  • hahahahaha....i didn't understand anything :3

  • Excellent tutorial, I sure picked up a few things from it (though I'm a novice movie maker). Love your vids BTW. And one more thing, how much does it cost for all the software used to make this? I'd get it for free, but I hate piracy. And just one last question; How much experience have you had with making these kinds of videos, 'cuz I'm going to need a lot at my age.

  • @SonicStarArmy After Effects CS5 is around $1000, and Photoshop (I use 7, so it's probably very cheap if you can even find it) is about $700.

I have many years of Photoshop experience, which carries over relatively well into AE, but you still need a basic knowledge of animation. I recommend getting into photomanipulation, and trying to put something in a picture that isn't there, but making it look like it is. Doing that in AE is pretty much the same, except it's motion.

  • @navybrony

O_o, I'm not going to be making these kinds of videos any time soon. I don't have a job, nor am I the legal age to get one. And I'd have to save up 100 weeks worth of allowance to even have a chance at getting it. And that's just for After effects, it'd be 170 weeks total to get Photoshop with it.

Hmm, I see. Okay. I have a little bit of experience with GIMP 2.6 and I can mask photos fairly well. I've made a few Stop-Motion Animations, does that qualify for something?

  • @navybrony nice vid dude it tought me alot about AFE,hey uh do you have a skype account if so hears my name,bronydr1 hit me up bro.

  • WHAT!? It does not exist for real!?

  • I Recommand Using Vegas And Paint NET Because I Don't Have The Money To Get Both Photoshop And After Effects.

  • How did you make it so when you use the brush tool your dots auto-connect? My gosh, primitive question but I can't figure it out for the life of me.

  • @DonutsAdvocate

    SHIFT CLICK dammit!!

  • So if I wanted 10 different ponies from 10 different backgrounds, that would be 10 extra layers. What is essentially happening is that all 11 (10 + the top layer) playing at the exactl same time, but I would have set it so the only part of every layer you see is the outlined pony?

  • Is there a reason you went through all those steps in photoshop to delete the background rather than using the quick selection tool? Given the flat colors, and the obvious difference between them, I find the quick select tool to work insanely well. Couldn't you have created an empty layer under the scene, used the quick select tool to select the background and just pressed delete (possibly using the refine edges tool)?

  • @WolfDemonProductions From using photoshop for 9 years, I've grown a personal distaste for the quick selector tool, to the point I just don't use it anymore.

But yeah, it probably would have actually worked for a cartoon background with flat colors.

  • @navybrony I'm not sure how long I've been using it. I would guess only 3 or 4. So far the only tool I completely neglect is the magic wand tool, since the quick select tool can do the same job, more accurately in only a second or so longer.

  • Thanks for the help really helpful. Well I might as well try to invite Issic Clark and his buds

  • Is there anything Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 can do that After Effects can't? Cuz I'm starting to feel the former is a waste of money

  • @DonutsAdvocate Adobe Premiere is a more streamlined program for editing movies. While After Effects has nearly the same functions, it's more meant for effect creation.

I myself use After Effects for creating effects, and then transfer my rendered scenes over to Pinnacle Studio for actual movie editing, because I find trying to edit a whole movie in only AE to be confusing and frustrating.

  • What about GIMP? It's like an open source version of Photoshop. Do you know how to do it in GIMP?

  • @DracoAzule I'm not familiar with GIMP, but I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing in it.

  • Thought it would be awesome to try this. When I saw he was photoshopping 166 photos I said Screw That

  • Sweet! Now I'm going to go get killed by Invader Zim! :D

  • And now, off to invite heavy to my house

  • At 2:51 how do you make the dots connect like that? D:

  • I haven't use photoshope sense hight school and when I looking into buying the program on google I get all kinds of different photoshope programs. Which one's are the best for something like this?

  • @hotanime32 Well, if you can afford it, the most up to date version is the best to go by, however my tutorial is rather outdated, so photoshop may not even be needed for something like this.

