cars. I know it has alot of issues but most of those are things that can be resolved. Diesel is cleaner, easier to find and make. It costs slightly more but only because it is not mass produced. I really hope well see a rise in Diesel over the next few years. I am glad to see a nice diesel car on here! : ) makes me happy. i get happy over diesel. diesel makes me happy.

@weed46 thats the old diesel. The new diesel (TDI) is significantly lighter, not loud at all. That loud diesel is only from the trucks components in big-rigs that they use with the diesels in fords and stuff. normal diesel is just as quiet. There are some articles you should read about the new diesel. You would be pretty right about the diesel from big-rigs though. it is loud and heavy. Happy Dieseling : )
@adulby What are you talking about? do you know how and engine works? Diesel make their power based on torque, so if you have a lot of torque, you will need a very strong engine block and transmission, and making those stronger means that you will need more metal, or a metal that's stronger, wich means it will be heavier....

@adulby They are more economical... that's it... with the same amount of fuel, they can create more amount of energy, but cannot create as fast as the petrol engines.... A petrol engine is about 3 to 4x more powerfull than a diesel...
The reason why diesels burn less fuel is because diesel can suport a higher compression tax, producing more torque lower on the revrange, and because diesel liquid is 10% more energectical than petrol... and I din't saw any documentary, i know just why...
@adulby The future of cars? I'm not sure. Diesels have had a lot of R&D put into them to make them clean enough for current emissions standards, but at those continue to get tougher and tougher who knows what will happen to diesel engines. It's probably why Honda and several other automakers have foregone their plans to bring those engines to US. Hydrogen is a ways away, but I think it's the future.
@Windgrace I would say hydrogen is very promising but it is very far out. It is so expensive right now it will be impossible to get it off th ground for a long time. I am not saying it isnt "the future" but not the very near future. I also dont blame Honda and other companies pulling Diesel of of US. The emmision standards are pretty bad here. Diesel innovations have reduced up to 80% of the detrimental emmisions from Diesel exhaust in the last 30 years. And that is very promising.

@bloodgulch1 Mustangs have some of the best value and reliability per horsepower. You can get a GT so cheap it's crazy. They look and sound great, unlike most cars out there for the same price. Find me something under 10k that is as fast and cool looking as a Mustang, because I have yet to see anything.
bringing the diesels to the US will definitely help audi gain more sales, and hopefully push people out of their old audis so i can get one of the 2nd gen A4s

I have a feeling we're not going to see all the US auto providers (American and foreign) really start to get heavily into diesel until all those MPG mandates start kicking in. There's no point in them showing the best MPGs they have to offer just yet because if they do the government might just raise the "average MPG requirement" thingy again to something even higher. That's just my philosophy, because otherwise...we'd probably already have those super high MPG diesels they have over in Europe

@bloodgulch1 Mustangs have some of the best value and reliability per horsepower. You can get a GT so cheap it's crazy. They look and sound great, unlike most cars out there for the same price. Find me something under 10k that is as fast and cool looking as a Mustang, because I have yet to see anything.

If ford really wanted the fiesta to be a rally car they would release an AWD boosted version of it, as a sports car the fiesta is half assed in true ford fashion, just like the live rear axle in the mustang or the econobox brakes on the SHO

actualy there is a concept of audi R8 V12 TDI, and despite beeing a diesel its quite nice with the 6,0l engine 500bhp and 1000 Nm(google how much pound feet is it), the same enigine is alredy mounted to top of the line Q7 ;)

I have a feeling we're not going to see all the US auto providers (American and foreign) really start to get heavily into diesel until all those MPG mandates start kicking in. There's no point in them showing the best MPGs they have to offer just yet because if they do the government might just raise the "average MPG requirement" thingy again to something even higher. That's just my philosophy, because otherwise...we'd probably already have those super high MPG diesels they have over in Europe
