Sagan already answered your question sufficiently. Much evidence from the DNA of organisms living today suggests that all of these organisms are related. We share an ancestor with trees, but it is very, VERY distant. As Sagan's simple explanation of the evolution of life on Earth showed, plants branched off from the organisms that would become humans fairly early in the tree of life.
it's sad that retards like bieber and lady gaga get viewed millions of times by young people, but these amazing informative videos only get thousands. we need to get our priorities straight and put some sense in the ignorant heads of the youth
I WISH CARL SAGAN COULD HAVE STUCK AROUND A FEW MORE MONTHS TO SEE THE MARS ROVER CRUISING AROUND ON MARS. HE WOULD HAVE LOVED THAT. I CAN SEE HIM GRINNING AND JUMPING UP AND DOWN--LIKE I DID.

Not true. Natural selection would, on an Earth-like planet, adapt lifeforms to suit their earth-like environment. And thus alien Earths would probably have something we'd call a fish and that looks reasonably like a fish for example. It's possible an alien Earth has a fish that swims like a whale. But it wouldn't have a fish that swims like a brick. Those wouldn't survive to reproduce well.
Alien life will be different, but recognizable I think.
On Earth, creatures tend to be shaped the way they are for a reason after all. So on another Earth some of those shapes, or other effective shapes along the same lines will arise through natural selection. It's only logical.
Now if life arises on a NON-Earth like world it might be another story... If such a thing is possible of course. It may not be.
@Shavarnarak I agree with you, but they could still be very different in form. Think of the disappearence of dinosaurs, if it wasn't for that meteor (probably), earth-like crearures today would probably look more "lizardly" and very different. I think there are also lots of different ways life can survive. Think also of a planet with different attributes, for example a different gravity force, that could lead to things we have never seen here, similar, but certainly different in many ways
@GiLligEN It's not even about being smart, not everyone can be smart. I can honestly admit I don't have a massive intellect; I struggle to grasp the theory of relativity and I find that quantum mechanics is beyond my comprehension for the most part. I do however have a burning curiosity and a mind capable of skeptical inquiry. That's all one needs to begin to appreciate the true beauty of the universe.
I lie, i'm a four year student of mathematics/astrophysics, but hopefully I'll end up being an research astrophysicist!
The beauty about astronomy is that you don't have to be a scholar to awe and fixate on the immense beauty, the unsurpassed elegance; and innately humbling power of the heavens!
Carl Sagan died of pneumonia technically... but I don't know if it would have killed him if he hadnt battled for a good length with myelodysplasia... he had 3 bone marrow transplants.
Mayo clinic "..in the various myelodysplastic syndromes, the orderly and controlled production of cells fails at the most fundamental level — that of the stem cells. The immature cells are often defective, and instead of developing normally, they die in the bone marrow or just after entering your bloodstream..."
usually in those type of diseases, leukemia and even myelodysplasia (some hematologist oncologist regard it as a leukemia) you either die from bleeding or infection. it seems like you know what you are talking about, im just saying this to act smart.
anyway, its terrible because this man is just the realest. if i had a chance to meet him , i would not say i word, i would just listen.
"Assemble themselves" obviously there is an error in the words he used and is not implying that point. However, what randomness cause the organic material to combine to form life?
What is sad about this part of this episode is that the experiment demonstrated in this video that Sagan worked on is said to have caused his cancer that killed him. The vessel of nucleic acids that is created contains many carcinogens that Sagan was unfortunately exposed to. Sad.
Well, yeah you're right; technically he died from pneumonia which killed him due to immune system weakness from myelodysplasia, a rare form of bone cancer. His rare form of bone cancer was said to have been possibly caused by numerous trials of the experiment demonstrated in this video.
I'm not sure why nucleic acid could be a carcinogen. And carcinogen only cause cancer if your exposed to them for a length of time. Just one exposure isn't enough.
I wish there was an updated version of this show on TV right now, it be nice to see all the updated theories and progress made since the 80's. Instead we get shitty reality tv shows.
tell me why this kind of stuff doesn't have millions of viewers? Doesn't even break 10000 views. goes to show you where humans stand towards knowledge. So sad. truly sad:(
Carl rocks. i could trip out on anything and get blown away by this stuff. hahahahahaha.
See the number of views on sexual related clips. That is our primary biological role by the way, maybe that is the answer why only small percent of people are interested in scientific clips.
Those are some SERIOUS chops!