  • @navybrony I don't know much about AE, but I do know that you can do all this stuff in Nuke. It's definitely preferable, since you don't have to make a new mask for each frame (you work with keyframes instead).

  • @hotanime32 Thanks. I'm guessing Photoshop CS5. Is the most recent update. Your right that really expensive. Which one are you using in the video?

  • @hotanime32 photoshop 7

  • ok now with this technolagy (i cant spell)I can make anMy little dashie animated movie!!!1

  • wht program was that u were using from the beginning to 1:53 i would really like to know both questions that i'm asking now

  • wht kind of Photoshop is it????

  • If you are are lazy search "green screen pony"

  • Thank you for this tutorial. Although I fear my creative talents are not up to such a task, I was wondering though about the programmes you're using. More specifically: what would be the appropriate Apple equivalents?

  • I have to ask you, for the shadows how do you make the "walls" for the shadows to reflect off of?

  • @HierethFJ Shadows from lights don't cast onto your footage unless you select it to, however this usually makes your footage messy. A better way is to create a white solid aligned with the plane you're creating a shadow on, add a light that casts onto your character and creates a shadow, then set the white solid to multiply as its blend mode.

  • @navybrony Make sure your white solid is set to accept shadows, but not accept lights.

  • @navybrony I know the first part, but how do you create the white solids?

  • @HierethFJ Google is your friend for simple questions like that.

Right click on your composition and select, "Add Solid." Make it white.

  • I have to ask you, for the shadows how do you make the "walls" for the shadows to reflect off of?

  • Thanks this is very useful to me

  • wow... cant i just switch brains with you? that would make me understand all of this much easier

  • QUESTION! How do you do that simple line brush technique at 2:48, Please help me, i can't figure it out D':

  • @skitsmore Hold Shift

  • @navybrony Thank you! *hugs*

  • @navybrony can u plz send me the rainbow dash frames just this once just to get me started and i'll give credit to you thanks

  • where do you get your pony clips?

  • @bettaman94 The show.

  • @navybrony yeah roger... im trackin that i mean where do you download the episodes?

  • @bettaman94 Search google for JDownloader.

  • @navybrony ok preciate yah

  • hold on. is this free? if it costs money is there another way to do this?

  • will it work with PAINT.net?

  • If I wasn't a lazy bastard I would try this...some day..some day....

  • Or somebody could just find Equestria already...

  • @AlanaYeahWhatever I think the ponies wouldd think we were creepy

  • @demonjack123 That would ruin my life. D:

  • @demonjack123 Hence part of my inspiration for my new song ;)

  • @AlanaYeahWhatever Someone who is making sense finally :D

  • @zXDcigz Yeah, screw all this techy bull... bring on the ponies! :D

  • Favorited. I love After Effects and this is a good one for cartoon characters. I don't mind that it's MLP. Just find it interesting.

  • Is Sony Vegas good for this?

  • Interpolate until maximum awesome is achieved!

    xD

  • Is there a way you can do this with Sony Vegas Studio Pro 10? Or will I have to download After Effects CS5 in order to do it your way? In Sony Vegas, there isn't really an export button, so I'm thinking that I will have to get After Effects in order to do it your way. :I

  • Do you have to crop out every single image? or is there an easier way?

  • @mybuns1 Individual frames are the hardest method, but the most accurate when done right. The rotobrush is the fastest, but the lowest quality. The best way is to keyframe a mask outline, which gives very nice results in addition to not taking as long as the method shown here.

  • There are many differences between CS4 and CS5? because I could only get the cs4

  • hey does anyone know how to extend the time frame on the cropping import, and I need to make it longer... and I have tried just pulling the crop animation like how to extend the time, it will normally work in vegas but it does not in after effects Help???

  • Great job dude! Keep working! Realise Fluttershy!))

  • @Chemburlek I realise Fluttershy doesn't have a season 2 episode as well.

