Louis was a nervous young man who panicked at the thought of girls. Marie's charm terrified him, he wanted to be alone most of the time. They were opposites. Marie was very naive with a lot of pressure put on her. She became a target for politics in a country she knew nothing of. She had various troubles with her marriage and belonging to a foreign court. You'd feel pretty awkward too. Imagine yourself marrying a stranger in another country at fourteen. Then be expected to fix everything wrong.
they make her life seem so fun, True yet. however, the real story of Queen Marie Antoinette of her first impression of *prince* Loiuse XVI was disgust and shock. He was fat, ugly, and rude. Here, he displays as something very good-looking. And the rest,im not sure..she was at the end executed for the poor citizens and stuff... Loiuse XVI was also involved in gambling, thus he was also executed. they ruled poorly due to lack of education, and they both didnt care anything else besides
@Antibearvirus - it was never implied that they did escape beheading they just never show it happen. The film is about what happened and why it happened, everyone knows they were beheaded.
Marie was a teenage girl becoming a queen! You better believe I'd be partying every night. And even if she ever was promiscuous, it wouldn't be her fault that Louis wouldn't fuck her. haha.
she gave birth to 4 children with Louis VXI, but she also gambled and was into fashion and the money world, the real story - not sure about sex and everything, im pretty sure King Louis would've gotten her executed already. Though she did party ALOT
I don't understand people's complaints about the historical facts, i mean you do understand your watching a Hollywood film not a documentary? Its not meant to be historically accurate necessarily. Obviously they shouldn't stray too far from historical accuracy, which this movie didn't, it was a very creative representation of the queen.
@ashellokitty I'd say it's a pretty clear choice of the director. Most of the movie, she tried to communicate that Marie was just a simple teenage kid who had the world thrusted onto her shoulders. You throw a fake accent up there, and suddenly there is an obstacle of reliability.
@ashellokitty Because in reality, none of them would be speaking English in the first place. The movie takes place in 18th century France. It's a bit ridiculous to insist that the actors put on fake English accents then, don't you think? American, English . . . neither of them are more "legit" than the other in this movie, lol.
Anyone remember that part in the movie where Marie is thinking about Axel de Fernal? He was all epic on a horse with an explosion in the background! Anyone got a picture of that scene?
Today i just watched the 3 Musketeer and i just remembered about this movie which i watched 4 years ago! Well, of course it's very different, but the sense's still the same..! hahahaha
I hate movies that turn history into Hollywood!!! and Marie Antoinette with an American accent is just too much for me!! Ridiculous. I didn't see it and never will!
@ImTotallySummer I watched the trailer once and a couple of other extracts from the film. This is what allowed me to form an opinion, you have to watch something before you can give your opinion on it,seems pretty obvious! There is much more than "plain old" documentaries out there. I wonder what you would you think about a movie with a George Washington that had an Austrian, German or French accent though for example? You'd probably think it was ridiculous. Well it works both ways. :)
@nopseudosleft56 im sorry i didnt form my comment in a clear way to what i meant to say. and i know what you commented, its ok you didnt need to restate it. straight forward: you dont have to be on this video since you hate the movie
@ImTotallySummer Straight forward : I didn't actually know that I didn't like the movie until I actually watched this video. I didn't come back to it I just watched it this once and commented. Do you see what I mean? I'm not trying to "torture" myself by coming back to it and watching it ten times , I only saw it once. But never mind, this is a completely pointless discussion lol! lets just agree to disagree lol! have a good day :)
@ImTotallySummer But why shut things out just because you don't like them? I often return to trailers for crappy films to see if I hate them less. *shrug*
@omonamag personal attacks are unintelligible and very common-place maybe you should give that up. Im interested to know how many 'humans' u know and how diverse the range is. In my experience I know groups of ppl who are similar - none are the same. These terms are subjective and this movie has a very subjective angle and therefore we need to apply its def in this context. Are u familiar with platos theory 'ppl see only their own flaws in others'? Maybe you struggle with your own juvenility?
Is it just me, did anyone else want to just hug the crap out of the Louis XVI in this movie? I don't get why Marie Antoinette would have wanted to cheat on him so badly. This Louis was such a sweet and nice guy
Why is everyone complaining about how the American accents make this movie historically inaccurate or bad? Even if the actors had the English accents everyone so desperately wants, it wouldn't be historically accurate anyway because the characters are French.
Also, since when did having an American accent "ruin" a potentially great movie? There are lots of brilliant movies where the actors have American accents but the movie is set in Europe (eg. Amadeus).
To those who criticised the film for not being historically accurate,
Go read a goddamn book. That's why we have history books. Tons of them. Get your lazy asses down to your local library, or look it up online, and splurge over all the historical facts and accounts you desire and stop expecting to learn everything there is to know about the world from a 120 minute movie. If you actually look to movies to teach you anything about reality than you are in serious need of a reality check -__-'
I never said the movie was historically accurate. That's exactly my point: The trailer made it obvious what we could expect from the movie, yet people going still came out complaining about the style, even though it was clear that the movie would be taking a lot of artistic liberties with the source material. Last time I checked, that was not a crime. It's the director's interpretation of the events. She was focussing on Marie Antoinette's age, aimed at a modern audience.
@EnigmaDrath Yes, you're completely right (and sorry, I misinterpreted your original comment). I just don't think that the artistic liberties taken did the movie any favours.
@EnigmaDrath Who's to say movies cannot be educational? You? Alow me to laugh... Movies are just another way to tell a story throught scenery rather then a book, just because you can't come to the realization that movies can be educational doesn't mean that the rest of the people will think the same.
