LOL yes Ruapehu is actually the mountain hidden behind Ngauruhoe. Ngauruhoe was "Mt Doom" and is visible in the last part of your shot on the right. Ruapehu was never in your picture.
Both mountains were used, actually. If I remember correctly, the scenes at the end of "Return of the King" when Frodo and Sam are climbing Mount Doom, Mount Ngauruhoe was used. They were not allowed to film the summit of it because it is sacred to the Maori in the area. Both mountains were indeed used, however.
Gosh I dont even remember writing that last comment. What I meant was visually on the movie it was Mount Naguruhoe you were seeing as the Doom thing. Thanks for your info anyway also I am of maori descent from the area and live only 20 mins away, so I know they are Tapu.
Oh thats cool. I havnt done the crossing but have heard and seen pics of the crater lakes and they are amazing. Well it is the most Beautiful part of the country if I do say so myself lol.
@AngelofMusic2006 Really? Maori...They annoy the hell out of me. Since they are so special they get everything their way. They just sit at home and get money for doing nothing. It really is pathetic.

My friend and I are visiting New Zealand next year, and we plan on doing the one-day hike at the Tongariro Crossing. I'm very excited. :)