  • @navybrony Actually, there is a much easier way to do it. Instead, in After Effects, draw a slightly feathered mask around the whole thing. You can edit the curves of the lines on the mask, and just tween it for each frame. Hope this helps!

  • oh good

  • can this work with Adobe Premiere or no?

  • @roboguy75 I'm not entirely sure, as I'm not familiar with the program, but After Effects is a compositing program, while Premiere is an editing program. You could edit movies in both programs, but when it comes to motion tracking, 3d cast shadows, and other special effects, you need a compositing program.

  • re-watching. This will come in handy when i start making some android boot animations. fave & subbed. If you have any other tips on extracting the character from the scene please do share. Thanks!

  • navybrony your a funny badass keep doin wahtchua doin

  • dear friend, a question I do not speak good English because I'm from Argentina.

I want to know if the program you use is the Sony vegas

  • @yamarada07 Adobe After Effects CS5

  • @navybrony thank you very much friend by the name of the program

  • @MegaBronyMan I use keyframed masks now. Found it to be the best of both worlds. The rotobrush is nice but just doesn't work on cartoon characters very well.

  • I,m not a brony- okay kinda.lol

  • Is it possible to do this in Sony Vegas?

  • I dont very inderstend x)))) (I am ver bad in english sorry)

How you do photoshop to the programme

  • repeat the process 166 times.

  • good tutorial but ive already surpassed it :P thanks anyway, for more advanced shots, 3d tracking, and shadow casting / reviving solids to recreate environment, tons of masking the video and re-layering it, wont need it for ponies much once i sort out the power consumption for my new lens, it seems to capture the extra data unseeable to normal eyes of the ponies, although doesn't capture the shadows properly and often has glitches with z depth, ill fix that in post :P

  • @RichardULZ It's a fairly basic tutorial, so I wouldn't be surprised if some fellow AE users are already beyond the scope of it.

I'm planning on getting a Canon Rebel T2i. Any personal experience with it? Seems like the go to camera for tight budget short film makers. I only ask because I'm planning on shooting a short film sometime next year, and I've really been enjoying some short films that were shot on that camera.

  • @navybrony nope, but ive heard its a great camera, can capture native 1080p at 24fps, can also get 720p at 60fps, so it should be perfect to edit with, try to get a play around with one first, then get the footage and try doing some effects with it (your looking for how crisp the image is, it should look at least better then the pony video file you were using, this is for rotoscoping) also, can you color correct? if not, you need to practice and learn, that's what makes the films look great.

  • @RichardULZ I currently have a T1i, which has been great, except the 1080p's at 20fps, and there's no mic jack.

I color correct with Magic Bullet inside of Pinnacle Studio, although pony vids require some pretty crazy color correction technique to avoid corrupting their own colors.

  • This stuff is complicated... I think this tutorial will help me :D

  • I get that Rainbow's got too many colors to easily grab, so why not just color-wand the background instead...?

  • @RavenWorks I've always had mixed results with the wand, so I tend to stay away from it whenever possible.

  • You ever tried Rotoscoping the AOSTH Robotnik? that would be funny!

  • Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing it with us! --Dancougar82

  • .?

  • hey! I think a good idea for that... you can make a serie with the ponies IRL, that's not a good idea

  • Dont get me wrong, Still 20% cooler.

  • fellow graphic designer here: it would have been less time consuming and better on the borders with masks in AE since you can use beziers and have precise sharp cuts instead of that blurry edges. Also in photoshop for the masking it is waaay better to use pen tool when it is a cartoon since you can get all the details easier.

  • @gogodr yeah what this guy said

  • @gogodr Noted. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely try getting the hang of it.

  • @gogodr Thanks for the recommendation. I used keyframed masks on my recent Twilight Star Wars video, and found that method of rotoscoping to be far more effective than the rotobrush, and only takes a little bit longer.

  • @gogodr As a compositor, this is exactly what I was thinking when I watched it.

