I seem to remember Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and George W Bush going on and on about how their wars were all going really well. People in positions like this lie. Period. If you tell the truth and say it isn't going well, you get fired. Plain and simple.
250,000 blackwater and other private military contractors, all running around in their personal armor with their personal AK47's.
How can Obama just pull the plug on these wars and allow that mess to ooze out on the rest of the world? Those mercenaries are going to become bricklayers and high school teachers overnight?
If Obama is taking too long to end the wars, it's because he has a sieve with which to bail out the sinking ship.
Osama succeeded in provoking the US to attack and occupy Muslim countries, he specifically noted that long term occupations will be too costly in lives and money to continue indefinitely.
Instead of attempting a risky and difficult attack on the West, why not just attack the US forces in your neighborhood? Its so much safer to plant an IED and blow up a Humvee from afar...
The US has walked right into the trap of Al-Qaeda, has acted so disproportionately and it has been so counterproductive!!!
Rather optimistic of him, when the realist in me is more inclined to think it's just winter, and when spring comes, the offense & defense on both parts will pick up again. And besides that, the last month or two hasn't exactly been the most winning of months for us unless you're considering that casualties have been reaching new peaks.
Success in 7 months after 8 years? Wow, that's fast. The Russians had no success in over 10 years. This is truly a miracle. What a military genius he must be! Then again, he might be lying... wink wink.
And the Taliban is not getting support from the ISI?
The Taliban were US-backed Jihadist guerrillas once called "freedom fighters" by Reagan. Now we call them terrorists who are soooo evil. (Funny how freedoms fighters become terrorists in 20 years)
There are many loosely affiliated group known as "Talban" or "Students". My point was that the Madrassas on the Af/Pac border were set up with US funding funneled through Pakistan. For instance Chinese small arms were imported to be not traced to the US.
Its hard to speak of the "Taliban", when there are dozens of splinter, tribal and regional groups with overlapping but not identical goals.
This current struggle has nothing to do with military genius. It isn't maneuvering, flanking or any other skills of the conventional commander, rather it is Unconventional Warfare that wins the struggle.
7 months of success after 8 years of idiotic strategy. 8 years of fighting insurgents like they were a conventional force.
Americans play to win at all times. I wouldn't give a hoot and hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost nor ever lose a war.
George S. Patton
WW 2 proves that point any real WAR waged on REAL MONEY USA wins every time.
Any fake war waged with fiat money the USA loses.
Example Vietnam, now Iraq and Afghanistan both lost and the unfunded wars continue. US government shows they are incompetent in leading the US people.
mcchrystal is just as dumb as most military leaders.. who cares about the casualties as long they spin their story.. how soon they forgot the lessons of vietnam.. the lessons of afghanistan however will be more costly and embarrassing
Its worse than forgetting about Vietnam, they learned the WRONG lesson: If only we stayed longer, using a little more firepower we would have won.
Afghanistan will devastate America's military, further ruin US reputation abroad, increase violent extremism and cost hundreds of billions of dollars that simply are not there.
Funny how much people complain that health care reform costs too much, yet both parties line up to spend trillions on endless wars of overseas occupation...
Afghanistan is the graveyard of Empires.

Rumsfeld, Cheney and Bush oversaw the invasion of AFG which was one of the best invasions in military history.
Then, their focus was turned to the fuck up, otherwise known as the war in Iraq.
McChrystal has been the only commander with a real head on his shoulders.

when will we know if this is really true? what evidence do you have that this is true?

you also have to take into account that America was supplying the Afghans with guns and other forms of Aid when Russia was fighting them.

And you think the Saudi's, Iran and others aren't hedging their bets by supplying the Taliban? Hmmmm.

not to the same degree.

We don't have as many troops there as the Ruskies did, its all relative.

Success after ISAF, Afghan police and civilian casualties have been getting higher?
Success after the resurgence and expansion of the Taliban?
Success after the fraudulent election that exposed the corrupt Karzai regime?
How is anything in Afghanistan looking remotely optimistic?!?
micahgee 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
Civilian casualties have spiked. Civilian casualties as caused by coalition forces have dropped.
Why?
An emboldened enemy, going on the offensive.
"Success after the fraudulent election that exposed the corrupt Karzai regime?"
^ That is what truly worries me.

That is exactly where you are wrong.
McChrystal is not "most military leaders". McChrystal has adopted an unconventional method to combat the insurgency.
The dudes before McChrystal were a bunch of conventional commanders who wanted to fight this thing like we were fighting the Iraqi army.
Tanks and planes won't win hearts and minds. McChrystal realizes that.

McChrystal is a moron.
Everybody knows we turned the corner in Afghanistan back in 2002. George Bush and Dick Cheney both said so at the time.
