  • Thank u for the amazing lesson!! Helped me learn

  • I have a harry potter wizard chess set

  • what about them little bald headed bitches

  • VERY GOOD

  • my chess set is gray and silver! FUCK!

  • Would be better if rank and file are marked in the video.

  • What about the kings or queens

  • thank you so much, I promised a little boy at the hospital where I volunteer that I would learn chess to be able to play with him tomorrow!!

  • why is your voice so deep

  • thank you so uch thank you cuz i never grt how to play it :D i really thank you ^^

  • Chess is a great game, but in my opinion it's 1000xtimes better when you play it on an actual board, instead of on the internet.

Able to look at your opponent, try to throw them off in different ways, if you play chess over the internet then you're missing out on a lot that the game has to offer.

  • CHESS TAKES A LOT OF BRAINS TO LEARN. I USED TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT. NOT MUCH BUT SOME. AND I WOULD ALWAYS PLAY CHESS AT LUNCH TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL. I WISH I COULD LEARN IT AGAIN.

  • GREAT VIDEO IT HELPED ALOT

  • i have wierd peiecs

  • Chess is like to be in a war! is an excellent game! well it´s not a game it´s a strategy tablet!

  • great videos cheers from australia . i cant wait to play.

  • it seems racist that white pieces get to always go first... lol

  • @FireJon145 Jesus said "The first shall be last".

  • @FireJon145 And it would't be racist if it was black first...

  • @Comhead1234 nothing but double standards when it come to racism.

  • @aslambhai123211 That's completely false. Anybody can learn chess, and anybody can become a strong player. I would say that it takes both talent and a tremendous amount of work to become a master (2200+), but that's the only exception.

  • @grobchess AMEN!!! I have no chess talent and I'm AMAZING at chess...so I've been told.

  • @grobchess I beg your pardon but, I'm new to chess and how many points you get for winning and you get deducted from losing?

  • @aslambhai123211 well u can learn the rules and then the strategies later on but it does require talent also.

  • @aslambhai123211 Idiot.

  • Hope u have more videos....:)

  • 5:11 I would never choose to be a queen!

  • Most of this info is substantial.

  • practise practice practise

  • This helps me a lot! Thanks!

  • can a pawn only go to the position where the rook is? or can it go anywhere along that row.

  • @Mangobitz anywhere along that row

  • Chess is a racist game!!!

  • @SultanaDaniel Yeah, and walking down a zebra? You have to walk on all lines don't you.

  • isn't it called a "castle" not a "rook"

  • @gamecubeable It can be called either a rook OR a castle

  • @1621148Revenge I've never heard an experienced player refer to it as a castle. I believe it's akin to calling the knight a "horse".

  • @grobchess

    XD Well suit yourself...

Perhaps its the "Castling" technique that causes people to refer to the rook as a castle

  • @grobchess it is called a castle. As a knight is a horse. As the bischop sometimes is referred to a walker. It depends.

  • @Arthounot You may call the pieces whatever you please, but that doesn't make it the proper terminology. You will not find any experienced player ever refer to them in this way. Want to prove me wrong? Show me an interview or game analysis where a Grandmaster refers to the pieces as castles, rooks, or walkers (and it can't be from poor translation).

  • @grobchess What is the proper terminology. I am sorry to have offended you if i did. In my opinion the 1-line from (white) left to right is called, rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook....

A castle, is more a move. like Castling? Short or long?

Sorry to offend you,m it was not my purpose.

  • @Arthounot Castle (or castling) is absolutely the name of a move, but not a piece. The proper terminology is exactly as you have written. I'm not offended, per say, but I do consider myself a fiery advocate for the actual names of the pieces :)

  • @grobchess So, how are the names calles in the old Shaturanga? Or in Chinese Chess (with the river)? Or Japanese (where you can parachute pieces?)

  • @Arthounot I really couldn't tell you. I've never played any of those games. Most of the board games I play are of the commercial variety (Cranium, Settlers of Catan, Risk, Monopoly).

  • @grobchess The original chess play mythology surrounds a river called Xiangi... In the earlier examples it was about crossing a river, and the kings were not allowed to see eachother (vertically) It is fun to play, it onvolves elephants, and guns, who have to leap over another piece. Shaturanga is different. Chess seemed tio have evolved from that. I made my own Shaturanga set, it's easy, and fun to make.

Xiangqi comes close... ;) Wiki it.

  • Well... I am from Holland, we have this line-up... Pion=pawn. Rook=Toren(tower), Knight=Paard(horse), Bischop=loper (walker), Queen=Dame (Lady), King (koning=king)

  • @Arthounot As you are multi-lingual, I don't think I need to tell you that some things translate better than others. I'm not arguing that the word for bishop in another language isn't the same as walker or that a knight in Armenia translates as a horse. My contention is merely that in English, these are the proper names for the pieces.

  • @grobchess I agree...but still it's worth the effort to look where these pieces and its names come from. For example, quite astonishinng that the elephant morfed into 'our' Rook.

  • @Arthounot sorry Elephant=Bishop.

  • @grobchess Maybe i went too fast through this film, and didn't take the details in that much in, most of it seemed qite obvious, again...

  • @Arthounot If you've played chess before, this all should be very obvious. This set of three videos is for people that have NEVER played the game before. The more advanced material is in subsequent lectures (Strategy and Combinations, Advanced Strategy and Combinations, Becoming a Chess Merchant, etc.). Thanks for watching, regardless.