Movies can be educational, but due to the running time they are usually condensed and leave out many details, and are not proper substitutes for the knowledge found in books. My comment was directed at the idiots complaining about the liberties this movie took with history. There is no law that says that movies have to be 100% accurate, and yet people still seem puzzled and annoyed when movies choose to take a different approach to the facts.
@EnigmaDrath I can accept movies takin' liberties, but keep in mind: This movie is flat out inaccurate.
Antoinette didn't escape the angry mob, she got her head chopped off.
When you have a movie called freakin' "Marie Antoinette" you kind of expect it to sustain somewhat of a credible story arc in relation to the source material.
They could've easily showed a couple of minuted of beheading, at least that would've made it somewhat more accurate.
@Antibearvirus In the end of the the movie, they do not escape, they are taken to the Tiulieres fortress in Paris, where they stay until they are moved to the Temple. Louis XVI is executed, and Marie Antoinette is taken to the Conciergie and then killed. I don't think they wanted to show the beheading in the movie because it would be too graphic or something. But I agree, they cold have at least have her climbing the steps to the guillotine.
@EnigmaDrath Well, movies that are either based off of historical events or are labeled as historical films generally do try to be as historically accurate as possible. So when a period/historical film comes along that isn't very accurate, some won't like it. Also, people who like historical films don't watch them to be educated on the era because they already are. They watch them because history is awesome and juicy. Though, I personally don't mind inaccuracies if the film is good.
i don't mind that the movie had american accents. the accents didn't take away the beauty, hardships, charm, and misery of what was Maire Antoinette and also a beautiful performance by Kristen Dunst.
I bet a lot of you have no idea that Marie Antoinette was the one who tried to save her family, from mad men who were cruel and selfish. She didn't nothing wrong, and if I was alive back then, I would've stood by her side, no matter what happened to me. Because she was a woman who was strong, not like all the prostitutes she was made out to be.
Its horrible I agree with you that her children were taken away from her.
But in all seriousness everyones crying about her when there where so many people during the whole french history who suffered while the aristocrats stuffed themselves.
There where super rich people and then super poor.
Didnt you learn about feudalism in 6th grade?
I'm not saying she deserved this but I understand why it happened.
Everyone is complaining about the lack of accents and how it doesn't seem historical enough. The movie was not meant to be heavily historical, it was meant to show the more personal, vulnerable, emotional side of the life of Marie Antoinette. Sofia Coppola (Director) wanted the movie to have the feel of "today" so people could appreciate what she went through more. She thought if it was too historical it would be too dark or moody. If you don't like don't watch! I loved it <3
@TheAlexandraBela EXACTLY, it wasn't trying to be historically accurate, I loved how it told the story, and would much rather watch it, then any other period piece that would most likely have stiff music, and boring performances.
its weird cuz when I first saw it I was very dissapointed, cuz I wanted it to be more historical & have more action and ...well have more of a story.....
but now in retrospect, I can watch it now, and see that its perfect just the way it is. sophia coppolla movies are all about "mellow mood's" and creating "dream like films"
Her story is so tragic. People really did pin alot on them. mastercheif158 is right. Also, there were alot of false accusations toward the two. People blamed Marie for raping children, and blamed her for all of the money she spent. At the time, they had forgotten that they were in a time of war and money was also going to their troops.
my mom invited me to an opera...i was like yea ok. so then i watched marie antoinette...problem solved. and she went back to gambling with her friends.
Fun Fact of the Day: The real reason it took Louis XVI 7 years to 'give it to' Marie Antoinette was because he had phimosis, an inability to retract the foreskin. He only consummated his marriage after having (painful) 18th century knob surgery. Still, probably a good idea it was left out of the film...
If the french ever decide to reestablish their monarchy I'd like to be apart of it. x3 It would be my dream lifestyle to just eat decadent desserts, have parties, and drink alot.
I dont think a lot of people understand that one of the points of film is to be able to romanticize a certain period in time or person's life. This isnt a biopic, its just meant to be entertainment. I personally love history, but I also romanticize certain eras in my writing.
Did you know A&E Bio, does not have Marie Antoinette's bio on there web site. I remember in the 90's when A&E used to show it all the time. I would like to see her bio in English!! I don't want to read her bio I want watch it!!!
@gluthe01 Actually I think it's kind of funny that the older people, the adults, have the strict, stern British accents, while the fun loving teenagers, MA being one of them, have American accents. It's kind of like rock and roll versus classical music you know?
@equestriansheridan I agree. She portrayed her story in such a beautiful way, and with Sofia's special print. I loved it. Who cares about the critics!
Where can i find a free version of this whole movie?? Any safe sites??

German because she was from Austria.
But then again maybe she spoke french at home all the time.

And even if she didnt she probably spoke french well enough not to have an accent.
Anyways french or german.

I loved it <3
TheAlexandraBela 5 months ago 99
@TheAlexandraBela EXACTLY, it wasn't trying to be historically accurate, I loved how it told the story, and would much rather watch it, then any other period piece that would most likely have stiff music, and boring performances.

@TheAlexandraBela Me tooo , I totally agree with you! Marie Antoinette is my new favourite movies !!<3

@TheAlexandraBela
its weird cuz when I first saw it I was very dissapointed, cuz I wanted it to be more historical & have more action and ...well have more of a story.....
but now in retrospect, I can watch it now, and see that its perfect just the way it is. sophia coppolla movies are all about "mellow mood's" and creating "dream like films"

Fashion repeats itself over the years and things that were once ''in'' are coming right back... too bad 18th century dresses never do <3 ^^

@gluthe01 Actually I think it's kind of funny that the older people, the adults, have the strict, stern British accents, while the fun loving teenagers, MA being one of them, have American accents. It's kind of like rock and roll versus classical music you know?
