I live in the desert in Albuquerque,NM and these coolers are cheaper to run than refrigerated air but they are very inefficient in my experience. Plus they have to be serviced at least once a year and take a great deal of water. If you are living on an already overstressed aquifer like I am it really is a bad idea to use more water than you would need to drink in a day. When you have about 200,000 of these things running in an urban sprawl it can be extremely damaging.
Very nice work! I'm in the process og building one on a much larger scale (for 750sqft) using a large wheeled trash can and a 12 volt DC radiator fan that pulls 1250 CFM. Great job! Did you get the squirrel cage fan set on eBay?
This concept is very popular in India as there is hardly any air-conditioner. Try a smaller portable unit using PC fan ran by solar, shd be ideal for camping.
Since the cooling is done via evaporation, couldn't you put that unit anywhere in your room and have the same effect? Or is the outside air important?
@ASFx2600 nope if you had it in your room it would cause it to recycle the air causing it to get more and more humid to the point where its unbearible :) out side air is very dry
any idea on how to make a portable one, like for a car? I think this would be perfect for when I'm working at a job in the summer and would like some cool air. just turn on my evaporator! >I think 1'x1' would be a good size.
This is green energy because it saves so much electricity, it makes it practical to put one anyplace to bring the air down a few degrees, even if it's solar powered electricity. Maby an "energy star" rating or whatever they call it.

cool!, their really simple compared to refrigerated coolers, only difference is the humidity and higher output temp.
jsut gotta keep them clean and dis-infected. they earnt the nickname germ factories over here because people never cleaned or drained them :(

animebsd 1 year ago
@animebsd I will but with what money? I only have very few parts lying around my house right now. the rest I would have to buy.

that's pretty cool! and you can use it as a humidifier in the winter. it probably wouldn't work too well here because it gets hot and humid
