There's an interesting article on Chris Marker's still photography over the last fifty years in the latest edition of UK film magazine Vertigo. Vertigo regularly features Marker and similar filmmakers. The Vertigo website has details and free articles.
While I'm at it, Chris Marker's 'The Case of the Grinning Cat' (2005) or 'Chats Perchés' is worth looking for. It deals with post-9/11 issues. A film-maker like no other.
This is a conceptually innovative classic. Personally I find Marker's 'Sans Soleil' much more engaging, with many more dimensions. But that doesn't really take anything away from this interesting approach of film making.
One of the greatest films of all time. I first saw the dubbed version on TV (IFC or Sundance, I think) and knew I had to own it. So, I bought the original version (in French with English subtitles). When I watched it, I realized that I missed the narrator. It was somthing about his voice that really got to me. Where can I get the dubbed version on DVD?
Unfortunately, it's not possible to get a decent version of this film in the U.S. There's a very poor VHS transfer from the early '90s (dubbed into English) that you can still find, and it's available on a shorts compilation called "Dreams" I haven't seen the DVD so can't comment on picture quality, but it's also dubbed. I saw it in college from a subtitled film print, and it's my preferred version. If you search for "Chris Marker" on Amazon you should find both the VHS & DVD.
There is some info on my site: http://www.panopticist.com/
archives/191.html. The entire original French version is on Google Video (or it was a couple of months ago) and the full subtitled version is probably around somewhere too...
It reminds me of tthe movie 12 monkeys...
