suckers do not "sap" energy ...lol ... leaves and stems are the growth engine of the plant... ,cutting off leaves and stems, in no way increases the plants energy.
suckering is beneficial if you have a relatively short growing season,, or if you are training the plants up a string. If you want huge tomatoes the best way is to remove all but one tomato from each truss.

lol what a load of crap ,with good sunlight and great soil there is no diffrence , yeild is all in the conditions and the soil, my friends all prune theres and there yeild doesnt compare to mine and i do nothing , but maybe its the good sunlight we have here in australia, to me pruning seems to stress the plant.

she is removing the "suckers" , these suckers will grow more tomatoes but she wants to have less quantity of tomatoes and force the plant to concentrate more on larger growing and possibly earlier harvest.
you don't have to do this, it's more of an option, I rarely remove suckers and have still plenty of very large and abundant harvest, it depends on how you prefer to grow them
Hi, I'm new to growing tomatoes and although saw what you did and how you did it I'm curious as to why you chose to do it at that part of the plant, is it because that was one of the lower branches and as such the upper branches would shade that part of the plant? Are you allowing the upper part of the plant that gains good sunlight the best chance of producing decent fruit? Many thanks