  • Hello,

Can you recommend me where to play online with others or any software I could play and practice? I know the rules and stuff but I'm a beginner and have a huge lack of experience on actually playing.

  • @7Mushrooms7 I would recommend the Free Internet Chess Server. You can create a user name or play anonymously. Either way, there are tons of people online at all times and there's a wide range of skill levels. I would not recommend Pogo or Yahoo or other such sites.

  • @7Mushrooms7 chess.com is pretty fun.

  • if there is 2 pieces in the way of a knights movement can the knight take both? or whatever piece. No matter how many pieces r in the way of the peices movement can it take all of the ones in the path? or only take the piece on the piece's landing square?

  • @Electragirl5 The knight only takes the piece on the one square that it lands on.

  • Well Ive enter this Chess Competition and it happens in Feb 11th and the stupid thing is that i have never played chess before since i am a noob

And remembering the pieces and knowing where to move it is kinda hard....

  • @ILSTAL I'd recommend first watching these videos, and then playing a lot of games online. Chess certainly isn't something you can master in a day, but you can do quite a bit in the two weeks that you have.

  • @grobchess Thanks for the advice ive watched all 3 parts of How to play chess im gonna watch you other chess vids later

And Thank you for making these great chess vids

  • @ILSTAL You're quite welcome. Thanks for watching!

  • im trying to be productive with my spare time and learn new things, i learnt the elements song and now im trying to learn chess, this is much harder! so many things to remember =S i now appreciate the people who play chess and the masters of the game!

  • @prettyreckless270 It certainly is a discipline that takes a lot of time to master. It is often said that it takes 10 years to truly become an expert in any field, and chess is no exception. I'm glad that you've started along the path, however.

  • Can Knights make a backward L eg can they move both left and right? Can all pieces but the Pawns move backwards and forwards? when you take a piece can you continue through that piece and take another square or do you have a stop and take that piece?

  • @TheLastFraudster Knights can go backwards and to both sides. All pieces except pawns can go in either direction. When you take a piece, you stop on that square. The only exception is the knight, which is able to jump over pieces (but they still only take things where they land).

  • Im sticking to checkers.

  • @WinkieKid You should try new things but if you want to, that's fine too. It's acuatially not that hard.

  • @WinkieKid ME 2 haha

  • i love this game i play it with my aunty u know john cena is my father

  • oh! i thought there were three colors

  • can the bishops move left and right and straight up? my guess is no because it would have the chance to land on black if it started on white =/

  • @FlowerPerplex and so are you

  • Chess is boring.

  • OMG the world scene is one big chess game! We have the white pope, the so called Good Countries and then we have a Black Pope (Jesuits) and the so called Bad countries. man this is something!

  • does the bishop have to stick to its original diagonal? ie, once it hits the wall is it pretty much done?

  • what the fuck this is such a waste of time

  • i want to get red and white so its like alice in wonderland lol

  • how does the king move and the queen?

  • i taught myself chess when i was 13 using vista's chess titan. I'm the best in my class! :D

  • Why does the queen look like the kings crown? This game is so confusing

  • ohh i love chess dont get this the wrong way but i see it as a war with my opponent where you need strategies and traps to win and for that i love it

  • Considering the fact that it's based off of war, that would make sense.

  • i joined a chess club and pretended and pretended i couldplay chess, well, now i can

  • it was in 1994 right after me and me dad had finished watching Point Break. He had more input than me. We sold the idea to a pawn shop. felt like right kings.

  • its called google

  • It was Invented in ancient India the called Chaturanga. There are more moves than all the grain of sands in this world

  • @thomas9504 oh Lol. thx

  • @thevideoman9 this type of chess is the european chess which is developed from indian/chinese chess(almost copy) but using staunton chess set(i preffer lewis chess set,but this is clasic)

  • @thevideoman9

    Persians I think

  • @thevideoman9 the sibling of the checkers inventor

  • @thevideoman9

chess was invented by an indian ................. i don't know his name...

  • @thevideoman9

    some bored old guys...

  • @thevideoman9 it has many routes but mainly the Egyptians started out the first form of chess as a war tactic. The Indians(not native Americans the Asian ones) reformed it into a game style, and than the Germans made it into the game we all know today.

  • @thevideoman9 some say the chinese, some say the indians (asian) and some say someone else. its a very old game, and versions of it were played all over asia and europe

  • @thevideoman9 Somebody Very Brilliant And Very Bored!!!

  • @thevideoman9 arabs did, actually.

  • @thevideoman9

It originated in India (note: the current world champion is from India!) with pieces that resembled humans. It later became popular in Persia, (This is Sparta!!! lol) where the pieces where modified to look less human like. hence, the 8 little soldiers turned into 8 little pawns. As the game spread across the world, the pieces abilities changed as well transforming it to what we now refer to as, chess! :)

  • @thevideoman9 james comroy duhh !!!!

  • @thevideoman9

Chess was like Poker a long time ago in medieval times, Kings would bet on it if they lost the other person ussally got to keep there daugther

  • @thevideoman9 go wiki c? LOL!

  • @thevideoman9

Dunno, but I do know that the german name for chess 'Schach' comes from the persian word 'Shah' (=king), as chess was the game of the kings. Also, the far east invented 'Shogi' which is in many ways similiar to chess.

  • here's a little joke. 9 queens mean get lucky.

  • you so long

  • actually, I don't understand anything about it. why are the little ones on the front are called pawns when all the thingies are pawns? can I jump you on a single square?