  • @gogodr maybe u should make a tutorial then. (not being a smartass i would genuinely be intrested to see how someon else would do it)

  • That kinda made me lol, you gave away the magic, On how to do it, so it's not cool anymore. : |

  • @remvampire Yeah well, I still do it the best :)

  • wow, you're good o_o

  • Why on earth did you not just use the mask tool!?

  • @TheGagunga I thought about rotoscoping that way, but I wouldn't have been able to be as precise with it, and the overall time saved by having a mask I could move and keyframe wasn't too much faster than manually cropping each frame change.

  • why didn't you just rotoscope it in AE?

  • @CherryPiFilms I tried rotoscoping at first, but the rotobrush wasn't propagating properly due to all the colors of RD's tail.

  • @navybrony while you did explain in the video why the rotobrush wouldn't work (not questioning that! i agree!), i'm more talking about the technique wherein you find the desired outline with a tool similar to the pen tool in photoshop (i need to sleep i'm talking weird as hell)

  • I see the title of the video.

    It plays.

    I pause.

I immediately add to "Watch Later" AND "Favorites".

    NUFF.

    SAID.

  • Wouldn't the pen tool be A Lot easier?

  • .., Tutorials?? Sill you these are real, aren't they?

Also You deserve a HELL OF A LOT more subscribers

  • I no have photoshop. Just MS Paint...DAMN YOOOUUUUU!

  • You've gota help me man! Im Very VERY untalented and have a patience of about 5 seconds, I realy REALY Want to have a video of me hugging dashie (to an extent)! I almost cried when i relised how hard this was! That or could you somehow find a way to make it faster/easier and get back to me, or anything! just something that will make me able to do such a thing! PLEASE O.O!!!

  • Why would someone dislike this? o.O

  • I'm using photoshop for the first time, so I'm sucking quite a bit. When you used the paintbrush tool to make an outline of RD, how do you make it so you just click two separate points to make a line, rather than drawing around all the way? I have unsteady hands, so whenever I try to make an outline, it always looks really bad.

  • @ItsMrPea Click your starting point, and while holding down shift, click your end point. Photoshop will automatically draw a line with your brush between the two.

  • @navybrony Thanks. Great work and tutorial, btw.

  • @navybrony

I tried doing the shift-click trick with the paintbrush tool, and it just drew a line through my image instead of outlining it. I am horrible with these kinds of programs, but I don't want to get one of my artistically gifted friends to do it, because I prefer to do stuff myself. Any tips?

  • @TheK12314 The shift click just generates a straight line from point A to point B. You still have to outline the character yourself, but at least with the shift method you can be more precise and give your hand a rest.

The video was cut from the beginning to the finished crop because I didn't want to waste time using the whole 5min of the process.

  • @navybrony

Ah. Well, I'm not the most precise person in the world, but that should help. Thanks!

  • Thank you for making this! I was curious how you did it when I seen your first vids. Just wish there were some open-source video editing programs that could do all this stuff, as most I got have big issues in Windows 7.

One question though, which I don't think you mentioned: How on earth did you have the patience to manually edit so many frames that way in Photoshop? I congratulate you for it... must have been a lot of work and focus. Anyway, lovely work and keep it up ^_^

  • @MirceaKitsune Patience is a must in most forms of art. Special effects workers have incredibly long rendering times (one video I saw the guy said took around 170 days to render), artists have to look at what needs to be in a scene, and short film directors usually work on all aspects of their movie. These kinds of videos are like a blend of photomanipulation and special effects work.

Lucky for me, I'm an introvert, so I spend a lot of time working on music, art, and stuff like this.

  • What program did you use tell me please I already subscribed don't make me unsub I NEED PINKIE PIE IN MY HOUSE IMMEADIATLY

  • @johnathanromero30 First, I don't particularly care about your subscription, you choose what videos you want to watch. Second, I mention the program name multiple times in the video. Third, it's in the description. Four, if you're that lazy you can't notice those, then this program will likely be very hard for you.

