@Niffiwan The ending. Is it saying that the real monster was the woman, and the furry creature is like the alter ego of the maid?

@earthdragon124 No... The monster is real - in a way. But only as long as others appreciate it, because it has nothing else. There are people who are such "monsters". What you call the "maid" is not a maid, but the other resident. This story takes place in a communal apartment; these were common in the USSR - and when people are forced close together, you get such conflicts. It's actually a bit difficult for me to analyze this film, because I understand it more on an intuitive, emotional level.

@earthdragon124 Turning into the rat = her true nature being exposed. Also, did you notice the many mailboxes outside of the apartment, at the beginning of the film? That's a "sign" saying that this is a communal apartment.

People like that aren't beautiful to start with, I think. Not at that age. (Not without Photoshop, anyway)

So the animation wasn't all that great... But the backgrounds were beautiful and the story is heartbreaking in a way.
