@myfunkychannel yeah youre right though i think the actual service vehicle has semi sloped sides . they changed it. not reaaaallly sure though gotta check that out
Wheels have their advantages. Maybe some of them are destroyed, but the vehicle can still move, even if it has only 4 wheels left. Try that with tracks. Maintainance is easier too, and off road performance of wheels gets better and better. The French and the Russians use wheeled IFVs.
But anyway. What really interests me: Could someone PLEASE put on some more recent footage of the Boxer? The beast is about to be introduced in the German and Dutch armies, and still you don't get any new vids.
wheels that are big enough can work fine... this vehicle looks like it might be able to loose a wheel and keep on going... on the other hand, the LAV-25 / III or the Stryker has really small wheels for it's size.
I still believe tracks are the only way for combat armor to go... i didnt see too many true off road tests of this, all on trails.
Wheeled :( Tracks are a lot safer in case of an IED, machinegun fire, or basically anything. Wheels do provide better handing on roads, but how many roads does the Afghani desert have?
I think you're not so right...these wheels are armored too or something i have reaad, and even if they loose like 3/4 wheels he can drive further, a tracked vehicle can if the tracks are broken...wheels are much faster than tracks, and this vehicle is so high-tech that it will be the modernest APC is...
But there is also a reason why they have wheels; its fast like i said early, and it can be higher with a false bottom, agains IED's (and ofcourse the special armor)
but we in the Netherlands get the Boxer in 2011 as replacement for the YPR (its a IFV)
and we get the CV9035NL also as replacement for the YPR, we also have the CV9035NL, but the Boxer is still in testingphase and stuff i gues...
They are used on lighter vehicles, who need to be faster. Because they are lighter, they use sloped bottoms instead of very heavy depleted uranium armor like the m1 Abrams MBT. It depends on mission profile what kind of propulsion they use, i figure..
well, i don't think we are attacking Hawaii or something, only countrys like iraq and that muslim country (sorry don;t know another name) with the extreme terrorist with IED's i think we better can use a vehicle like this, wheels fast movement good armor and sloped bottoms ;)
Only apcs can have wheels, Ifv's need traccks for sure. The boxer has STANAG 3b + 2a IED protection if i'm correct, not sure. Tracked vehicles often have STANAG 3a though, so they are in fact tougher ;)
i just ordered my boxer, kinda bored of hummer

the sides are flat as shit, not really projectile deflective friendly. It should be at least semi sloped.

A basic AK-47 round won't penetrate right away, but russian 14.something caliber AT rounds and RPG's make short work of reinforced rubber ;)
Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan always prefer tracks over wheels, if possible, for a reason.

I'm not saying wheels are completely useless ;)