I don't like laziness, I don't like feelings of entitlement, and I don't like people using their subscription as a means of threat.

  • How about you make Rainbow Dash real and just give her to me. Much better than watching a video-I've always wanted to fly on a Pegasus pony.

  • Wow, if I could make Minecraft Creeper outside my house or My room

  • what program is this you use before windows moviemaker?

  • Keyframing a mask on after effects would probably be a lot easier than doing a frame by frame

  • I'm really looking for these kind of stuff. Thank you! Question: If I made an animated cartoon character and it has no background would I really have to do the process in order to make it work? I'm tryin to make it easy for me.

  • @rgGamerfreak69 You wouldn't have to do any rotoscoping work, but you would still need to motion track unless filmed on a tripod, plus add in other effects.

  • COOL! What program are you using?

  • @mihane100

I'm gonna guess either Premier Pro or most likey Adobe after effects. Not certain though.

  • i have a download where i have ponys on my desktop rainbow dash just did a sonic rainboom sweet

  • I NEED THAT SOFTWHERE i want ponies in my house >:D

  • I will use this knowledge to make porn. /watch?v=EAkSwmhp2sg&feature=related

  • To say that this tickles my fancy would be quite the understatement! I congratulate you on a job well done. *brohoof*

(Re-posted to fix an egregious typo)

  • Comment removed

  • Well windows movie maker is not so bad i mean look at my animations they were made with windows movie maker :3 there good right 3:

  • OH MY GOD. HOW DID YOU GET FINAL CUT? THAT THINGS EXPENCIVE!!

  • I want this program!!!!!

  • ...so you're a brony, a computer nerd, AND in the navy?????? .....i am willing to marry you. o-o

  • i see this, and think, you can just make Dash in Flash, animate her in there then do the rest in after effects.

  • Would be 20% cooler with (avaible) subtitles :/

  • masking is SO much easier bro.

  • 4:50 and now you gotta repeat the process about 60 times" NO

  • @willardb123 he said 166 times

  • You can do this in Sony Vegas as well VIA Masking. But, I'm trying to learn the Adobe software so this helped a lot. And so cute! :D Thanks a bunch!!

  • I gonna do whole movie called MLP : Humanilacion (im not sure did i spelled it right)

  • Even though I think the show is completely crap. this is awesome! :D

  • Can you give the source files so I can follow please?

  • @benblue3 Sorry, I no longer have the source files, but that's a good idea I'll keep for future tutorials.

  • Question Navy you skimmed pretty fast past the shading process how did you shade the ponies?

  • Wow, all that work for a 12 second video o_o

  • Thumbs up if u saw the thing in the couch it gives you coins when u drop one

  • you sir get a subscribe :)

  • YES. FLUTTERSHY...

    YOU WILL BE MINEEEE!!!!!

  • wait what program are u are using?

  • Isn't it simpler to just use the selection tool for Dash herself?

  • Repeat the process.... 166 times?!?!

  • Other way's for getting ponies in your real life: Watch all episodes without intermissions. Use drugs.

  • @MrDutchcrafter I see your logic. The best part is that when you used them enough, they stay, because you're dead.

  • @MrDutchcrafter Fund it?

  • Another question

Will i can do it on Adobe after effect CS4, becuse i have only 32 bit system?

  • @namoqa You can pretty much do everything except use the rotobrush, as it's a 64bit plugin. You can still rotoscope the old fashioned way, but it might be a bit trickier.

  • Which version of adobe after effect is he using?

  • @namoqa CS5

  • @navybrony Thanks.

  • I would have just re-animated the damn thing in Flash itself...

  • Lemme gues... Adobe After Effects costs like, 500 fucking dollars right?

  • @RoBlobEpicness It ranges from about $180 - $400, but either way it's pretty damn expensive

  • @RoBlobEpicness If you have a 64 bit system, you can 'borrow' it from pirate bay for free.
